  • Brownells new product team leader Paul Levy kicks off today's rundown with the Solus Bravo bolt action rifle from Aero Precision. This latest rifle in the Solus line comes with a KRG stock and is available chambered in .308 Winchester, 6mm Creedmoor, or 6.5 Creedmoor. It has a Ballistic Advantage barrel with a threaded muzzle (thread protector included), but the rest of the action is made entirely IN-HOUSE by Aero Precision. The Solus uses AICS-pattern magazines and comes with one 5-round Magpul 7.62 AC PMAG. An ambidextrous magazine release at the front of the triggerguard is easy to operate. The trigger itself has virtually no creep and a very crisp release. Out of the box, you can expect your Solus rifle to shoot 1/2" to 3/4" groups.
    Like a lot of new bolt action platforms, the Solus is compatible with Remington 700 stocks and triggers, so if you want to make upgrades in the future, you have many options. Or maybe you want to build your own custom rifle? You can get Solus barreled actions or even just the action alone for custom builds. If you go that route, Aero Precision offers Solus-specific tools, including an Action Wrench, a Barrel Nut Wrench, and a set of Solus Vise Jaws made of non-marring polymer to secure the action in your bench vise while you work on it.
    For AR-15 builders, Bravo Company's Complete AR-15 Lower Receivers now come with their Mk 2 RMS. The proprietary Recoil Mitigation System reduces felt recoil to make your rifle a whole lot more comfortable to shoot without sacrificing reliability. The RMS's longer recoil buffer and longer receiver extension (buffer tube) reduce bolt bounce AND produce more consistent carrier velocity to smooth out the recoil impulse. These extremely well-built lower receivers come with Bravo Company's own BCM pistol grip and SOPMOD stock.
    As long as you're building a new rifle, why not top it with a state-of-the-art optic? Swampfox's Warhawk Tactical 2-10x44mm rifle scope Sharpshooter illuminated ranging reticle enables you to estimate the range to the target and use the holdover aiming cues to hit it without touching the elevation turret. The Warhawk comes with a ton of popular features, including an FFP (front focal plane) reticle, 34mm tube, fast-focus eyepiece, zero-resettable locking turrets, side-mounted parallax adjustment and reticle brightness control knobs.

    theyve had the mk.2 for a while. its basically BCMs A5 system. mid size buffer, rifle length spring, slightly longer tube... ive used mk.2 buffer tubes with vltor a5 buffers and vice versa. they're the same size tubes but their buffer weights are slightly different in weight. only by a few ounces tho do i dont even think the differences are noticeable.

      Well presently in WA we have serious industry impacting illegal laws affecting them. Example im near 3 months waiting for a holster from Opticsplanet. Because my order is in a conformance review process. As far as Aero Precision goes depending on warranty need/issue. Might be tied up in a process restriction like Opticsplanet.

      You don't even need to buy a billet lower if you want an ambi bolt catch, if that's what you mean - just get a PDQ lever. A little milling, and you can make literally any lower full ambi.

    • @gOnz3r
      @gOnz3r Před rokem

      Yep. Absolutely. The most I'd spend on a basic bitch lower is whatever the current best price is for a full-auto pocket cut, not that I plan to drill any holes.
      And I'd also say to lefties- Really look at the controls and imagine yourself holding the rifle before you buy an ambidextrous lower. My first AR had an ambidextrous lower with a PDQ lever, but after that, never again. Why? Well, all lowers are ambidextrous as far as the safety lever. The vast majority of lowers can take an ambidextrous magazine catch/release, which ambidextrous lowers use anyways. It really comes down to the bolt catch release, which if you are left-handed, you can just poke with the index finger of your left hand the instant your magazine is set. Frankly, to me, that is better than having to hit it with my off-hand by taking it off the handguard or magazine.

    Why are bolt-action more accurate than, say, an AR-10? (Might be a good Smithbusters question?)

