Love it! Well said Simon. In an age where anyone can pick up a camera, those who can elicit a connection with an audience and build a sense of community will do well ;)
D4Darious *evil laugh* hahaha ;)
DSLRguide D4Darious Oh gosh! Two great artists from different continents, watching each other's channel! I love how technology allows this kind of stuff. You're awesome! Both of you...
InCamera Stuff Thank you InCamera =)
Nicely put. Stories have been around since the beginning of time, despite changing mediums used to tell them.
thefrugalfilmmaker Good to see you here.
Precisely Simon. 1. Tell a story, 2. Deliver it to an audience. Repeat 1 and 2. :)
***** Which epiphany? I have them daily. :)
Found your videos a couple of days ago and I've been hardly getting any sleep from watching them all. So inspiring and refreshing to watch!
The pacing of this video is actually perfect. It's fast but understandable. And the sound design is fantastic. Great video!
Tom J i completely agree
I don't think it will ever take away the art of creating films, technology cannot replace talent or vast knowledge of film making.
Funny.. the same thing is happening to our photography world. Yes it's true that it is more difficult to convince people that they need a pro photographer, but at the end of the day what really makes the difference is not the light or camera but our knowledge how to capture real emotions.
Very true because what art is is making people feel with what you captured.
So true. I met a photographer at my friend's wedding recently, he was a scruffy bloke with a confident attitude, carried only two lenses around in his pocket and he said that he backed him self every time to get good shots and not worry about people buying slick new cameras and competing with him. He came highly recommended and what I've seen it was right.
Hi Simon. I'm really into filmmaking and I recently found your channel. I'm getting ready to shoot a short film and I just wanted to let you know that your videos are really helpful and enjoyable. Keep doing what you're doing. You'll be really successful one day.
thanks ThePosterPig!
Very true, it often annoys me as well to put so much time and effort into something that is visually appealing when someone shoots something that looks like it was filmed with a toaster and gets 10x the views, attention than that of something well polished and cohesive. I guess it is just the age we live in and the term "The best camera is the one you have with you" rings ever so true.
Really interesting video. The pace was great and the little drawings were really useful. Keep up the great work.
Aidan B glad you liked it, cheers Aidan!
DSLRguide Keep up the great work. Your vids are very good.
Don't worry!
I believe in making good quality films.
Good quality films with high production value will last forever.
Vines, snapchat are just current trends. I reckon it will not last long.
I believe in making high quality inspirational content. Not using sexual attraction and cheap punchlines to appeal the audience.
I believe in high production value!
If anything I'm excited for the future of filmmaking, we're stepping away from the mainstream conventional blockbuster approach and entering a new generation in which almost anyone can produce content, allowing more room for creative freedom and ultimately valuable original ideas. Of course there is and will continue to be an over saturation of amateur films, however I believe creative / unique concepts will stand out above all else. Really enjoyed this video man, keep up the good work as always
I love your videos! Keep up the good work, I'm so hyped because soon I will get my first DSLR and equipment, thank you for everything, you helped me really much with your videos! You're amazing!
I've been studying filmmaking the last 8 month and your channel is one of the best so far. Keep it up!!
As always, very interesting and informative video Simon! I agree - stories have been around for so long, and so many mediums were invented to share them, that no matter how easy it is, the good movies are the ones that have a strong story.
your progress and videos have taught me so much about storytelling and filming. my journey feels like it's just begun (again). keep up the hard work!
The day I win the Oscar, I'll definitely mention your name to thank you as I have learnt a lot from you. Thanks a ton Simon.
yeah i agree that Content is important too. I think some people just find that it's kind of impressive when they can work the camera, lightings, and the quality of the video .
Favorite part of these videos- eating the apple
There is no way Photographers/Filmmakers will ever cease to exist, Biggest reason is that iPhoners can't capture/edit the way Professionals do, It's like saying Chef's will cease to exist because their grill is becoming more advanced, The grill isn't the most important part, The Chef is, Same thing with Filmmakers and Photographers, Of course gear has a big portion of the cut in it but there is no way the industry till go defunct.
Because of inprovement in consumer cameras...
I'm loosing interest in Photography &
People who are in short scale film making .. can't earn enough money to make a living out of it...
Theres the Apple!
Very insightful, Simon! Goes to show mediums don't limit how you convey your message.
The iconic apple...
Smart thinking from someone so young. Great channel.
We agree that its one of the best times to be a filmmaker, with the cost of entry getting cheaper and cheaper and some of the barriers starting to disappear.
