Any chance you guys consider maybe lowering the volume of the intro/outro? It's kinda annoying.
@Dahn that can be sarcasm and recently Spider-Man game only let us down moderately
Why is there a censor/black circle on the no straight roads picture?
Moments when yahtzee halts the swearing and hyperbole to just lay out his true feelings on a game are always the best
Radical Raddish True, but the contrast is what gives those moments their impact, so let‘s keep him swearing most of the time.
Thank you for making me even more excited to see this video.
@Duckie_Plays not if EA has anything to say about it!!!!
certainly momentous, but I'd say the writing behind the clever twists of phrase and the signature metaphors takes the cake
I enjoyed the fast paced throwaway glee of battletoads as semi-ironic nostalgia. Not your thing, but I'm 100% onboard that their collision needed work, the only realistic way to fight is a lot of tongue juggling... I'm sure there's another semi-ironic oral sex joke in there somewhere.
"I hate your game". Wow, even for Yahtzee that was pretty blunt. I love it. "Kids these days express their feelings with memes and mass shootings", yup, seems about right.
When the ZP 2020 compilation arrives next year that Mass Shooting line will more than likely be edited out.
Joey Parkhill that’s sad, truth hurts and is also funny, confronting it through comedy is great.
Memes, mass shootings and memes about mass shootings.
@@lastfirst5863 I agree 100% with your statement.
It was said with such a blunt force that I wanted to lean back and put a hand on my chest and gasp dramatically.
"I hate your game." Damn Yahtzee didn't even sugar coat it. Top 5 worst is going to be an interesting list this year
Top 5 Best might be renamed "1 game I actually liked and 4 that didn't make me want to commit violent acts on myself"
bird3713 so spiritfarer then?
@@bird3713 2020 had some good games actually.
@@od4361 I think most gamers would say so, but Spiritfarer seems to be the only game that Yahtzee had a positive review on.
@@bird3713
You also have Doom Eternal.
Fun fact: the reason Battletoads feels like it's written to try and be like Rick & Morty is because the lead writer really did work on Rick & Morty.
Then shouldn't it be like, funny?
@@rougheredge6705 Forgive me for saying this, but some of us say that about _Rick & Morty_ .
@@wandererwerewolf477 How dare you! Rick & Morty is funny... at times... subjectively. I guess I kind of see it as more of an interesting experience than a "laugh your something-or-other off" show, granted, but yeah.
Every writer is fallible, though, especially if they get a bit burnt out and/or overconfident.
@@wandererwerewolf477 There's no accounting for taste of course, but even if you don't like Rick and Morty it clearly has something that the writing in Battletoads doesn't recreate, even if that's something you don't like.
Think of it this way, if you ALREADY don't like Rick and Morty then I can't imagine how grating a worse version of Rick and Morty would be to you.
@@rougheredge6705 Exactly. Plus, tbh, I was never a fan of Battletoads even when it was new.
"You'd think the actual weapon of choice for an indie rock musician would be a double barreled shotgun"
oof
I thought that was bold even for him. Respect.
Mind explaining?
@@varp4557 Kurt Cobain allegedly shot himself in the head with one
@@mityakiselev Allegedly? That is almost certainly what happened; the murder theories are all insane conspiracy theories.

"wake up in the future to find themselves forgotten has-beens" well at least Battletoads' developers understand their situation
I think NSR looks like a hybrid of the Double Fine games with the early Gorillaz designs
It reminds me of Scott Pilgrim for some reason
I think it looks a whole lot like DieBuster, specially the ending theme. But no one watched that anime.
so, a double fine game?
Now I wanna draw that lol. Murdoc ans Zuke! Eewaa