    • @wolfgang_h3t
      @wolfgang_h3t Před rokem +1

      They're more consistent, no gas system and automatically cycling bolt that's ever so slightly messing with the harmonics, and usually they have insanely soft triggers that'd arguably be dangerous on an autoloader

    • @bruinflight1
      @bruinflight1 Před rokem

      @@wolfgang_h3t I could definitely see vibrations being detrimental in your first point if rapid firing, but, from a noob's perspective (I'm a noob) I can't see human cycling of the bolt being more consistent than mechanized cycles (given that your gas system is tuned whether piston or impingement). I was thinking the solidness of the locked-down bolt action receiver gives some more stability as the bullet travels down the barrel over a gas-cycling bolt? Maybe that's what you were saying about harmonics then? I've seen a lot of reviews about soft triggers for AR platforms but, again I'm a noob and haven't tried them out, maybe bolt-action are lighter yet?
      Thank you for your time responding, see ya at the range!

    • @wolfgang_h3t
      @wolfgang_h3t Před rokem +2

      @@bruinflight1 I'm not terribly knowledgeable on accuracy either, but generally speaking every teeny tiny bit helps. Hell, some folks thermal fit their receiver and barrel on ARs to improve accuracy. I believe it has to do with the bolt on a bolty staying complete locked shut through the firing process, vs a gas gun where there's micro adjustments from the gas system being pressurized, things starting to ever so slightly move as the bullet departs, things you'd think make minimal difference but surprisingly do

      Here's my explanation as to why Aero Precision has poor customer service...
      One of the worst customer service I've ever experienced from a firearms (and parts) manufacturer when dealing with their faulty part they manufactured.
      While putting my purchased Aero Precision EPC-9 together I noticed the buffer retainer was damaged and this buffer retainer is under the receiver extension and holds the buffer and buffer spring in when the upper and lower are separated.
      Each time I call them I'm on hold for over an hour...very frustrating.
      When I contacted the Aero Precision customer service about their defective part they told me they would get to my complaint in 6 to 8 weeks!!!! This is unacceptable and unreasonable...so, I'll have an expensive paperweight for at least 6 to 8 weeks? The customer service representative didn't even offer me any options, like ship the defective part back to them and they'll ship me a new part.

    • @Pyreleaf

      @@ucanon2662 they told me the same thing, but actually got back to me inside of one week. I'm not sure if it's because I followed up my email with a phone call, or maybe because I was friendly and polite with their customer service reps. Bolt Actions are like modern pickup trucks.
    They are both _grossly_ overpriced for their intended purpose.
    FWIW, I was inducted into the One Mile Club at Gunsite Academy using two different Remington 700 bolt actions (.300 Win Mag & .308 Winchester) and neither of them were adorned with these new "prerequisites" for precision rifle marksmanship. Meaning they did not have some fancy chassis, threaded barrel, or some enhanced nano-molecular precision bolt-action and so forth.
    Seems like everyone these days has fallen for the hype. They [the public] seem to think you need all these prerequisites in order to be truly considered a Precision Rifle Shooter. Even when I was at the Camp Perry Matches (back in the day), you simply did not see these hyper-focused, purpose-driven bolt actions.
    _"Beware of the man with one gun. For he can probably use it."_ *~Col. Jeff Cooper*
    I am willing to bet that "one gun" was probably a standard bolt action with iron *sights and an optic. After all, the Colonel was fond of the Scout Rifle concept but I digress.
    Although to be fair, I do think that SOLUS rifle is the better (maybe even best) option versus the myriad of contenders currently available on the market. It certainly took Aero Precision long enough to get this project started and more importantly • _functional._
    Great review nevertheless Pauly-V.

      Stripped 700 actions and clones are just expensive these days. Remington went bankrupt, the supply dried up overnight, and prices shot to the moon. These days you're looking at $500-600 just for a Remington action. You may as well pay the $200 or so extra and get the Solus because it's significantly improved. And the Solus is still the cheapest of the improved 700 clones.
