- Frostpunk 2's preview beta just went live, so I dive in and explore various aspects of the game.
In short: It's a different experience from the previous game, but an enjoyable one. I'm excited for more to come with its full release.

Finally. The children have been idle and they yearn for the mines.
Let’s MARCH to work!
Get back to work!
AAHAHAHAHA
Huzzah!
So idle they're stabbing each other
I saw the thumbnail and immediately thought: "Fool me once..."
He got me with the April Fools video too. And yet I still clicked on this without hesitation.
You may now be known as a simple steward, but you will always be the Captain in my heart
Oh I'll be getting my Captain title back.
@DDRJake you saw the 4th section of law too, my friend?

43:50 "Collects fingers she finds while repairing machinery."
Bloody hell, Madeline...
Reminds me of the time I went to a sports competition, and some poor girl had part of her finger cut off from getting shut in a van door. Someone actually went and found the finger bit, just laying in the gravel. Eugh.
@@eolond1003 Out of curiosity, do you know if she had surgery to attach it back or can you even do that?
@@12354rony I'll answer your question. Yes you can stitch it back on, but I think the finger has to still be healthy.
@@someguy4071 I mean, if it was completely cut off would the bone have any chance to fuse back together? Also I imagine the nerves would be perma damaged and you wouldn't be able to move of feel with that finger again.
@@12354ronypeople do get fingers re-attached and functional but I believe it has to be done pretty quickly after the accident so the limb doesn't die. Surgeons can reattach nerves nowadays, but physical therapy is necessary to regain function (I'm just interested in bionics, I promise I'm not a murderer)
Definitely do that write up and send it over to the guys there in Poland. Feedback like that is what they're looking for. I think your analysis has been great, really good technical points on things they can improve like live updating tooltip timers and cooldowns. They need to hear that directly, don't assume they'll just watch every playthrough and take notes.
Agreed. Playtests and betas live and die with the (lack of) feedback they receive. And Jake is a very technical person, given his extensive systems mastery of Frostpunk prior.
@@Dinictus Yeah the man's challenge runs on FP1 are things of legend so he's plenty qualified. The beta actually has a survey link to Google forms so they're encouraging feedback, I gave them my thoughts
I love the idea of the starting city in this game being a finished and built up city from the first game. Ups the sense of scale a lot, especially with the generator being tiny looking.
They could implement option to transfer city from one game to the other like crusader kings to Europa universalis transfer.
@@worekmiesa1255ohh they have to be, if not i'm gonna riot
@@gregrenox9644 Discontent rises greatly
I really wished the generator was bigger and way more pronounced. Like how they turned into THICK BOYS before 🤣
It's 30 years since the end of Frostpunk 1. That's why you start with a couple thousand people isntead of a couple hundred.
can't wait for the 9 hour long challenge videos to come out
Aye. Do these people really need a generator?
@@DDRJakethe icebloods certainly don't, not like those weak technocrats... on that note, we should give them another visit with our batons in hand.
Quite ambitious to completely revamp the game mechanics. It's a new adventure in the same world, which truly makes it a "part two" instead of just an extended DLC or refresher of the original game.
For my taste, it feels too much like an excel sheet simulator right now, lacking the "feet on frozen ground" tangible feeling of the first game.
Can't wait for DDRJake to put the kids to work when the game properly releases!
Like Streets of Rogue 2 and boy I sure hope that game is good.
I like what they did (of what I have seen so far). Bold move and it does not make the first game obsolete. The only thing I dislike is that the first game is not "endless" (i.e. no user generated content like challenges, new maps and so on).
@@banzooiebooieyeah it's really a shame that the Frostpunk 1 engine is impossible/unreasonably difficult to mod.
Hahahahahaha. Love this from chat: "Squalor is the sign of a successful society."
The automatons can be seen when building the roads to your new district. They walk along the roads. Also they fume with black smoke in the harsh winds.
Right you are, I completely missed them. At this scale they look so tiny compared to the giants of FP1.
I couldn't read that without shouting "FOR DEMOCRACY" incessantly within my brain. I'm broken
@@DDRJake that goes with your comment early on in the stream about this being a layer up from FP1. We are a little further away from everything.