Well, at least No Straight Roads got the “I want to like you, but your gameplay isn’t good.” ...Certainly STILL did a lot better then Yatzee just absolutely stomping on battletoads, grinding it into a sand belt, and then pouring gasoline on it before flicking a cigarette on it.
@Simple Weirdo Yep, it gets a C+ gameplay but an A+ in Music, Characters, Story, Visual and Details. I love it and will definitely by a sequel.
NSR has the heart most AAA games have been missing for years, so even if it is a bit jank, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
God that “I hate your game” is so serious.
Kinda gave me chills for a sec and it wasn't even aimed at me >.>
I just love the dialogue in NSR. Its all so lively and full of character to suit the sick beats. DJSS is probably my favourite if the bunch, he wears that DJ stereotype swimmingly and has great lines both in English and Japanese
It's definitely my favorite game now, and I listen to all the songs online daily
His ego is so massive that collapses in on thatself like a black hole.
Combat for NSR is a bit off, but I still love the game. The characters, cutscenes, art style, and music is on point and really makes the game shine.
That axe to grind joke was an amazing use of visual humour and a pun simultaneously well done
Having worked on a game Yahtzee reviewed in 2012, I can tell you that developers do watch him reviews when they come out.
"I reserve my trivia-remembering brain for Red Dwarf quotes"
Too smegging right
Smeeeg Heeed
I've never even heard of that show until this video.
I'm fine thankyou Susan.
It has been so long since I have watched red dwarf I had trouble remembering a quote to change up and post.
So, what is it?
Yeah the NSR review was 100% exactly what I expected, I love the game but it needed more time in the oven.
I've been Playing it this month easily my favorite game. C+ on the actual gameplay straight +A's on the presentation, characters, Story, and music. I've been replaying and watching.
I feel that’s kinda what was gonna happen since it’s from amateurs and even if the gameplay needs work, they did good to even better than good on most of the other stuff that it kinda balances things out. Hopefully lessons were learned and if they’re able to put out more stuff, their gameplay is at a high a standard as their creative world and character concepts and writing.
So far Battletoads looks to be the clear front-runner for Yahtzee's Worst Game of 2020.
I'm betting on the Blandest list, personally.
@@seamusburke639 no, i can't see it going anywhere but the hated list. i'll tip on avengers for blandest.
@@demondays3956 Well, you fucking called it...
The Last Of Us Part 2: Yay! We're safe!
Future: Yeah, about that.
In it's defense, No straight Roads just got a large bugfix patch just the other day, rolsoving many issues.
I'd recommend this game on the presentation alone: It's not ultra long either so my vote is you'll have a nice time, but fleshing out the cast more with DLC would also be an excellent idea.
"Getting a large bugfix after you realise your game is shit" is something we've got to stop encouraging though.
Surely any number of playtesters could have discovered the issues BEFORE asking for money from your audience? Instead it's like "everybody will buy our game and then once people start talking badly about it we'll fix it and try to get a second wave of buyers", or "don't bother putting effort into the game, people will buy it and then expect it to be fixed but since we'll have their money we won't have to fix it."
It's worth noting, sure, but I don't know if I'd count it as a defence.
at least they were quick about getting to that, bit of a shame they didn't catch more issues before official release
I'm a bit more willing to let it slide since this is quite literally their first game, but yeah. Definitely could have had more time to develop
@@sentientsardine9729 this is the first notable game from Metronomik and also their first game. Plus, its an indie team from Malaysia made up of newly graduates, even if the director himself, Wan Hazmer, has had some experience in video games before. Though I do get where you're coming from if the situations were different.
I've been Playing it this month easily my favorite game. C+ on the actual gameplay straight +A's on the presentation, characters, Story, and music. I've been replaying and watching.
Ha. Axe to grind. Top notch double entendre there
Him simply saying: "I hate your game" is unexplainable in its rawness.
Not gonna lie though, No Straight Roads is probably my favorite game of the generation. (not the best game, but my favorite). haven't had a pure fun game like that since the 08-12 era of games. Reminds me of games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Asura's Wrath where the amazing presentation makes up for the shoddy basic gameplay.
I've been Playing it this month easily my favorite game. C+ on the actual gameplay straight +A's on the presentation, characters, Story, and music. I've been replaying and watching.
well anything with the name "lolipop chainsaw" seems worth checking out
“Hello, GameStop? Do you have BattleToads: 9000 Mudkips Edition?”
"I reserve my trivia-remembering brain for Red Dwarf quotes"
You, too? Ah, smeg.
No Straight Roads is the worst playing game that I _want_ to keep playing in spite of it because everything feels so...earnest? I can't really articulate it but the game feels like it was made with love, not nescesarily skill.
And in a world where Tripple A games can shit out Hulk suddenly channelling a text to speech program and have subtitles that describe actions better than the animators could, that makes all the difference in the world.
...Second boss is a bit of a bitch to fight since there's _so_ many things to react to at once. And actually having checkpoints here and there during the bossfights would be nice.
I agree. It was made by a small indie Malaysian team, they had no reason to be greedy, and didn't have the resources to refine the game as well as AAA titles. Unfortunately it's not the charming kind of jank, but I hope the game does well. I hope they get enough money to make more games and learn from what few mistakes there were with NSR.
If they manage to overcome those technical problems, they're going to make amazing games. I just know it.
I have such mixed feelings on it. Like, I really want to like it more than I do, and I like what they were going for, but the execution was just...not great. It's playable, but has a lot of bugs and IIRC there are some levels where it is just about impossible to get an S rank on Crazy difficulty in single player due to the way the game was made. And yet, I played the 1010 fight like 10 times, just for the heck of it, because it's still sort-of good.
I wouldn't reccommend it to anyone at it's current price point, but if it were like $20, I'd probably give a lot more praise.
So basically they tried their hardest but it was still not enough?
@@sethleoric2598 Seems like it. From an update video I saw, the director explained that they're mostly made of new talent, and recent graduates. He didn't want to use it as an excuse, but it does explain the lack of technical polish.
well one patch for the bugs has been put out already
The premise of No Straight Roads reminds me of a picture story I had as a child called The Worst Band in the Universe.
The Sex Bob-ombs have a picture book?!
His review of battletoads is so obviously objectively wrong
Amphibians don’t even HAVE external testicles
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
The second he dissed Biker Mice From Mars he lost his hill to stand on.
SATIRE!
He could be right or wrong...even now!!
That’s how hard your grinding into the

