    Still holding out for my perfect release of Z. I want 4:3, film grain, Bruce faulconer tracks, and the original Toonami openings/ending themes. Feels like every release of Z I have to sacrifice something. The closest are the 3 episode singles but collecting them isn’t practical

      If you want that buy the original funimation sets from the ginyu saga to kid buu saga either on Vhs or DVD box sets that came out from 1999 to 2003. Then get dragon box for the sayian and namek sagas.

      I was with you until you said the butchered music tracks. I'm tired of nostalgia tards still wanting butchered releases. Give me completely untouched dragon ball with the original music and openings. Only alteration that's acceptable is dub options.

      @AE Pulsar Yeah, it's 100% authentic plus it includes the Japanese version for these Japanese fans out there wanting to watch JP DBZ in 4:3 subbed with the Kikuchi score of course. Though the Eng Dub doesn't include a JP option, so Faulconer only!
      There are 87 volumes of them. Quite a lot, seeing as it only has 3 or 4 episodes per volume. Dragon Ball and GT got a more convinient release, in that GT had the same 3 or 4 episodes per release, but only had 20 volumes because it was short and Dragon Ball got 2 discs per volume, with 6, 7 or even 8 episodes per disc, though the first 13 episodes have the Harmony Gold Dub (Plus Movie 1 in the first volume as a bonus!) and the Funimation Tournament Saga is expensive, 50 to 100 bucks! Though all that can be fixed by buying Season 1 of the Blue Bricks and then the rest the OG release, which has both the first 13 episode Funimation Dubbed and the entirety of the Tournament Saga too. (Still recommend you buy the OG release due to it not being Remastered, so no SFX are removed and the footage isn't slightly zoomed in, which it is with the Blue Bricks, so you miss all the sides a little bit, though hardly noticeable unlike the Orange Bricks and Blu-Rays cropping.)
      And the first 17 volumes were the first 53 episodes of the Ocean Dub, edited and everything. So no blood and signs of death. So basically the exact same as it aired it's rerun on Syndication.
      And the Singles even has the OG Funi Dub, exactly how it aired on Toonami, unlike other releases that are "remastered" or in other words butchered. The OG had SFX, no Digital Noise Removal, is in 4:3, etc.

    • @SavageBolt
      @SavageBolt Před 5 lety +7

      Yeah, I wish there were re-releases of the original Ocean/Funimation dubs that were originally shown on Toonami in the late 90s/early 2000s. Honestly, those dubs of DBZ to me feel like the definitive way to watch the anime, but those single releases of those dubs are really rare to come by, so not everyone can in on it. Recently I just completed collecting all the singles, either on VHS or DVD, I've also got the Rock the Dragon set. I just don't have much care for the dubs explained in the vid.

      Savage_Bolt in the UK, i had (after researching) Oceana initially going by the intro and intro songs, which ones i remember and which i didn't.
      Got the blu ray and was severely confused because the intro visual and song was entirely different but that's just how it was in the US i guess?
      Which means for us UK Cartoon Network'ers/Toonami guys, nostalgia is pretty much dead for us. Theres a Rock the Dragon set which only covers the first 2 series as far as i know. A lot to research in one day lol.

      Thanks to DVD Netflix, while not the best method, I was about to experience how the Single DVDs are. It was amazing being able to hear Rock the Dragon as that isn't the opening used in later releases. Such a shame there isn't really a convenient definitive way to experience this show legitimately. Seems like the best option is a combination of the Level Set Blu-rays with the Dragon Boxes. Too bad both are expensive...

  • @TheLAexplorer

    For anyone that watched DBZ in the mid 90s / early 2000s, the Pioneer release is almost always the definitive collection. Actually, I came across someone selling a box of 60 of them for only $60 on OfferUp. I drove down there asap to get 'em. Then I got the last remaining ones by winning some e-bay auctions - which were much more expensive. I think I ended up spending close to $300 to complete the set. But in my opinion, this was well worth it considering that the other mediocre releases are close to the same price. The Pioneer release has so much more charm. It's in the correct aspect ratio, it has the original voices, Shuki Levy's music, I love that you can see the film texture as opposed to the super smooth digitally remastered texture (or lack thereof), and lastly I love having the commercials for the old DBZ movie releases. Watching those before the show starts makes me feel like I traveled back in time to my childhood.

    The 2014 Blu-rays Seasons had a lot going for them, such as the cover art, slipcovers, fitting menu music, original Funimation voices and Bruce Faulconer's incredible score from the US broadcast. On the downside, they weren't rescans which lead to blurrier than desired lines similar other releases and the colours are blown out entirely so characters are ghost white. Admittedly at the time of release, the 16:9 'full screen' crop was appealing because younger me wanted to fill my TV screen fully, but I've come to really want the original 4:3 ratio to see the animations, framing and art direction as the artists intended.
    Hopefully they release a Blu-ray version with completely rescanned images in the 4:3 ratio with the option for Faulconer and OG dub.

