Don’t miss the movie event, only in theaters December 6. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
For a film that is considered “the toughest shoot in film history”, THE ABYSS is a visual masterpiece!
It's not just a visual masterpiece, this is , for me, the film where Cameron got consistently the best performances from his cast. Probably *because* the conditions of the shoot were so claustrophobic and realistic.
I think Werner Herzog would politely contradict about that. They towed a ship through the jungle and over a mountain in Fitzcarraldo 10 years prior to Abyss.
Yea I think of it as "that movie that almost killed Ed Harris"
Except for that last bit where it comes out of the water...fake AF
Cameroon treated them like shjt.
See this is what more studios should do. Remaster the classics in 4K and release them in theaters. Its a great way to get the younger generation into the movies with out doing a remake or a reboot.
honestly you’re so real for this
Preach!
That's how I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark was in theaters when they did a special showing.
considering what they do with remakes and reboots, no
I'm looking forward to the Remastered 4K of Spaceballs
This movie needs to be released everywhere for everyone. A true masterpiece.
Is this the special editon extended version or just a cleaned up version of the theatrical release?
Just not in the UK
@@WilliamWorfordThey say the 4k version is "30 minutes longer than the original", it must be the extended version then. That makes sense, because the movie ending makes little sense without those 30 minutes.
@doNaldMusk-h28-hfkslP18 "excessive runtime" That is funny. I think it is a rather normal length, telling the story takes the time it takes. Personally, I never thought highly of cutting movies down just because the audience doesn't have the attention span necessary.
Everywhere, for everyone, all at once.
Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio should have each won an Oscar for their roles in this film. They were subjected to things that no actor should EVER be asked to do, yet they managed to deliver performances that still evoke the same kind of emotion to this very day.
The very fact that we are still talking about this film and their performances is a bigger prize than any Oscar. There are so many films that have won and are rarely get talked about ever again.
@@Oceansta
When this film came out, the Oscar’s still meant something. But I see what you’re saying.
Neither of them won Oscars for this?! Wtaf, they were amazing in this!
Ed Harris was absolutely phenomenal! The scene where he saves his wife is out of this world performance!
this movie still hits in 2023. the love for exploration and the ocean is a timeless thing
I loved the way he seemed to really live there, like how he moved around underwater like an old pro.
Wish he was at least nominated for an Oscar.
uuuf that scene is the best
@@kailee87 …and not just from that movie! I was convinced it’s real, never in any other movie I saw anything like that, blown away! From there Ed Harris became my favorite actor.
For me, this is the best James Cameron movie ever made. Ahead of its time. Can't get enough of The Abyss. A classic masterpiece.
I would say ONE of his best, far better than anything hes done in last 25 years for sure.
Nah its good but doesn't even come close to any Terminator movie (directed by himself of course), Aliens or Titanic.
@@Taurosaur I absolutely love all those movies, especially Terminator 2 and Aliens.... but The Abyss is THE Best movie he ever made. It was way, way ahead of its time.
The longer edition is better, for sure, but still loses the thread a bit towards the end.
Ok.. Terminator, T2 and this one.. than He lost his touch I dont know..why
The music by Alan Silvestri is worth a mention, it's absolutely fantastic whether it's atmosphere / tension building, or when it becomes exciting during action scenes, or when the tone becomes dramatic / emotional. That finale is spine-tingling and worth buying the soundtrack for alone.
100%
The track Finale still brings a shiver to my spine - especially the Erich Kunzel version
Its atmosphere
Wednesday. August 9, 1989. I was just a teen when this movie came out. It was an amazing experience. Coincidentally, there were already two underwater sci-fi movies that came before it, Leviathan and Deep Star Six. Both films were flops. The Abyss was also a financial flop but it was a critical success amongst movie critics. It would later go on to receive four Academy award nominations but only won the Oscar for best visual effects. It also won the Saturn award for best music. It had a beautiful theme song.
Still remember seeing this on opening day in 1989. When credits rolled, the only sound you could hear was the entire audience crying. Absolute masterpiece and stunning achievement.
@otterpoet Thank you for this little glimpse of the good old times.
Yup. And that was the chopped down version...
The ‘directors cut’ or ‘full version’ is so much better too. Hope that’s what we’re getting here. Underrated film-one of my favorites.
Shame is was the hacked cinema cut 😒
I love this movie but I do not believe for one second that "the only sound you could hear was the entire audience crying" lol. Alan Silvestri's score is loud enough.
I love this film. One of Cameron's most underappreciated flicks in my opinion.
Easily his most underrated film and True Lies his most overrated film.