I watched a few game play videos of NSR and all I could think was, "WOW, this game looks amazing and charming" and then I watched a bit more and thought "Ah... this game LOOKS amazing and charming... but it does not look like it would be fun to play". Glad to see at least Yahtzee agrees.
I enjoyed it, so its one ofthose "your mileage mya vary" things
It's buggy and imperfect but EXTREMELY fun to play. There's a reason why it managed to develop a small, yet extremely active fanbase in just a few weeks. It honestly reminds me of gaming back in the day, when something didn't have to be perfect with next gen graphics to still be *fun*.
From what I've seen, NSR could have been much better if they embraced the music aspect of the game. The idea of the enemies attacking in time to the music was neat, but sometimes the ost hid the beat or lost it entirely. Not to mention the fact that the PLAYER had no such compunction. You could swing that guitar all you liked, and that didn't feel right to me.
SnivyTries Well, maybe that's the games real view on rock-music. Just hit that guitar however you like, the resulting din is rock. ;-)
It’s... it’s trying very, very hard, and I appreciate 75% of what it did.
i have seen biker mice on tv, for real.
there was one episode which stuck to me about acid rain, which melted their bikes, but not them, which i already at that age found odd
They have a Super Nintendo game!
Well they are biker mice from mars, I'm not sure you should question what kind of rain they can or can not be in.
I had comic books and action figures for them. As well as fond memories. I think biker mice from mars was pretty prevalent just not for very long which is a damn shame
I loved the theme song from the show. The show was OK enough..
Yahtzee’s review of NSR was the most most positive one I’ve ever heard so far in his videos.
Check out subnautica or minecraft review
Wait until you see his review of Undertale.
Damn the emotion in his voice when he said he hates battletoads is a nice change of pace.
If there's no weight or impact to the fighting then we can't actually consider this a battle toads game.
That's the thing, there IS. The animation in combat is fantastic. literally no idea what he's on about.
@@derekgettys1626 I can't vouch for how it plays but it does look pretty crisp.
"Next week a game people actually care about". Are you referring to The Avengers? Because I don't know if I'd say all that lmao
Edit: I know it’s Avengers. That was a joke
I want to hear him whine about Iron Harvest.
Yep. The next one's the Avengers
Could also be Tony Hawk. People definitely care about that one...
Pascal Blank it was kind of a rhetorical question. Escapist confirmed in the comments last week that Avengers would be next. I just watched it an hour ago. It was nice
Post ZP stream shows it. It's Marvels Avengers alright.
You know at least Shows like Harley Quinn isn't ashamed to be a animated comic book show unlike a lot of DC live movies that are so insecure about their origins they have to pepper in a flurry of swears and bodies to seem mature.
Yeah, it just does comic booky stuff WHILE peppering in needless swears and violence.
@@GargusSCP its an R rated comedy. It's tone at least fits with Harley quinn.
Swearing aside it’s funny and joyously messy.
when he does not trash NSR you know he still managed to enjoy it despite its flaws
He still said it was shit, though
@@memoryfest1868 he said the *gameplay* was shit. So, maybe just watch a playthrough.
Just finished it tonight. Gameplay is super fucking finicky but the story and characters are damn good for what it tries to do, plus the guitar and drum solos are sick (if you can ever find a moment to rest and listen to them amidst the chaos.)
I was hoping the new Battletoads would look more like Streets of Rage 4, not Teen Titans Go. 😠
I suggest watching and reading other reviews.
Meh it’s more like the tmnt reboot on Nickelodeon
It is Teen Titans Go, because the original battletoads the jokes were in the gameplay itself. Everything was limited back in the time so they were extremely creative about the game. This game entirely missed the point, it's trying to be a Saturday morning cartoon with some gameplay bits thrown in with100 of jokes a second and hoping one lands and then they put in the battletoads game part.
Damn, this was one of my favorite no punctuation videos to date. I know Yahtzee is known for sharp wit, but this one was particularly witty and also particularly blunt.
Loved the sparks on the guitar driving home the axe to grind remark.
If the devs actually do gather around to see how Yahtzee reviews their games, I'm imagining the NSR devs sitting down and getting increasingly excited as he talks about their game and how many wonderful things it has and then their faces the moment he turns to the gameplay.
Just when I thought he was getting soft
So... wait, Yahtzee "sort of" liked NSR? Because when he hates a game, he pounces on it like a bear starving straight out of hibernation that somehow found its way onto a WWE match and decided to join in on the fun.
He was markedly polite on the second half of the video.
It has its charm in story, character, overall design, and hidden depths here a d there. Combat is just an ass and unsatisfying, and had it's fair share of bugs. That's what I got out of it.
Yeah, everything except combat was great, combat would have been good with enemies reacting appropriately to getting bonked with a guitar and some sort of defense from getting stun locked, but how everything is synced up with music really made the game. As for bugs, the only one I noticed was one time a level took a few seconds to render after I spawned in. The other known one that's even on the Wikipedia is health pick ups not showing up during rap battle boss fight on Switch version.
@@jacob33331 can confirm, they don't. The DK West fights after the first one are hellish to do alone on Switch.

