💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I've been wanting to make this lesson for a while.
In this video I teach the top four fingerpicking guitar patterns in the travis picking style.
If you're interested in fingerpicking or travis picking, then these are the essential right hand patterns to learn.
Here's what's in this lesson:
• I describe and show the tabs for all 4 fingerpicking guitar patterns
• I play each pattern through a common chord progression (slow, then fast)
• I demonstrate each pattern in the context of a song
• And I even sneak in a guitar solo (couldn't help it!)
I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful.
Let me know in the comments which of the fingerpicking guitar patterns you like best :)
Thanks! :)
- Jared

This was a WONDERFUL lesson!! ❤
I have been working on the pinch pattern now for months...but I know I'm doing it wrong. I have to change my technique...You're really the ONLY person on here that does such a fine job of showing! It could do with a little bit more zoom in though...and I really didn't understand what you meant re:.fingering the chord? Don't play the 3 fingered G, only 1 finger? And don't that with every chord? What about like the F 4-fingered Barre, or B or F#m barre?
Thanks sir

Thanks 👍🏾
Thanks bro ❤
Helpful
Thank you!!
Lot of People play very beautiful guitar solos and songs.. but non ever explained to a new comer, but you did. that means a lot when someone do really nice thing with a real intention. appreciate your work. thank you.
I absolutely LOVE that you use an actual song as context for your lessons.
This adds purpose toward a real goal, and not just plunking chords without direction. Subscribed.
I learned those picking patters when I was 14 and I can still play with them today, even after forty years of ignoring the guitar. However, now I practice two hrs every day and I’m so happy that those picking patterns made it into my long term muscle memory. Small victory in the war to become better player. Thanks!
Hi from the UK. I'm 58 and just picked up a guitar for the first time. Thanks for the inspiration
Pattern 1-2:08; 2-6:13; 3-7:38; 4-11:23. 10:12 progression Thank you very much, Jared. Excellent teaching.

Finally, somebody who shows you everything when teaching and goes slow! Thank you!
Hi I'm from USA and México, 67 years old learning guitar, love your lesson thank you.
hi dear
Travis picking was the first thing I learned when I started playing guitar. That said, I learned it using the thumb and three fingers, so I had to adjust my picking for some songs by leaving out the third finger. "4+20", for instance, is played with only the thumb and two fingers, while ""Guinevere" uses three fingers and thumb. This video is well done and explains it very well. Thanks.
I've played for decades, but never finger picking. This video just popped up. It's time!! Thanks.
I've been trying to master these patterns forever. True understanding come from your head. This video finally cracks my thick scull.
I must watch all of these instructional videos. His diction is so clear and explanations are easy to understand. Bravo!
You're the absolute best teacher...It makes such a difference providing the tab and keeping it simple. I really do appreciate it!
Excellent teaching! Thanks for the introduction to Travis style.
Another wonderful lesson. Simple, doesn't attempt too much in one session, short enough that we can view it over and over.
Glad you liked it, thanks so much! ::
AS a late starter (65!) and a retired elementary teacher, I appreciate a well laid out scope and sequence. Thanks for your brilliant breakdown. Just what I was looking for.
I am a late starter too. Better lat than never!
Great lesson. Concise, interesting, and thorough.
Just some absolutely beautiful soft picking. What a great instrument
Very clear, concise, and musical. Excellent lesson thank you!
I just want to thank you for this great tutorial. Wow, well done. Thank you, once again
I'm going to learn all 4 patterns, thank you for posting !!
Good stuff, man! I watch a lot of youtube, and I see a lot of guitar lessons, and I appreciate your approach. I really think the pinch pattern is the most versatile, although the descending arpeggio works well for gospel and hymns, which I play a fair amount of, as I play mainly at church. I like to use a combination of finger picking for intros, strumming for the main body of most of the contemporary worship songs that I play, and then sometimes a slower picking as a coda or outro to give the songs a more contemplative feel. I actually end up mostly playing a hybrid picking pattern, maintaining the root as the bass, outlining the chord with my other three fingers and incorporating elements of the melody. I'm always striving to get better, so I subscribed today. I see you've got a lot of great stuff! Oh, and thanks!
just started using your Chords with Color chart and it's amazing. I have never seen this type of resource and it's going to have a HUGE impact on my playing. Thanks!!!
Thanks Jared - Been wanting to get into this for ages. Your lesson has helped me break the ice. Here I go.
Finely!!, ive been looking for so long for someone who explains what youve actualy got to be doing, thanks sooo much!
Thank you very much Jared. A superb video and your chord chart is excellent and much appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Great lesson, congrats bro..great dynamics and teaching!
Fabulous teaching. Great helps. Best on CZcams. Learned much. Doable. Inspirational.....Mucho Gracias
My friend Jack, taught me one of the three, back in 1971. To say we mis-used that pattern would be an understatement. Thanks!
A super demonstration! Thanks!
Thank so much you are gifted. I will practice this.
Thanks. Working on developing my finger picking patterns and your video was just what I needed. Working on inside outside first.
Jared, thanks for making this video. Your a great teacher. I've been playing guitar for 3 years and am still learning. This lesson will help give me more more to learn.
I enjoyed your lesson. I like the "Inside-Out" pattern. First lesson on CZcams that I could actually sit through and not feel like I'm switching off. At the end of it I actually got it and know I will confidently practice them. You're really good and clear and bearable to watch. Some on CZcams are just too much. Thank you. May God bless you.
I must learn them all so starting with the first pattern. Thank you, Jared.
wonderfull lesson ,many thanks
Thank you Jared finally somebody shows me exactly how to do fingerstyle picking yay appreciate you
Great chord chart - really useful thanks!
Thanks Jared. Just starting to get into finger picking.... your approach is very inviting. God Bless!