    The Ultimate Uncut Special Edition singles 1-9, Dragon Box 1 and 2, then the remaining DVD singles from the Captain Ginyu Saga up to the Kid Buu Saga from the late 90's - early 2000's. The only thing you lose out on is the Nathan Johnson score for the later Saiyan and Namek sagas, but Nathan's score wasn't great in my opinion, so it's an acceptable sacrifice to get all of DBZ in full 4:3. If you don't care about the Nathan Johnson score at all then you can skip the Ultimate Uncut stuff since Dragon Box 1 which you need for episodes 28-42 has 1-27 anyway.

    Its actually a tough decision cause you are sacrificing something no matter what one you get. I'll probably go with the blu rays cause it still has brucd faulconer which is the most important part to me, dragon box is ridiculously priced, and the erased lines are gonna drive me nuts on the orange bricks. And then on the blu ray your still getting the cropped image and it has (to me personally) the least appealing design for the box and DVD covers, which of course isn't a huge deal but honestly 90% of the time your probably just gonna be looking at it on a shelf andI think orange bricks win that one. No matter what you do you are gonna be missing out on something and it's so ridiculous that we don't have one definitive set that makes everything else obsolete. It shouldn't be this complicated to just get some damn dragon ball in your life.

  • @MekanikKommandoh88

    I wish the DBZ Blu-Rays had the original aspect ratio, because that would be the preferred way to watch the Japanese dub at a reasonable price. Sucks that it’s so hard to find the perfect set, as Kai contains the only listenable English dub and keeps it 4:3, but obviously isn’t true to the original Japanese broadcast content wise (admittedly to the show’s benefit at times).
    I guess my take is this: if you don’t care about watching in Japanese and/or don’t want a cropped image, Kai is your only option. If you want to exclusively watch the Japanese dub and don’t want to track down the Dragon boxes, go with the DBZ Blu-Ray.

      Edgar flores the original funi dub is awful . Japanese and kai are so much better . Too bad you only watch a dumbed down kiddy version. The japanese version is the definitive version and the kai gohan actually emulates that performance . While the old one sounds raspy and unrealistic. @THX1999 Před 6 lety +3

      Edgar flores my personal preference is the original z in japanese with English subtitles . As for kai , its okay i guess . But the dub on it was much much better and more mature. I didnt really notice much blood bieng censored expect for when picolo hits son goku with a masenko. And when freeza attacks krillin . Also the remastered z dub is a convoluted mess and doesnt translate the japanese script at all . Inatead they made up a lot of dialouge. Its a bad dub. I mean sean and sabat have their moments and the Bruce Faulconer score has a few good tracks, but thats it.

    • @OWmyDragonballz
      @OWmyDragonballz Před 5 lety +8

      GhostlyOutcast the orange bricks are hot saturated garbage. They butchered the picture detail. The blu-rays are almost just as bad. The best sets are Kai. The Dragonbox and the level sets. The level sets were sadly cancelled because the remaster process was too expensive and they didn’t sell well due to market fatigue from their other crappy releases.

    • @OWmyDragonballz
      @OWmyDragonballz Před 5 lety +2

      GhostlyOutcast You obviously have no idea how the show was filmed or how it was meant to be originally.
      The orange bricks again are hot saturated garbage. They were falsely advertised on. Probably the biggest marketing scandal in FUNimation history. And those are nowhere near how the colors were intended.
      Saturating the picture bastardized the quality and original intent. The Blu-Rays were basically remastered orange bricks and made them a polished turd.
      This isn’t a matter of opinion. It’s objectively bad and not “better than nothing”.
      Not to mention cropping the imagine in 16:9 and chopping off 30-40% of the picture. It was so bad that moments with shaking caused details to miss on characters outlines and skin etc.
      grain is also apart of the picture and FUNimation removed it all with the blu-rays.
      The level sets were easily near-perfect in every way.
      As for your claim that the old dub was better than the Kai dub -
      “Just because I was in the original DBZ, doesn't mean I liked it or supported it artistically. We were all frustrated with the old powers that be at Funimation... We did the best we could with DBZ with some really really crappy decisions that were made by people, who in my opinion, not only had zero artistic talent and experience, were also trying to appease american audiences to make money..."
      Sean "THE MAN!" Schemmel!
      The actors at FUNimation had little to no acting experience and little to no knowledge of the series when they dubbed Z.
      With Kai they had 10 years and up of experience under heir belt. It was finally their opportunity to rewrite the show and do it justice to the original writers intent. The voice acting. Quality and overall artistic value is superior in every way in Kai.
      It’s a manga faithful version that cuts out most of the filler. The characters are fixed. More suitable voice replacements. Chris Ayers Freeza blows granny Freeza away.
      Gohan finally sounds like a little kid instead of a chain smoking teenager. I could go on.

    • @TheTundraTerror
      @TheTundraTerror Před 5 lety +3

      No, the Orange Bricks are not better than nothing. They are worse than nothing because it gave Funimation the (entirely wrong) impression that people hate film grain instead of the (correct) impression that people will buy a complete home release that is affordable. So, now Funimation runs the episodes through a fucking algorithm to remove the film grain before oversaturating the hell out of the colors.