1:01 I actually loved Biker Mice from Mars growing up.
I genuinely paused the video to try to read the "Gru's plan" meme at 3:54, but all I could make out is that the first panel starts with "Load up", the second panel says "shoot up federal building", and the last two start with "Get head".
"Now that the kids these days express their feelings with memes and mass shootings"
Bruh
hey, its the real Justin Y, haven't seen you in a long time.
When the ZP 2020 compilation arrives next year that Mass Shooting line will more than likely be edited out.
Justin, why do i see you everywhere recently
On a more serious note, I find it highly ironic for Rock music to be the ones to portray themselves as the rebellious freedom fighters of music considering that Rock music was the mainstream juggernaut for over 50 years. There was outright hostility towards the emerging hip hop scene that help kill off disco. Until the 90’s and 2000’s the music scene became what this game presented; bloated, manipulative and self serving media empire that crushed anything that didn’t fit the desires of music labels.
Bruh indeed
"Shitaly" is the most I've laughed at ZP in a couple years I think.
"Expired mayonnaise creme' brulee" is just foul. Bleh, what a mental image. Well done, sir.
"Memes and mass shootings" after 8 years of consuming your content you have finally broken me with a statement.
Still buying a physical copy of No Straight Roads for Switch. Indie devs burgeoning with that much creative talent need some funding so they can improve for the future. Plus, that soundtrack whips ass.
This is EXACTLY why I got the game. I don't care how many bugs it has or how clunky the controls might feel. There's a lot of passion put into every little bit of this game and I want to see more of it, and to see more from this developer. All they needed was either more time or more funding, and I at least can contribute to one of those.
They just need people with technical skills.