I've easily seen this movie 30 times since 1989 when I watched it in the cinema. It was and remains my fav Cameron movie. A masterpiece.
I saw it too in 1989, one of the most powerful and moving theater experiences in my life !!!! :) For me it is still his masterpiece even today !!! :)
This was when I thought James Cameron had finally arrived, it kept him on top till Terminator 2 and Aliens 2. But then he made the saccharine Titanic and I realized, he was just an action director, a popcorn flick director. The Abyss was an exception.
1989?...
Time flies so fast.
@@StephenDedalus74 the movie had overwhelming visuals, action, emotions and lots of heart. I left the cinema with the same kind of awe and wonder after watching Spielberg's Close Encounters of the First Kind.
@@denniszenanywhere That's a bit harsh on Titanic IMO. He's not merely an action director. The entire sinking is expertly crafted and full of heartfelt drama and suspense. Not many directors are able to helm such spectacle scenes.
A masterpiece from the 90's and it is still one of my favorites. Looking forward to seeing the remastered edition.
Watched in the 90’s. Became a sat diver for years and years, spent countless hours on the bottom breathing HE, Thank you Cameron .
THE ABYSS is phenomenal, if you haven't seen the making-of documentary, watch it. it's groundbreaking.
I saw it as well, and alot of cast and crew, including James Cameron that almost died making this movie. He is the worst director in Hollywood to work with, and he brags about it.
@@mamabazzz The greater good.
By far the most insane making-of I've ever seen for any movie. It was more of an expedition than a movie shoot.
@@mamabazzz The spirit of Stanley Kubrick
@@mamabazzz He's since chilled out - he noted how he visited one of Ron Howard's sets and was taken by how happy everyone everyone was. So he tries to find his 'inner Ron Howard' on his own productions. But he's still a perfectionist who won't let anyone f*ck up the quality of his movies.
I know folks the Avatar films a lot of crap for being underwritten and clichéd but visually, there's not one detail out of place.
One of the best films ever made. When I was doing my firefighter training they showed us the resuscitation scene from this film, as an example of how to stimulate a response in a drowning victim. A film that has truly lasted the test of time.
They did me too during army training. To illustrate the emotional impact of being present when someone is being revived. 👍
"Come on, BREATHE! G0ddammit, BREATHE! G0DDAMMIT, YOU B1TCH, YOU NEVER BACKED AWAY FROM ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE, NOW FIGHT!!!! (*slap) FIGHT!!!! (*slap) FIIIIIIGHT!!!!"
Oh MAN, Ed Harris should've been nominated for an Oscar just for that one scene alone! 😁🏆
It's impossible to act like that. That scene must be real.
The insane demands of repeatedly acting out this scene "until they got it right" was so traumatizing that it's been attributed to why Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio have said they would never work with James Cameron again.
@@BoolitMagnettrue, but then again doing that captured a scene that is nearly impossible to replicate since it’s so visceral and (at least to me) real.
"Virgil Brigman back on the air" still brings me to tears

