Tonado Mer was an incredible machine. It's almost easy to forget these HW bots weight 220 lbs when you see them go flying across the arena. The U.K. has produced some pretty mean machines as well (Team Big Brother's "Little Sister" from Sussex comes to mind). It was one of the best flippers ever. Thanks for watching....
fresque There's a difference between a practical spinner design and one that's just the builder showing off. Redrum is basically "if Nightmare was a drum spinner".
fresque I know, and it is powerful but still practical, getting up to speed quickly and having a lot of bite. However, it doesn't build up nearly as much energy as Redrum's insanely powerful but impractical ICE-powered drum.
The problem with the vertical blades is that you have hit them from a particular angle (head on, usually). The horizontal spinners don't have that problem- as long as they make contact, perfect. Plus, you can't attack a horizontal spinner from behind- because there really isn't a "behind" to attack.
If a motor is loud enough, the commentators may point out how loud it is. They've got professional sound engineers who use professional sound equipment and software to balance everything out.
sadly redrum had one fatal flaw... the drum was spinning the wrong direction... flip the motor and drive gears and it would have been a brutally efficient machine.
That and the gyroscopic precession which makes it really hard to turn - it has a tendency to turn over when turning. Horizontal spinners don't have that issue.
Redrum is kind of a wacky design; it is kind of amusing, in its design, too, even. Tornado Mer looks like much just a rather awesome, sensible, apparently formidable design.

what did it do spin upwards or down, the old what looks like 240i makes it hard to see
It span downwards towards the front, so it just stalls every time it hits something, needed to spin backwards like every other vertical spinner.