What we need is to build bigger better automatons.
Excellent, looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish with this preview!
I'm looking forward to you doing those crazy challenges again
I was starting to miss the long hours of GET BACK TO WORK

Yeah the UI deisgn definetly has this thematic retro feeling, but it comes at the cost of functionalit by being at the bare edges of the screen.
Front punk 1 UI was more concentrated better for viewing and white text in a dark background made it pop out more.
Frost punk 2 UI is kinda hard to see with stuff blending into the white, like the research page could Definitely could add more dark contrast so things would "pop out" more.
Doesn't really feel "thematic" to me. Thematic would be something early-20th century style; this is just ... white and small with low contrasts in too many places and stuff put into odd places.
@@_SpamMe to me it feels thematic because in the UI i feel hints of first century type-writer style/news paper format - something like that.
The original FP's concept was awesome, and all I wanted was _more._ Really, just _more._ More buildings, more people, more resources, more steamcores, more laws, more events, more tech, more upgrades. They could have gone full chaos theory, total cognitive overload. _Anything_ could happen.
You construct buildings, their users start adapting them to their individual needs, so you're fighting your own people subverting your city planning. While you're busy developing centralized plumbing, two gangs of street kids have a deadly rumble over who gets to squat in an abandoned hothouse, which is dissolved by the intervention of a secret coal hoarding mafia. And if you back-trace how this happened, it's all because 178 days ago you refused Freddy an additional ration, he fell asleep at the job and pipe pressure caused an explosion vaporizing the infirmary treating the kids' parents.
I don't know how to feel about this beta...
I did not like the beta. It was nothing like fp1. Also performance is poor
First, the scenario above is bat shit crazy and I love it.
Second, it's just a beta, performance will get better. I believe they're trying to stay safe with this one and reign it in a little. I'm sure for the 3rd one(If there is)/DLCs they'll be more willing to step out of the city-builder comfort zone. Cold is definitely an issue I want to press more on.
Part of the reason we never had a large deluge of extra content in Frostpunk was the developer was so overwhelmingly resistant to the idea of the game ever being modded. So you were limited to the developer's limiting idea of what the game should be like. The dev had a vision for the game and wanted it to be just that, what they envisioned.
Good for them that they got what they wanted, but it did mean that Frostpunk became a game with significantly lower replay value because of that limitation.
Compare with, say, Rimworld, a game that actively encourages the modmakers to go crazy, and how eventually there'll be a time you'll just have completed everything in Frostpunk and have nothing more to do and nothing to expand, while in Rimworld... well, that's when you start adding more mods.
@@bananaslamma35 Take a look at the multiple steam news posts by 11bit, when they modified FP to promote FP 2 in-game; many comments are negative, like, _viscerally_ negative, because 11bit would update several GB of content just to add some stupid button in the main menu. And here they are again, storing the whole game in a few giant, cryptic packages, as if they meant to scream: "Don't touch this, ever!" Honestly, I've liked FP so much, I couldn't bring myself to say it, but I think I'm bloody done with this studio.
Heck yes, saw this and immediately thought of jake, time to send the children back to the mines and Hargreaves back to the pleasure house!
I got to say I'm currently not sold on the new direction the game is taking. It's a drastic change from the first.
Gameplay wise that is.
Same here, if i wanted to play a macro-oriented game with a hex grid, I'd just play Civilization
I wanted Frostpunk, not Winter Cities:Skylines
I have a feeling it's just going to get bigger and bigger, to the point of the cold being a minor annoyance and people being the major problem.
From city to cities to nations to states to conquering other civilizations in the name of "progress." The cold has to persist, lest it just be Cities: Skylines or one of the Crusaders titles. Really hoping it doesn't come to that.
@@beginthewar9681 again that sounds like Civilization. Frostpunk was unique because your decisions were extremely impactful, and the game made sure you were to see it. From the individual dialogs to how your decisions in the book of law impacted your city, and of course the whole exploration mechanics which gave you access to more manpower and steamcores.
What I'm trying to say is that Frostpunk made it feel personal, you get to decide how you will make this city survive the end of the world, whether you are benevolent and use positive laws, or you go Jake mode sending fifthly kids to the mines while embracing cannibalism.
