“Scarborough Fair” is an English folk song from the Middle Ages. We arranged this song years ago for harp duet, but we wanted to re-arrange it for harp duet as well as include all the lyrics. We don’t think we ever knew the true story behind the song because every artist we have every heard seems to sing only a couple of verses, which obscures the original meaning of the song. So, we included ALL of the original verses, and then decided to switch back and forth between the “male” and “female” perspectives. If you listen to the lyrics, the lovers are each giving the other a long, long, series of impossible tasks to “prove” their love… A little passive aggressive! Lol, x2 Some of the terms and references are antiquated, but we think that even listeners today can understand the story. Because we included all of the lyrics, our arrangement is quite long. However, you will hear - perhaps for the first time - the entire story of the lovers in “Scarborough Fair”! Plus, we had the opportunity to film at a real castle - the only castle in the world built by only one man: The Bettendorf Castle! We hope that our interpretation will grip your imagination and sweep you away to a mysterious fair in the Middle Ages.

During the late Middle Ages the seaside town of Scarborough, in Yorkshire, was an important venue for tradesmen from all over England. It was host to a huge 45-day trading event starting on 15 August, which was exceptionally long for a fair in those times. Merchants came to it from all areas of England, Norway, Denmark, the Baltic states, and the Byzantine Empire. Scarborough Fair originated from a royal charter granted by King Henry III of England on 22 January 1253.

I think this is some of the loveliest harp playing I've heard from the five or so years I've been subscribed. Scarborough Faire is one of my favorite folk songs, and I first heard it from Celtic Woman's Greatest Journey tour, and again from A New Journey, with Haley Westenra. Thank you for bringing back memories of my high school years, when I was less troubled by chronic anxiety and was able to throw myself into pursuing music as a passion. I even did a semester of harp lessons to try the instrument out, but just like the piano, it was a bit much to keep track of two different clefs when playing up to eight separate notes. Flute was always my pride and joy anyway.

Back to the Middle Ages, thanks to this arrangement and the harps. No, those times were not so obscure, as often told by those who'll tell you there was nothing before the Renaissance... those times produced gems like this one.