Fantastic teacher here... beautiful video... thanks for sharing
Thanx a lot for this great lesson and the Chords - very helpfull!
Your are a great teacher sir, love your chord chart they're beautifully arranged at one place 🔥🔥✨💕
Descending arpeggio was my favourite, but I love them all. I knew basic Travis picking and will add all of this now. Thank you.
Excellent lesson, I thank you very much
Nice presentation! The complex distilled to simplicity. I plan to share this with my adult guitar class here in northern WI. Thanks!😊
Beautiful video and super well described and examples, can’t wait to give it a go!
Thanks, Stuart! I hope you enjoy given them a try :) Cheers -Jared
Great lesson! Thanks.
Great lesson, Jared. I taught myself the basic pinch pattern back in 1965 from listening to PP&M records and developed the rest on my own over the years. I've been asked to teach my style but I never really broke things down, I just play, often using a mixture of all 4 patterns and more, with variations, within the same chord progression. Your lesson is a great starting place that I will pass on to friends who want to learn Travis Picking.
A few years ago I tried to teach myself Skruggs style 5-string banjo. At first the rolls drove me nuts because they have a very different rhythmic feel and are kind of backwards from guitar (55+ years of muscle memory will do that to you). Although I never finished learning banjo, I incorporated aspects of banjo rolls into my Travis Picking to great effect.
Same story for me - just a couple years later than you started. I vividly remember sitting in the open door way of my cabin playing the pattern over and over until it became natural. I don't remember another thing about church camp that year. The PP&M song that hooked me on folk style acoustic guitar was the Ballad of Spring Hill on the LP A Song Will Rise. Bob Dylan's Free Wheelin' album was also a huge inspiration.
Thank you so much for the chart! It's awesome! Taking my playing to the next level. I liked and subscribed.
Thanks for your great amount of help we all appreciate it 👍
Happy to help, thanks for watching! :)
Very well presented. Thanks 👍
Thank you so much for your lessons! I love the way you teach. Im using the first Pattern that I will be performing in August and Singing!
Great lesson and as always you are great to follow and understand. This is really worth spending some time on the techniques, thanks for sharing Jared.
You're welcome, Stuart. Glad you liked this one, thanks! :) -Jared
This is the video where things are finally starting to click for me. Thank you so much!!! And, the Chords with Color chart is an amazing tool for changing a chord that sounds like it just needs something. My fav(s) are the inside/outside and the outside/inside. Have yet to play with the last two. Subscribed. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot, this is for me a new world to explore. Right now I'm starting to practice !! 🥳
I like the idea and the way you teach reading music I want to your channel you’re a good teacher we need more people like you on CZcams that are teachers and not showoffs I’ve been playing for many years since 1974 I’ve had my ups and downs with a guitar until I learn how to read music I am a finger style guitarist because I can’t sing so I play all the harmony and all the melody I guess my family thinks I’m a natural at it sometimes I don’t think so I still have troubles like every other guitarist music never ends always something new to learn thanks for your video you’re a beautiful teacher😁👍🏼😎🎸🎼🎶👍🏼
I tried learning fingerstyle to no avail, but your video gave me a break through. You really broke it down and made it easy. Thanks so much.
Thanks,very well explained
Thanks Jared, great lesson.

I am trying to learn Your style, it's going to take time,,
Thank you and stay safe.

Love this finger picking pattern video. Thanks
Hey, Jared. I've been struggling for days to come up with a fingerpicking riff for a song I'm writing and this lesson was an epiphany. Thanks for helping me come back to the basics. I gotta keep telling myself: Keep it simple, stupid. This lesson really was a huge help. My new favorite--the 3rd, pinch pattern. I always love your videos. Don't know why I haven't subscribed, but I just did. Bless you, man!

Very well done sir. Ive been playing since Johnson was president and you've explained Travis picking as well as it can be explained. Wonderful song to select for the example!
Lovely and easy
I like them all ❤… thanks!
Hello Jarred from Cairns in Tropical North Queensland Australia 🇦🇺. Many thanks for your helpful instruction. Much appreciated. I look forward to more of your videos.
My ultimate goal has been to play Fingerstyle guitar and to understand what I was doing beyond just memorizing songs so that I might be able to play any song I like with an appropriate Fingerstyle motif. I like all four patterns you've demonstrated in this video, favor the 2nd & 3rd patterns (pattern 3 minus that 8th note ~ the bounce). Thank for this lesson & the printed materials 👍🏾👍🏼🎯🤝🏼.
Thanks David! Glad you found this helpful. I have a few more fingerpicking lessons coming up over the new couple months too. I hope they all help with your ultimate goal. Cheers, -Jared
@@soundguitar Sir, did u use acoustic or classical guitar?

Thanks for the color guide, from the PH.

Nicely done. Thank you. Old Aussie man