Thanks JC! This was amazing on the big screen! Perfect sound mix!
Such a underrated gem.
I saw the original cut decades ago(at the original release), with my brothers, our deeply missed pa and ma. My jaw dropped at the face of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, made of water. I was terrified at the drowning scene. I was terrorized of the black vastness of the deep and in complete awe of the purple and blue wonders at the bottom of... the Abyss.
Mastrantonio, Biehn and most of all, Ed Harris are PERFECT.
So is Cameron.
So is Alan Silvestri with the soundtrack.
Marvelous film.
This film released in India in September 1990 (about a year after its American release) when I was just six! I have blurry memories of watching it with my parents (at a theater that doesn't exist today). I recall close to nothing obviously (except perhaps a flicker of the resuscitation scene and some bizarre structure standing out of the sea) but I do remember very distinctly walking out of the theater full of intense, inexplicable wonder. As they say, you may forget actual details of an event but you will never forget "how it made you feel". I carry that wonder in me even today (I'm 39) and what's even better is that I haven't watched the movie since! I wish this one-day release occurs in India too - but I doubt it. I hope to catch it on an OTT platform. This trailer looks stellar and weakens me with nostalgia and awe. ❤
I have the same memory with seeing ET when I was about four years old.
The wonder I felt stayed with me all this time.
It’s a real shame kids don’t get to have the magic that once existed in cinema.
Most of their movies are remakes or sequels to movies forty years old.
❤
The things we love from when we are young never leave us, no matter how old we get. It just makes us love them more, much like this amazing movie.
Thank you for sharing that story! I must have watched this a dozen times on VHS, and a few more later on. To this day, I use the scene with the drowning rat to not only motivate myself, but other people who are going through a difficult situation: "At first you feel like you're drowning, but eventually your lungs relearn how to breathe liquid, like when you were in the womb." It's an incredibly powerful metaphor

Still impressive and a masterpiece also after over 30 years. The set, the story, the music, and the acting are on a different level. It was my childhood favorite and sparked my love for the underwater world. I hope this film will get the recognition it deserved!

This was one of the few movies to literally keep me on the edge of my seat in the theaters. I remember seeing it with my big brother and father.
I stumbled upon this movie years ago, and it has become one of my favorites. It is truly a classic, which I've seen a few times.
At long last, a trailer that actually captures the wonder this movie instills.
This was the best movie that I watched in my younger years... it took me on a ride, it was like 'Avatar' and 'Titanic', 'Dune', it takes you on an adventure. I really wish that the studios do more of these kinds of movies, the one where it takes you on a good ride, a feel good movie and entertain the audience, ignite our imagination. A good sci-fi movie, been a while.

If you haven't seen this movie, it's incredible. An underrated gem from Cameron's early days. Go watch it!
i still prefer Cameron's early years when he was daring something and did not let technology be a excuse to neglect storytelling and characters.
This should be Cameron's highest grossing film....its his masterpiece
And yet, a "one night only" presentation. Which is a shame, as I first saw this on HBO.
It is WAYYYY better than Avatar and really deserves the praise. But only the Special Edition release. Not the shortened theatrical release that didn't include the Tsunami Wave. The expanded dialog scenes are also super important because this movie really needs every second of their characters.
@KRAFTWERK2K6 yes...absolutely. I actual loved the theatrical but you're right... the special edition is the true masterpiece
Still my favorite film to this day. It saddens me to know how hard making this film was on the actors. They went through Hell to bring us one of the most stunning, gripping films I've ever seen. What I wouldn't do to see this in theatre again.

Dennis Murin, the famous VFX designer, worked on the set of this movie, as well as JP just a few years later)
@@cinematicgames You are correct, sir, I worked on the movie's visual effects and I believe the only cgi is the water weenie done by ILM which sadly gets most of the acclaim but the miniature work was phenomenal. The model subs were hung by wires off a giant overhead gantry system and moved via computer "motion control" using stepper motors. There was a miniature rear projection system inside the subs that created the images of the crew inside. They were shot "dry for wet" which meant we smoked up the stage to simulate the particulate matter in water.