Technology can't replace everything though, as you concluded. Great filmmaking still takes skill and training.
Great video and nice way of putting it! Loved it... I was thinking the exact same thing as you and when I saw this video I was like "wow. It's on words... Amazing."
I was just having a similar discussion with friends who were fascinated with the emergence of numerous people making sketch comedy with their phones. The medium which we receive/view content will constantly evolve, but the creativity and ability to produce engaging content or stories will always be a deciding factor.
You killed my inspiration for film making about halfway through the video then at the end inspired me to do morel
Great video
Kinda like a weird movie
too true, after trying for a slider shoot to match my movement for the fifth time I wonder if talking bollocks to a camera I am holding on a stick is the answer as well. But it is all about the story, thanks
Content is the key factor .that's why we are still watching chaplin and de sica with prime interest ..technology always comes second .good one Simon ..lol!
so good Simon, those speeches you give touches themes and questions that are very worth thinking... keep up with the good work! i'm a big fan and admirer of yours
Love your channel. Subscribed and have been watching your videos all night!
You're helping a lot a brazilian aspiring filmmaker! Thanks for your videos, dude!
The overlay thingie at 0:32 is amazing just watched it 5 times
Just discovered this channel! I love it. I was 17 ten years ago, and I remember the internet wasn't quite fast enough for music and video yet, but I was experimenting with photography, shooting and editing video, animation and graphic design. It's become so much easier and less expensive to "do it yourself" but at the same time, I invested so much time and money hoping I would make a career of it, but now it seems like EVERYONE can do it. I feel like I've already fallen behind and I can't keep up @_@
Simon, I cannot thank you enough. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. By watching your videos, I have learned to waste less time watching reviews of the latest piece of gear that I wish I could buy and started spending more time on content and things that matter. I believe we are the same age, so in all honesty, I am a little jealous of your work ethic, which is good because it makes me work a lot harder haha :) Can't wait to see what comes next!
As a new DSLR user, your videos help me a lot with my footage.
Thanks Simon
I agree! As a film maker I have been using the "point shoot" technique for the last several years. For me it is all about the story and the acting(I'm an actress and a writer). I only use the equipment that is absolutely necessary to tell my story as quickly as possible. I am excited for all the affordable top quality cameras that will be coming.
I've really been loving your recent videos. I've realized the world beyond new gear and production value and changed my focus to content and creativity. I really feel like this was important to learn for me to move on in my video career. Thanks for the great videos, Simon. Keep up the great work
***** so glad to hear this! Content + creativitity > gear + production value. You're welcome!
Amazing content, love your viewpoints. Totally agree. Awesome video Simon.
The limiting factor is certainly not the equipment. There are two limiting factors: The script and distribution. Most people have absolutely nothing interesting to say and/or won't be distributed. Those are today the two big problems.
This is almost like the same conversation that going on with blogs. The debate between long reads or quick reads. Cheers, Simon.
this format is so much nicer than the old videos, good stuff :)
well done for thinking ahead, and thinking practically about the future of film. I commend you on your attitude toward it all because you are right, money is not a hindrance to making films. It all starts with the concept. Thank you for this channel, it's refreshing and I like watching you grow as a person and filmmaker
Nadine Chamas thanks Nadine!
I was almost fearful that the apple would not appear. Great signature this. Love it.
Things are getting easier, a good example is color grading. The new Premiere Pro CC 2015 has a powerful lumetri color grading engine. The panel looks similar to Lightroom, it has the curves like Lightroom, but it has things for video like LUTS and color wheels as well. People are not pro colorist can get results that they couldn't get before. Final Cut Pro has not caught up with this. The new Premiere has a 30 day free trial, you'll see what I mean. It's amazing. As far as cameras, phones now already have 4k. Some of them shoot raw and have manual settings. But as that stuff will be in our phones one day, the pro gear will be more of the best of whatever is happening then. Also, so far, there isn't any real way to create the DOF you get with a 35mm full frame sensor or an APS-C sensor like in the T3i in a small sensor. There is one attempt at it for micro 4/3 cameras, which makes it look as if it's a bigger sensor. Bigger sensors have more detail, obviously they can get more light. If a cell phone camera ended up being able to do low light as well as a DSLR, then the DSLR's would then be able to do even more extreme low light. Shallow depth of field is one of the reasons I use a full frame DSLR along with my video camera. It will be a while before they figure that out.
This is so great! Nice talk Simon !