You see this is why I like Yahtzee
How I like to describe it to my friends is, “Fun but flawed.”
To me if you watch the trailer and look interested in it and know that it is a pretty short game, I say go ahead and play it, I think it’s still pretty fun despite it’s short comings. Plus the boss designs are so much fun and the music is fantastic.
Ride to hell: retribution didn’t not get the swears so battletoads must be something awful indeed
Well, nobody expected Ride to Hell to be worth anything.
Rare thought it would be a good idea to outsource the game's development to a mobile game dev apparently Dala Studio's to be exact, I'm not farmiliar with them nor their work so I can't say if it's true or not, In retrospect it's not that bad of a game, is it awfully basic? yes no question but it's not the atrocity the majority is making it out to be.
I honestly think most of the peeve comes from it's simplicity coupled with some inexperienced/questionable design choices.
RtH:R was autopsied, since it was made from a long string of development hell and poor decisions turning into an absolute mess
Battletoads is an almost competent game that just is terrible to play(not much of a downgrade from the original in that regard)
@@prcervi Honestly, at least the original Battletoads is a fun and satisfying beat-em-up when it isn't trying to be weird and gimmicky. (It's just trying to be weird and gimmicky a lot of the time.)
Conspiracy theory:
Battletoads was secretly developed by gamespot in response to the meme lords calling up and asking for battletoads. The hope being to develop such an awful game that no one would even want to ironically call up and ask for a copy
Honestly this is at least .01% feasible.
This and the Shaqfu reboot are really good reasons why you shouldn't take a meme too far. You end up getting really shitty games and it kills the meme dead (not that the meme was worth keeping alive but it wasn't worth killing in such a permanent and brutal way).
The only flaw with that is that battletoads is actually a really fun game with flowing and fun combat... and perfectly feels like a battletoads game. This is the furthest off base I've ever seen yahtzee be
Yathzhee hating the new battletoads just might be one of the most obvious things to ever happen right next him not liking the last of us 2.

I don't know if he hated it for obvious reasons, unless the bad combat is obvious. I watched the video of him playing it and the combat just looked terrible. I had actually wanted to play it myself before that, but after watching him play it, it was just obviously not a good game. I could see people who liked the cartoon parts, but not the gameplay - it's just badly programmed.

I worked on the Tex Murphy game Tesla Effect, and yes we did watch your review with interest. And we *were* surprised at the relatively good tone, and to have even landed on your radar. Kinda joyous actually. :D Hopefully we left a good impression overall. It was a game out of its time and we reveled in that.
I watched this review because I just finished Brütal Legend and there was a comment on the Brütal Legend review saying that it was referenced here.

Damn, Yatz. I see what you did there.
I just realised that the ending with Yahtzee using a golf club to smash a toad into a giant dartboard comes from the fact that he used to live in Queensland, Australia. We do that down here because the fucking cane toads are _a fucking biblical plague!_ It's practically an Australian's civic duty to kill a cane toad any time we see one, with whatever weapons are at hand.

This is exactly what I hoped would be Yahtzee's thoughts on NSR.
I was a bit on the fence with no straight roads but after this review I think I'll check it out. I started listening to the soundtrack and it's awesome. Thx Yahtzee, absolutely love your indie reviews :D
I latched on to the red dwarf reference like toilet paper at the onset of a pandemic in middle America lol
I remember watching the trailers for No Straight Roads and getting a pretty good understanding of what they were going for style and story wise but no clue of what the gameplay was.
As well as TMNT, Battletoads and Biker Mice from Mars, there was Avenger Penguins (Which was good) and Samurai Pizza Cats (Which is one of the worst things I've ever seen)
The visual representation of the NSR bosses is hilariously spot on.
Love it when Yahtz gets blunt