This game just feels bland compare to the first entry, like playing Civilization where you click 1 hex and get this bonus + another problem, you can't even zoom in to see what's happening
Yes this is beta testing but if the game made it to beta, that means it won't change back to its roots
@@DLockholm Good points; The entire game feels impersonal and there's not a lot of pressure to do things. I haven't made it an hour in, so maybe I'll be proven wrong, but it seems like the promise system has been done away with. It couldn't have been hard to make larger and larger promises with greater frames of time to get it done, and there's no overarching timer; There's no more dread in the beginning, which is disappointing.
You're right, I just hope that 8-bit adds a different mode in a DLC or something similar that slows time down and adds promises back in, though I doubt that'll happen in the few months between beta and full release.
@@lukek.2866 First, I know it's a beta. Not everything in it is ready, I've made sure to remind myself that for a while with many games of which I wanted to judge without knowing what the final product would look like, but we can make certain assumptions about what the final game will look like based on the beta. If these mechanics and this general made it through, the likelihood of this changing in any other mode is low, however DLCs have that chance to have things changed, as well as updates to the game. It's an ongoing project.
Second, I'm glad they released a beta. I'm glad we got to see gameplay of this version. I have played many betas/demos, of which were mostly done but had some improvements. This is that. Of course it's not going to be done. Other scenarios will come out, other DLCs, different difficulties, modes, etc., but if this is the Freeplay, it tells us what gameplay will look like.
I'm using Frostpunk as an example: The early-game of Frostpunk was very stressful before it leveled out in the main game. You reached a point of stability from which there was none, so you knew what you were getting into when you went into Freeplay. In Frostpunk 2, you start with many new things, which I'm sure the main campaign will explain in detail, and everything feels like it's at much less risk than before. There's no dread here, no urgency. Again, I'm sure that will change with time along with other campaigns, modes, and difficulties.
I'm not saying I think it won't change, I'm saying that this is what a general game of Frostpunk 2 will look and feel like. You're not even wrong in that this isn't a final product, which is subject to change, I just feel disrespected and my opinion devalued because you doubted my intelligence/knowledge in knowing that this is a beta. Do not treat me like I am stupid.
@ddrjake dude, finally, i been waiting for you to do this, im all in on this, cant wait for your content on frostpunk 2
I can't wait for you to be doing these series 😀
Oh nice!! I gonna enjoy this! I been patiently been waiting for some more frostpunk 2 information.
I have watched your FP1 challenges for so many years. This will be grand.
I have been waiting for this video for soooo long. Thank you Jake❤❤
The hour has come. I have greatly enjoyed watching this and will be waiting for more to come
I love you dude, happy to see you play this game. Learned to play frostpunk because of you. Hope I can learn some more with your playthroughs!
As a lover of your frostpunk series lately, I was pleased to see this uploaded so soon! Get back to work!
I think the UI is pretty standard barebones, which is drop from Frostpunk 1. This beta doesn't have an artist's love.
Glad to see you back in the game your channel introduced me to and I have spent hundreds of hours in. BTW, there is a "Survey" Link on the Main Menu, I filled out mine already. Only one section allows you to articulate what you want to see changed. I mentioned the UI and the amount of obfuscation. Seem to be a lot of systems, but I didn't realize you need more coal to generate more heat. So I was freezing to death most of the game, especially since the Generator Tree is locked.
I’ve been awaiting this video.
It’s currently past midnight. But I will watch nonetheless.
I was waiting and hoping you will pick up this game. Looking forward to this so mutch! Love your style and commentary
Watched some horrible Frost punk 2 vids before Jake released. Like seeing two different games.
Oh captain my captain, can’t wait for your playthroughs
I have been waiting for your video to come out about this game before actually looking into buying it
For me what contributed the most bringing me up to the scale of FP2 is the balloons in the logistics districts. The entire FP1 build area may have been very big, but dang the beacon balloon rises to even more towering heights. I bet it subtly going down and up with every storm made it more memorable to recall.
Now, look at logistics districts in FP2, and you see the itty bitty tiny balloons.
I have to say I'm an hour in to watching this and I never thought I would say this but its not grabbing me. Its lost the unique Frost Punk charm for me, it just does not feel like the first one did, its changed too much in another direction and not one that pleases me.
