  • A great and very interesting passenger boat powered by a 1100 hp engine it flies over the waves with about 32 knots (60 km/h). As I was lying on a beach in Nessebar (Bulgaria) this hydrofoil caught my attention and now I'm sharing it with you guys. There is a regular service between Nessebar, Pomorie and Sozopol during the summer. Will try it.
    Voskhod (Russian: Восход, literally "Sunrise"), also known as "Design 352", "Design 03521" and Eurofoil, is a type of passenger hydrofoil boat built in the Soviet Union and later in Ukraine. It is intended for use in rivers and lakes, but good seaworthiness allows them to operate in coastal sea areas as well.

    When I a was youngster I used to watch the Komet on the bulgarian coast, I was very impressed as it looked like half jet plane, half boat with a very beautiful and low silhouette. My father and I watched at the hydrofoil through binoculars and sometimes later we used to go and see it in the port. Back in the eighties you could reached coastal cities faster by Komet than by car but it was also quite expensive. I think that one is the most graceful of all Soviet hydrofoils, however they were docked in the early nineties as they were already not profitable. At some point in the 2000 some of the boats were recomissioned by a private company and are now in operation again. I only rode once and it was a great experience back in the comunist era! Thanks for the video!!!

      I used to do exactly the same with my father when I was a child - the only difference that it was in Croatia. He used to explain me how it worked, how it managed to kind of "fly" above the sea and then sometimes we used to go to see it in the town close by. It That was in the 80s. Even today my memories of the holidays on the coast from the time are blue sea, blue sky and this boat on the horizon.

    That is a thing of beauty! With today's new technology, a wider rear foil with jets the back end would lift up to level.

      Everything is possible, but it will cost lots of money! Today without socialistic coutry USSR it is impossible...
      It has unlevelled position because of the matter of getting stability while lifting on the wings. The wings has no mechanics to adjust their "angle of attack". it is hard to me to express in English, sorry.

    I was privileged to use many of those as regular means of transporation up untill 1995 when the last navigation took place on Dniper river. It happed so that I went to school and lived there in 80s through middle 90s and for many folks that kind of a transport seams rather exotic right now but back than it was no more than a regular way of moving around and was rather considered something between bus and the plane. The price range was rather in the same category.

      Well, that was a small town on a bank of a river. It was an intermidiate park point in a way... The ships used to park along the way of the Dniper river adn those were the Kiev, kanev, Cherkasy, kremenchug, komsomolsk, svitlogorske, dneprodzerginsk, and down to Odessa.. Along the river any way.. Is that clear?

      @@Chained2Alice Dnepr river routes is Kiev-Kremenchug, Kremenchug-Kherson and other. "Meteors" ships routes is about 12 hours, all day. They can't move by night. And in Volga river, Astrakhan - Volgograd and other, all Volga. Today this ships presented in Kazan, StPetersburg, Yaroslavl, Kherson. Too much fuel need for them, and motors must changed every 5 years.

    Salute from Odessa! )
    This ship is not Voskhod, this is "Kometa". Voskhod is really another , different model.
    This ship has 2 engines totally 2200hp. Total weight is 60-65 tonn. 120 seats.
    It was in production only in Soviet times, until 1991. No ships have been produced from that time neither in Russia nor in Ukraine. The reason is extremally high fuel consumption while the speed is quite mild - just 65km/h. Flighing on the wings is very expensive, while the ship itself is fantastic impressive.
    There were planty of different models of the hydrofoil ships in USSR: Kometa (for seas), Meteor (for rivers, most resembling to Kometa); Racketa, Voskhod, Kolkhida, Tchaika, Polesie, Burevestnik, Tsyclon, (i do not remember all of them, the istory says, Every ney year has been issued the new model !) We did not have so many cars in production as we had ships...

    Why governments or people abandoned such a wonderful and fast means sea transportation? Is it very expensive to maintain or what?

    • @es00127
      @es00127 Před 8 lety +2

      Reasons are technology improvements and intrinsic limitations of the hydrofoil. Catamaran hull designs can be as fast or faster, in general more fuel-efficient and can comfortably operate in rough waters, where hydrofoils usually require calm waters. Depending on the foil design, then, hydrofoils can have more draught than normal ships, restricting operations to where the water is deep enough. On lakes and rivers where the water level depends on climate, this could be a serious limitation or require important investments in port infrastructures.
