    I have gone round and round (see what I did there lol) with traveling with my guns. To and from hunts and matches. Flying back and forth from everywhere 😆 and I finally settled on what I think works perfect for me. I run pecan air cases but take the foam out and put my rifles in a soft sided case and put that inside the hard case. This gives me more options. On hunts I can load most of my hunting clothes to fills the gaps and can also an handgun and ammo boxes until I get to the 50lb limit. For the range and matches it’s nice to fly or drive with the soft inside the hard and once at the range I can carry just the soft side. Works clutch. Appreciate the video and am really digging the channel.

    10:59 true. If it has a hole, it needs a lock. Hot tip: alway use keyed locks (not TSA combo locks) and also good idea to have another set on “opened” lock inside the case when traveling. Just in case TSA needs to cut off your locks (this happens). 😉 cheers

    Nice video. I just got 2 of these exact cases. So i am getting ready for outlining and cutting. Love the case

      Hi Brian! Yeah, still loving mine although with a 22 lb rifle in it, it's a heavy son of a gun! But from a protection standpoint, I have no issues banging it around in my truck. Hey, thanks for watching my friend!

      @The 4GunGuy my rifle is only 18 lbs. Lol. Love it. I am so glad I caught your episode on rifle placement and keeping weight off the scope. I have never thought of it that way. But I finished the cutting today and did it the way you described. I am so glad I saw it first before I cut it the wrong way. Thanks again. Great job

    Excellent video, specially the point about the critical orientation direction of the rifle. Thank you!

      @@The4GunGuy absolutely and thanks for posting. I used to compete in small bore and still have several Anschutz that I take to the range but I’m just starting in the big bore and bought a hybrid Sig cross stx for range and hunting. Now need to put a descent scope on it. Any suggestions on sub $1500 scope?

      @@735Secure I have a video dropping Thursday on PRS scope considerations and in it I break down MY 3 tiers of scope options. It's not comprehensive, but should give you and idea of what to look for in a scope (sounds like you already know that!) and the price tiers that are available. Now, let's talk $1,500 scopes. I'm going to give you some easy advice...Go onto the PRS website (www.precisionrifleseries.com/memberships) and get a PRS rimfire membership (the cheapest one) for $40 for the year. Then scroll down and you'll see all the partners that give you discounts. My main go to partner for optics is EuroOptic. For example, without a PRS membership an Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56mm DD SF 34mm APRS1 FFP IR MIL is normally $1,562.49, but with the discount it's $866.24. This is just an example, but generally, you'll save 10% - 15% off of retail being a PRS member, so for your $40 membership, you could get $150 discount on a scope, mount, binoculars, etc... Back to the scopes, I'd look at Athlon, Vortex, Leupold (although not a fan of their reticles), and Bushnell. There are others out there, but these are my main go to scope brands. I love Vortex for the no nonsense guarantee, especially if you're going to use it hunting...You drop it off a cliff? Total replacement, no questions asked. I get nothing for recommending any of these products. Also, if you watch my older videos on scopes you'll see how I compare and come to my purchase decision. Sorry for the long winded response, but this stuff really excites me and I love to help people!

    I’ll be flying with my rifle for the first time in december, and just got my V800 ready for it! Had to get new foam, I was just using egg crate foam for a while, but I want a proper cut foam for flying.

      @The4GunGuy  Před rokem +1

      Hi Womfat! Yeah, makes a big difference when that rifle fits snug in the foam since you never know how those baggage handlers are going to treat your luggage. Thanks for watching my friend!

      Hi Max! Thanks for watching my friend! Gonna keep those soft cases just in case I need 'em someday. I do miss the pockets in the side that could just throw stuff in, but that Pelican is a BOSS of a case, especially for just one rifle!

    I really wish more case manufacturers would get away from pull and pluck foam. Solid quality foam gives a much cleaner, more precise fit, and a more durable result than the squared off, ill fitting pluck crap. Yes, I have gotten really good results with pull and pluck by ignoring the pluck and cutting it properly. And it can be made pretty durable with MULITIPLE coats of Plasti-Dip spray. But it actually takes more care when trying to get clean cuts with the pull and pluck compared with solid foam because it's easy for the pluck sections to get torn loose while cutting. And it takes quite a bit of Plasti-dip. I used four cans on my last case. Great result, but at $9 a can, that adds up, and it takes quite a bit of time laying down light coats, letting them flash, and repeating... I honestly don't even see why anyone would want pull and pluck. There's nothing you can do with it that you can't so with solid foam, better. You say, "I don't have an electric knife"... Me neither! I used those cheap extendable utility knives... You know. The type that you use, then snap off the used end to get a fresh edge. They're cheap as chips. And by extending them out you can easily get a slim, sharp blade that works REALLY well cutting the foam. They're CHEAP! So buy a handful and grab a fresh one when they start to get dull. It really is that easy. And you'll get a MUCH nicer, more custom look and fit than trying to use the pull and pluck crap.

      Good point Iron Camel! I'll flip the foam over and all is well. Thanks for watching my friend!

  • @Xavieus
    @Xavieus Před rokem

    The orientation doesn't matter so much. The foam is hugging and supporting the entire weapon and not putting force/pressure on the scope or mount. It would be like holding the rifle upside down in your hands (not holding it by the scope of course. Either way if it's a quality scope that can handle large caliber recoil, it's fine in the case. I think it looks better if the gun is right side up when you open it. Many manufacture cases orient them in the 'wrong way' and some aren't even foam encased but plastic that holds the weapon put.

    • @735Secure
      @735Secure Před 8 měsíci

      Not exactly. When traveling, cases get dropped, banged around and abused. A better analogy is if you don’t mind dropping your rifle on its scope with little foam and hard plastic as an outer layer, then orientation doesn’t matter. Ultimately it’s about maximizing protection within reason and taking the least chances when you’re handing off your multi thousand dollar rifle to a guy at the airport that has had a bad day and expecting it to be in the same condition when you pick it up at the destination to compete with. Competing is about consistency and minimizing long tail event occurrences (long tail SD events), to me the type of case and rifle orientation is no different. Just my humble opinion!

    Question. Looking for something to secure a rifle and handgun in my SUV with a steel cable. With a solid padlock, would this case prevent a tweaker or some criminal with a crowbar/ flathead screwdriver from getting inside?

    • @The4GunGuy
      @The4GunGuy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hi Rubberduck! My thought here is If they can get to the case, they'll just take it out of the SUV and open it in another location. With battery powered hand tools today, they could use a battery powered jig saw or even circular saw. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're thinking of securing your firearm while you say, eat lunch or something, fine. But if you're thinking of leaving it overnight in the vehicle, I'd advise against it no matter what container you use. Hope this helps and thanks for watching my friend!