I waited to watch this too see your take on it, till after I had completed a couple of playthroughs myself. And for the most I agree with you wholeheartedly. They NEED to make it clearer when "Expeditions" end, and when anything else completes i.e; research either with an ingame sound or an announcement middlesish of screen, many times on my first 2 playthroughs I wondered to myself how long the research had been completed, or a new law was ready to enact
I find it interesting that the guy who started out being entirely for the mechanicus turned into an Iceblood supporter mid-playthrough.
A fickle mind is a healthy mind.
it was a nice city builder, look what they have done to my boy
Nah I'm still excited for Frostpunk 2, the UI looks awful but if the game has the same tone and political themes of the first then I'll love it. I especially like the wider scale of the city.
Hey we back to more frostpunk
been waiting for this since 2020
We are so fucking back!
I was waiting for your play through the moment I saw the beta was out
Yea! I just seen the ad for Frostpunk 2 today and first thing I thought was to come and check out DDRJake. Can't wait to watch you play!
DDRJake, What is kinda fun, I think, is that with FrostPunk 2 being almost a different style game, if Frostpunk 2 does well the developers could add in DLC to Frostpunk 1 that ties into Frontpunk 2. Like prequels to the frostpunk 2 dlc.
Its amazing how much the game has improved since the last preview video
My favorite frostpunk CZcamsr
Hey, Jake, omg, I hope its good enough for you (and us) to enjoy 🎉
This seems like it would fit in the mobile genre, I remember sims had the pop up machines to build and people are moving super fast in normal speed. The play stlye can not be compared to the original. Way less animation and theatrical movements.
I want a dark mode from this game. the white sure burns my eyes sometimes
A lesson I learned is that I do appreciate the *LOUD CRUNCH* when things are done and ready
okay, I am back with my tea and some break time to FINALLY watch the preview :D
The moment I heard that there would be an open beta, i hoped DDRJake would play it, and despite the doubters he would play a pre-order beta, you didn't disappoint! THE CITY MUST NOT FALL
Yay!!!! So glad to see there’s a demo now!!
This looks beautiful. Much more expansive and intricate than Frostpunk 1. Hopefully we get the same punch within the music and the story! Thank you 11-Bit. Thank you Jake.
I cannot wait for this to release.
I love watching your Frost Punk and State of Decay 2 playlists due to your infectious enthusiasm for the games... what other games on your channel would you call your favorites? (*Secretly whispers to self please don't say Nancy Drew please don't say Nancy Drew please don't say Nancy Drew...*)
I can't deny how much I love the acute, nuanced pain of playing a Nancy Drew game, but my favourite channel staples are RimWorld, Caesar III and The Long Dark. Another series that I have truly adored recently is Motorsport Manager because of how much fun it was to drag viewers into the game for our amusement.
I've been waiting the whole day for this!!!
NOBODY CHALLENGE THE STEWARD!!!!
I was waiting for THE Frost punk guy on CZcams to do this. Thanks
frost punk feels more like someone that knew how to do a table game and frostpunk 2 looks more like a spread sheet guy working on the ui
I suppose the reason for heatstamp economy is because in the first game people were doing stuff because otherwise they died, it was a survival situation but now it's like the end game of your challange videos (when it ends well) so they don't need to go out and risk their lives, so now just like modern times, you need to compensate people for their hard work.
Or rather, as the size and complexity of an economy grows, some kind of currency just becomes a neccessity to keep things running smoothly. And early on, that currency will tend to be backed by something, be it gold or silver or some kind of common neccessity like a staple food (IIRC in medieval Japan the official currency was backed by the feudal lords' rice income for example) or, in this case, heat.
@@magni5648 yeah that makes sense too!
Can't wait for the full game to come out and watch 2 weeks worth of Jake's streams. Those Iceborn look cool and all but Steel> flesh any day of the week. Hope all other factions are interesting and have their own unique flavor.
Loyal Tech Priests, bringing glory to the Omnissiah, will always be preferable to those hippy dippy Frost Elves.
