- Having trouble editing your Solar Eclipse shots?
Corona detail lost?
In this video, I dive deep into the post-processing techniques I used for my 2024 solar eclipse photographs taken in Story, Arkansas. I focus on two often overlooked tools in Adobe Camera Raw that proved crucial for enhancing the fine details of the solar corona in my images. Here’s what you can expect to learn:
1. Highlight Management: I'll show you how to finely balance the highlights to prevent overexposure while maintaining the intricate details of the solar corona.
2. Innovative Use of Color Grading: Interestingly, I use color grading tools not for adding colors but for adjusting the luminance of shadows, midtones, and highlights. This method allows for precise control over the tonal balance, which significantly enhances the visibility and detail of the eclipse without introducing unwanted color shifts.
3. Texture and Clarity Adjustments: I'll demonstrate how to use texture and clarity sliders judiciously to reveal more details in the corona without making the image look unnatural or overly processed.
4. Blending and Balancing Tones: I discuss how to effectively blend and balance these adjustments to ensure smooth transitions between different tonal areas and maintain a realistic contrast throughout the image.
Try these unorthodox tools in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom to bring out all that gorgeous coronal detail!

BTW nice video! Creative use of that module!
I appreciate it
I love it! Even without updates there are new ways to bring out the best in our shots. Thanks Blake!
😁 it's my pleasure.
Love it!
Thanks!!
@@f64Academy I'll be trying this with my collection of pics. Quite an amazing experience!
Blake the Mad PS Scientist strikes again! Well done sir! 😄
haha! I'll take it! It took me WAY too long to figure this one out, lol
Thanks! I am going to revisit my images immediately.
This is a powerful technique. Thanks for posting!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff! I use the luminance sliders in the Lr/ACR color grading section all the time.
I may need to start using it more. I think the highlights slider here is FANTASTIC for working with waterfalls. I discovered that after this video yesterday.
Awesome, going to try with Milky Way shot
That's a great idea, I'm interested in hearing how that goes.
I don't have any eclips shots but like at the end of your video, it makes me wonder what I can do with my landscape photos. Might not be a noticable difference than using other silders becuase landscape has so much more elements in the photo but it is worth giving it a try just to see what it will do.
I like that you are thinking that way! I have been experimenting with these sliders since this video on landscapes and I can confirm it offers some value, especially in clouds and waterfalls with the highlights slider, or opening up shadow detail without compromising the tonal structure of shadows. It is unique.
My hard drive crashed right in the middle of editing my eclipse photos. I will have to try this when I get back up running again. I wonder if this will also work with black and white photos. I've been doing a lot of street photography in b&w lately.
Sorry to hear that 😔
It will most certainly work with BW photos. It'll give you more leverage in those tonal values.
We are fortunate to have totality images. I have several from two cameras. I have been surprised that both LR Classic and PS will not HDR combine them, they refuse even though same lens mm, just different exposure. And of cours not in the exact spot in the frame as you have to move to track the earths and suns movement. I have gorgeous varying exposures of the red,,,,won't use the right word....eruptions from the sun and then brighter images like you have here. Any program you have found to combine and provide HDR or expanded dynamic range? I also considered stacking in PS and using masking to at least try that, But you don't get the expanded dynamic range. Perhaps it doesn't like that they are more than a few seconds apart?
I had the same problem, that's why I chose to do it this way and get as much out as I could.
@f64Academy Ahhhhh. Got it. Nice reults and live using the color grading for a little color and adjusting B&W. I will share that I saw a recommendation to someone on another thread elsewhere to use a planet stacker and they mentioned these: Sharpcap v4.1 , astrosurface and PIPP + Autostakkert + Registax
Know zero about these but may try.
I noticed that you changed order of tools in ACR. Could explain. Cause I changed when you said to changed.
I change them for the order on which I typically work.
@@f64Academy I know but, on vídeo that you teach why changed original setting, you set PROFILE First. And I remember you explain why.