I discovered your channel today and I'm surprised, that you only have 60'000 subs. You have a nice quality and you're doing absolutely good videos for learning filmmaking. Thanks for you videos! You have my sub!
zischler that means a lot, thanks for the encouragement!
yes thank you! I've been asking myself this question without a hopeful answer. but you are right, the only real thing that matters today will matter tomorrow. well done! and thanks!
Man, I'm loving your content. Way to go, congrats :)
Isa Villar thanks Isa!
Dude you are killin' it. Subscribed.
thanks Stetson Doggett!

Soo good! Love this video dude
Another great video! Good info here. I shoot 100% of my video with a mobile phone. Even do some of the editing on it. My "production" quality is almost non-existent but I'm hopefully getting better.
!!! This got me so excited about the future of video.
Exactly, pushing whatever vibes you want to give off , will always set you apart if the audience is receiving
Thank you sir, for expressing this (video upload) message about motion picture production (nod and wink to Art),and bless you for your passion! You are saying very much of what I was looking to say about methods of content creation during the present day and the future of it. Also to mention the knowledge of photography and the craft that goes with it is important. Keep up the good work!
man i love your videos!! i see the quality of your videos is increasing day by day! kudos!
***** thanks Kunal!
Congratulations for 700k subscribers!!! :)
What I get concerned about sometimes is the realization of how many people are trying to pursue film. I don't know why it bothers me I think it just makes me nervous for standing apart and finding jobs when there is so many of us.
Preston Taylor absolutely. It's hard not to see it as a competition, always knowing that someone out there is working hard than us..
That very concern steered me away from pursuing filmmaking for a while but then I came across an article about how successful people don't have a "plan b". It said that when you want something you work hard and make it happen. Its easier said than done but perseverance is the key to success. This really spoke to me. Here's the article if you want to read it. It's a bit lengthy but its worth the read. m.fastcompany.com/3046338/my-creative-life/anderson-cooper-why-no-plan-b-is-the-only-plan
Although it raises the competition I'm glad more people are trying to pursue film because it means people are not forgetting it and are becoming more interested in the art and craft, we can have more visions which is nice.
It's also worth noting that if it's a story worth telling, it's a story worth collaborating on. The more people there are, sure the more bloated the industry may seem, but there's just that many more people who would lend a hand to boom op for you next Saturday, or for you to boom op for.
Ikr sometimes I get nervous bc everyone is learning how to edit and everything just for make up and youtube and everyone's so educated on it I'm scared I won't be able to find a job in the future:/ (Very happy for them though)
Great Video! :) Found your channel yesterday more or less random on CZcams, and you're already one of my favorite people to watch! :)
Keep up the Great work!
Christian Klöckner thanks Christian, that means a lot!
this is my favorite video youve made yet, great job
Austin thanks Austin!
Always with the apple!!! haha. Great vid once again! Thanks for all the advice!
+DJ REIVO no problem :)
It still pisses me off that newspapers use the shots from other people's cell phones and many of them don't even capture it well. That, and those pro photographers who spend their time to capture the stories and working hard for every dime that they own. Yet, they're loosing their jobs to people with cellphones, really!?! It's stupid.
Really awesome video. Really really well constructed.
I love your work! Extremely well spoken and informative.
John Bechtold thanks John!
I've watched practically all of your videos in the last two weeks. Soon enough, I will have my own show on my youtube channel. I'll come back to show you what your advice has helped me make. Btw, I've watched Film Riot for years and love them. But I have to say, your channel is much more helpful. They are too specific and comedic whilst you are more basic and understandable. Thanks for all of your help, Simon!
Jonathan Rojo why thank you Jonathan! Really means a lot to hear your encouragement.
What great ideas you have!
+Paulo Nideck thanks Paulo!
DSLRguide The future is now my freind! 👍😀😉😎 🎥---->📱
your inspiring! and i totally agree with what you've said.
I can't get over how inspiring you are!!!!!!!!!!
Great video! Really made me think! That's what I want my films to do, make people think.
itsnikobro thanks Niko! definitely - I just watched Ex Machina, and then definitely made me think...
While I do believe you are correct, that the story is king, I think you're overlooking an important aspect here. Movies tell stories in a way that most amateurs don't, they tell the story through the imagery and cinematography. A bystander can snap the decisive moment, but typically he doesn't capture a stunning image. There is a craft to what photographers and filmmakers do and it tells stories in way that youtube content and even a lot of tv series don't.
Ask yourself was the last time you were captivated by a youtube video to the degree that you couldn't bear to divert your eyes, when did it inspire you to create worlds in your mind. I'm sure they can but youtube videos typically don't.
