  • For three epic days each year, Florence's central square hosts an ancient sport where teams of men kick, punch and pummel their way to glory.
An early form of football, the official rules of calcio storico fiorentino were first written in 1580 by Count Giovanni de Bardi. Originally played for rich aristocrats, even popes were known to play calcio at times.
The field is a giant sandpit with a narrow slit of a goal running the width of each end, while twenty-seven players make up each team, and the ball can be hit with feet or hands. Fight tactics such as punching, elbowing and martial arts techniques are all allowed, but kicks to the head are forbidden, as are fights of two or more against one.
Calcio Storico's tournament is held the third week of June at the Piazza Santa Croce in the centre of Florence. Four teams representing the neighborhoods of Florence face each other in the semi-finals, with the winners going on to the final, played every year on June 24, the day of the patron saint of Florence, San Giovanni.

It's amazing looking at the passion in the eyes of these guys, giving all themeselves, fighting and risking their life for their history, for preserving their tradition. Fom c. 500 years every year in Florence this tradition is respected by all the cities. And believe me, I've seen this live, being in a cage for 50 minutes with 27 beasts in front of you ready to kick your ass is not easy, you've to proud, brave and a little bit crazy. They take no money for that, it's all about passion and traditions. RESPECT

This makes me look around here in America and ask myself what the fuck? People in Europe enjoy their lives, they eat, drink, dance, and love all with extreme passion! People over there are not bound to routines and work with no days off. People over there enjoy time off for leisure and to have fun with friends and family, Sports are a passion that not even the most die hard NFL fan can understand. We need to learn something from the Europeans on how not to be such an uptight country. The culture in Latin America is a lot like in Europe, except with less money and less white people, but the sentiment for culture and passion for family, friends, food and sports is the same. i wish the US was more like this.

+J Gamez I agree with you, I think the problem is that americans are very selfish and shallow, as well as very defensive and racist, together with isolation. They hate other races and they cannot stand anyone else, not even themselves. Plus, Americans are always living in terror, they had it coming for all the shit they have been doing.
Latin American and European countries are very open minded, they welcome everything that is different from them and are very friendly to everyone.

I love how you say "Americans" like all of us are the same. When you "think" of "americans" you think about the typical stereotype, you've never actually lived in a decent part where people are actually kind and talkative. Just like anywhere else there are those assholes Amurica just has more of them.

Whatever it is, its very cool. But remember that the Roman Empire itself was one huge melting pot. Britain was part of it ie. Hadrian's Wall. I've been a huge fan of Florence after reading "The Agony and Ecstasy" about Michaelangelo and the De Medici family when I was in high school. Never been to Florence but hope to visit one day. I'm in New Zealand now where rugby is king (See "All Blacks" videos. Rugby is similar to this calcio storico fiorentino but not as rough. But rugby is rougher than gridiron football in America in my estimation. I think this Florentine game would go over huge in New Zealand and America. I think its the future.

heheheheh I know you guys from rugby. I agree, the Celts and you guys have that fighting spirit in the DNA. You'd do well. Still, in town we hear of lots of boxers, rugby players and MMA fighters who don't have the guts to step into that arena. It's more regulated now (before no 1 on 1 only rule) but still. It's 50 minutes of 25 against 25 and when the refs are not looking, anything can happen. At least 3-4 end up in hospital and most require stitches and an X-ray after the game. Bear in mind that if you manage to put a player out of the game by causing injury, it's good as you have an extra player. No subs. You hear stories from the 70s 80s and 90s that give the chills. CZcams "calcio storico anni 80". Back then it was savage, today it's more civilized. My colour? Bianchiiiii! (Whites ;)

most comments says: it's a game for men and only brave men who have an iron balls.. and bla bla..
I say: this game for animals and only for animals, what is the result from this game!!?
broken legs & arms or heads..
can you build any morals or strength from it?
    absolutely not..
men have morals and mind to think and use.. but animals don't..

Well, the meaning is that it is resembling a very old war, happened in 1500 +/-. And Florence to show off the supremacy of its army decided to "play calcio storico" not caring of being attacked. That was a memorable victory for Florence and since then we every year remember it play a commemorative tournament.

Out of curiosity, how well did you know the game, its culture, the city, what it means to the Florentines, the origins, etc. before judging it?