Also I think it would be cool if they made an update with those positive and negative synergies to Frostpunk 1, as a play mode later on. Not likely, but I could see you throwing yourself back into that game, I mean you went back for the sake of a single building and tech.
Let's goooo we are so backkk!
Nice run Jake as usual although I'm late to the party :) I have put so many hours into Frostpunk one and I can't wait for this one to be fully released and watch your series!
If you had mod support for Frostpunk one, what would you change/add?
So instead of expanding on the mechanics of the first game they made a generic, winter themed city builder. I can't help but be disappointed.
Agree on the UI , both the look and functionality . Good to see Frostpunk back but its changed so much i will wait and see if its good.
Let's goooooooooooooooooooo, lovely mate.
Ohhh good golly, here we go.
Hi Jake. The automatons are definitely present in the city at the start. Sometimes you could see them walking around on the roads.
I am so excited to see you back in the putting the children to work business.
I think it would make sense with the Heat Stamps to expand upon it.
Say make a ‘heat storage’ insulated area. And the more excess you have, the more you lose from radiating heat. - this explaining why you as the city would have a limited amount.
I think I need to free a couple of weekends up to catch one of your streams.
We are so back!
I am somewhat disappointed that this is only the replay of the second Frostpunk 2 stream. I would have liked to enjoy the thrills of the first one again.
The video that I was wayting for.
I hope they add those crunchy and satisfying noises, sounds and ambiance when you click, observe, listen or get notification.
return of the king
Can't wait!
The world is back as it should be. Cold, dark, and full of misery.
What do you think about the soundtrack in this game? The music in Frostpunk 1 was amazing so that will be a significant thing I'll look at for this game
So far it feels like a step down and it has pacing and level issues, but I need to really sit down with it to judge them against each other.
I've been waiting years got this
36:30 in Poland we use the standard us layout (qwerty) most commonly. There are some who use the uk layout, but that’s it. The other layouts are very rare
Yeah, if you use a layout different than Polish Programmer's (international keys + diacritics under key combinations) you get strange looks. Deservedly so.
having played a few hours Beta myself, entirely agree with the UI challenges.
Hey Jake, idk about you, but the moment I saw The Captains Authority, I was looking forward to both the power of it back and the consequences of that power returning to the city. Whats your thoughts?
Weeeeeee time to have fun. I commute 5 hours a day and I really appreciate you for making it fun.
Five hours!? I sure hope you love that job but please respect your time and yourself.
@@DDRJake it pays well and i don't waste all of the time. i study , watch ur videos ,etc and most of all its an easy job.
As soon as I saw DDRJake uploaded I instantly clicked. I've seen your FP1 gameplay series and enjoyed it a lot. Would love to hear your take on this one. Personally, I have mixed feelings.
I agree that everything cosnidering ''cooldown done, research done ect'' needs at lest a recognisable sound.
Do the right up on the UI stuff. I 100% agree with you.
I personally think that once the story mode releases, the story will take place in New London, especially considering it would draw a line through both games story-wise. The city the Demo takes place in might then be similar to the custom cities of FP1: Endless
The Train problem in cold climates are solved with heating elements in the rail switches (so they dont freez) and plows the keep the rails "free" of snow
My YTFeed is overrun by creators with FP2 Content. But i waited patiently for you to Release. Thanks!
1:08:35 "sure I promised, but I didn't promise to keep my promise"
Played the first game and loved. This one looks promising, May I know if there is an option to darken the text UI background? It's way too bright especially with already the brightness from snow, and is there a way to provide them(11bitz), feedback about it to change or option?
The more I watch the more this seems like a step back from an immersion point of view...
I really like how the start date is during ww1 in our timeline
2:23:05 you’ve just described Russians. Which is why Sweden joined NATO.
I really don't like the white bars on the top and bottom of the UI. Takes me out of the immersion of the landscape a little bit. At the very least I hope there is an option to make those more transparent. Frostpunk 1 did a great job with the UI. This one isn't as good for me. Everything is too small and in inconvenient spots.
the little forager and machine groups reminds me of the on the edge dlc
to be the captain once more, surely
Big fan of the number lots of challenges done, but im not planning on doing deluxe edition seems dumb to me, might buy the regular game yet, still watching a few play throughs not sold on this yet idk