There are the masters who can still make me want go to the cinema and see there movies there. Be it Kurosawa, Tarantino or Terry Gilliam, their work appeals with than just auditory storytelling, it is cineastic storytelling.
Totally true my man. Thanks!
Very nice video simon, keep it up :D
i've been doing vines every day now cause it's a whole lot easier to do with just one or two people
I am a photographer/filmmaker and feel like things are moving so fast in the industry. Values of yesteryear are being ignored, frowned upon and trampled all over. I suppose the way forward is to embrace it and go with the punches. Narrative is key to success.
I love the apple in the end! :D
The porn industry has been using cheap camcorders for years and they've consistently been evoking emotions from viewers.
Moral of the story: Content is king.
Tell a story that people want to experience, and everything else is irrelevant.
Well done, Simon.
You couldn't be more right. Content is king. Since somebody was able to shoot a movie with three Iphones and have it released for theater distribution forget spending money on a Sony FS7 or even on a Black Magic Cam if you are totally unknown and don't have a secure distribution deal in place and no money. All you need is a Samsung NX500, a LX100 and you are really all set. If you want to break the bank get a GH4 but basically it's now overkill. Nobody who watched Tangerine in theaters complained about the videograhy, nobody. All the complaints I heard were about the story, either people couldn't relate to it or didn't care, etc... Dynamic range is something camera geeks care about, not the audience.
Simon, you hit on the one thing that does not change in all creative professions-the idea. All of us who've been around for a while have seen our careers evolve dramatically. But the ability to be original, genuine, and intriguing never changes. Keep sharing your wisdom.
DSLRguide said, "Production value is no longer the limiting factor." Wow! That smacked me between the eyes. I've been working to improve my production values when "it's how you can make an audience feel." (Well, proper lighting can influence how an audience feels about your scene, but it's not the only factor. "The Lean Forward Moment" by Norman Hollyn really showed me some of the ways great directors did this.)
Bravo! Great post. I see I need to think differently about what I'm trying to do.
Robert Shaver really glad to hear this Robert, it's something we all need to remind ourselves constantly.
seu canal é incrível, compartilha um grande conteúdo, obrigado pela sua dedicação e tempo gastos nisso!
George Lucas said that in the future everyone will be filmmakers!
You are awesome and your work is first class. QED.
Great job!
You're on the right track!
oooh Jack and Jones Jumper, Nice. also, great video
Wow man this is true and you deserv more subs man! :) UR VIDEOS I SO FRAKING COOL! :D
Your right Simon consumer cameras will probably eventually catch up with some cinema cameras although camera movement and every other aspect of filmmaking will rely on creativity as a filmmaker and that's the most important. not just the way the film is made :)
great video, totally agree
The thumnail is amazing!
I am only 12,and your videos really prepare me for the Future. Do more videos soon your channel will grow bigger.
Thanks, I agree. Content plays a huge part of success. Can you do a video on how to draw in your videos. I love the sketches you use to help explain your point and bring the words to life.
DesTheFashionEater You're welcome! Sure, I'll cover it in a few weeks :)
Thanks! You’re so helpful. Have a great break/vacation lol :)!!
Could it be I'm finally getting the apple bite references made in your other showcase video (on your cadevisuals channel)? ;-)
Simon I'm gonna be honest no matter how good with lighting or sound you are it comes to the storytelling and I think you should work on storytelling
Hi Simon. You are making such good points in this video! Thanks for your time making this. I'm not worried that more and more people pursue filmmaking and that it's getting harder to stand out from the crowd. I only hope great stories continue to be told and prevail over sexual content and silly pranks, and that people nurture the art of film with genuine passion.
Vlad Dimov Although there's a trend for short form, casual content that doesn't seem to be 'crafted' the best movies, I'm pretty sure those people are just leaving plenty of space for those who want to make the more artistic kind of films.
DSLRguide Yes, I agree with your optimistic perspective and I look forward to seeing more of your inspiring educational content!
I love your videos dude.
Hi Simon. I really want to make films and I've got all the cameras and gear but the desktop computer that I have can't edit video. I also don't have Adobe Premire or any other video editing software. Got any ideas on what I should do?
Great video! Keep it up!
No not 2 weeks I can barely wait one week
That is really an interesting topic. I thinks its awesome that more and more people have the chance of showing their creativity to the world without having to spend thousands of dollars on something now you can get under 100. My dad shot videos with a thing that nothing good as much as a dslr could do, but now consumers are lucky that they can shot 4k. If I watch a film that has bad quality but an interesting story, that's way better than a person that paid lots of money and a poor story. :)
you have made my life so better
