- In recognition of National Herpes Awareness Day, Fred Hutch virologist Dr. Keith Jerome shares a special message about the research he and others are conducting to find a cure for herpes simplex virus infections.
Jerome and his lab have drawn worldwide attention for their work using gene therapy to target HSV, which is responsible for cold sores and genital herpes. The team has engineered a herpes gene-cutting enzyme that homes in on nerve clusters where the virus hides.

If people are "suffering," why herpes not included in the test that everyone gets?......Because most people will test positive, and the psychological damage is worse than the virus itself. And, if you get outbreaks, why take medication for something the only last 7 to 10 days and might never come back again.
As someone who’s recently been diagnosed with HSV, it’s been really deteriorating mentally. Getting it from a partner who you trusted is what angers me even more & almost feel guilty about it. But, having hope that there might be a cure in the making soon makes me so happy and grateful that one day I’ll be able to healed!
I have both also. I hope the cure won't be as expensive as the Hep C cure.
Hi I want to tell you it does get better I have hsv1 genitally I was diagnosed after my first time losing my virginity and have had it since 15, I’m now 28 and What I can tell you is the shame and the mental health problems it causes will get immensely better. I’m asymptomatic and haven’t had symptoms in years since I was probably 18.
You body builds strength against it and symptoms will eventually be slim to none. I used to only get it when stressed but now not even then do I get it. I now has a beautiful 7 month old son who does not have it, and am very happy with my life. It has not affected my dating life and the “talk” gets easier. What I want to tell you is it definitely gets easier to deal with, and you will gain your confidence back and honestly most people don’t even care when you tell them. I promise it will get better.
I’ve had it for my entire adult life I remember when I first was told I over heard the doctors saying “oh that poor girl” it ruined me for a bit I was so depressed and hearing jokes about it from random people always poked at my diagnosis in silence to me. Now it’s like I forget I even have it most days. Just wanted to give you some potential encouragement hugs 🤗 ❤️🩹
@@lexi9188 Not gonna lie Lexi, I really really needed to hear this. I’m still trying to find a way to live w it bc I also haven’t had breakouts in a minute. I just hope that the “talk” won’t scare away the potential guy I’m talking with bc he means so much to me. Even then, I don’t want it affect my dating life much either bc I still so young & I want to learn how to live with it. It’s not the end of the world , I keep telling myself this but it’s my biggest struggle & now my biggest insecurity.

Just last week I had the herpes talk with a gorgeous young woman I've been dating for a month (no sex prior obviously lol). Her response was that there are scarier things than herpes in the world. She is a nursing assistant and we shared and discussed information as well as a safe sex plan. But, it brought us closer; it didn't send her running and screaming. In fact, she became more vulnerable and shared some of her past and worries with me as well. And now we feel even closer and I know that our connection is genuine as she's interested in me as a person and that a minor (and manageable) skin condition isn't a major reason to abandon the entire relationship...

This is a horrible virus to be infected with. Every single month I get an outbreak and every time I get it I avoid touching my husband and kids because I don’t want them to know this suffering. I make them wipe their hands and faces with rubbing alcohol if I suspect they might have come into contact with the virus. I’m really tired of having this this thing and pray the cure happens in my lifetime. I pray your research can continue and shows success at eradicating/reducing the virus in its latent state. I pray it moves quickly to human trials.

I realise this is an old post; however, I'd like to contribute (whether or not it's viewed). I need to write this down to make it real.
I have had a new diagnosis of HPV within the last 3 weeks. I never thought this would be in my future, but here I am. I became infected by my ex-partner. I take responsibility for my actions. This is the one time in the last 50+ years that I did not demand a negative screen. It's a long story that no one wants to hear, but I want to reiterate that it only takes one error in judgement to affect the rest of my life. I thought I was being careful, selective, and cautious. In my wildest dreams, I never thought I'd be in this place at my age. I'm disappointed, hurt, and mortified, and I think I'm angry. In addition to being in pain, I am adjusting to the fact that this is going to be a part of my profile for the rest of my life. I am humiliated. I'm of the vintage that this is a stigma.
I am hopeful that research will yield solutions that are available to everyone.

I have suffered from severe cold sore outbreaks in my nose and on my mouth since I was 3 years old. I have lived most of my life in constant fear of passing the virus unwittingly onto someone else or spreading it to other parts of my own body. as I sit here with a full bottom lip because of recent outbreak, this gives me so much hope, I really hope a good treatment becomes available soon (wish I was one of those mice right now!) , I live with autoimmune blood cancer (Dx 2020) and have had hsv1 all my life but since diagnosis for the cancer the hsv1 outbreaks are 10fold, years ago i would get one blister, now I have cauliflower blisters which spread out much more, life is unbearable, eating and drinking is so uncomfortable and brings on depression when an outbreak is so bad. This is so important, not just to relieve the painful physical symptoms of this virus and prevent spread - but especially for the mental health effects carrying a virus like this has. Diagnosed 1 year now. And the past 3 months every night I thank god and myself that I haven’t put myself out of this misery. The people who suffer like me all hide from each other. I could never imagine giving this to anyone. No one should take on that risk. I would never want anyone to feel how I feel. I’m growing more and more despondent each day. I only get symptoms and not the actual outbreak and it's debilitating. I've only had 2 outbreaks after contracting it 28 yrs ago, but I still get the itching and burning to this day! If you eat, sleep and drink good foods and try and stress free the outbreaks become less and less and become less transmittable too. I know the hope for the functional cure in HSV2 is less, but as someone who suffers from HSV1 I find myself getting slightly jealous I don't have 2 because there are currently way more clinical trials for HSV2 as opposed to one. they are mostly therapeutic, however, but there are many different places including Moderna that are currently offering clinical trials for a therapeutic vaccine to greatly reduce symptoms!
