I'm surprised! Back in 2012, I rode the train and sang this whole song, out loud, in our coach car, at the beginning of the journey. I sang it from my seat (I was too shy to go up in front of the whole car and sing it. I think everybody would be too shy do it also). I didn't have a lyric sheet with me nor a phone to look up the lyrics of the song. I did it completely from memory. Fast forward 5 years and I'm having trouble getting past the second verse of the song. HOW DID MY 8 YEAR OLD MIND MANAGE TO GET THIS WHOLE SONG MEMORIZED AND HAVE THE GUTS TO SING IT OUT LOUD WHILE 30 OTHER STRANGERS LISTEN TO ME!?!?!?
Ah bother, it would've made a hell of a ride to such a thing happening: Sitting in the coach, hearing someone hum or silently sing the song to themself, then just sing along and rise your voice in order for him/her to notice that it is okay to sing along. Heck, would probably motivate others on board to join in as well, and before you know it, the whole carriage would sing through the ride!
Heard the song on the C.W. McCall Album along/w "Convoy". In 1998, my wife and I went to Durango for the express purpose of riding 'The Silverton'. We rode in the parlor car...it was worth the extra expense. This video is superb. In August of 2001, we returned to Durango and though we didn't ride the Silverton that time, we got some pics for posterity. Then we drove on to Ouray to have a look at Kuboske's U-Drive-'Em, locale for "Black Bear Road". Epic adventures in Colorado!
Absolutely Perfect. I first heard this song in the 1970's when my parents got a CW Mcall 8track.. I allways loved the song and often thought how a video should look.. You did it! One of my new favorites
I live here! My family has been farming and ranching here for more than 5 generations! I can honestly say that we take the train and all of the beauty of this area for granted! I do LOVE the train though!!!!
I’ve got a real honest confession to tell you guys I’m actually wrote those trains as a kid I had a blast at my childhood it was fun I was like 12 years old whenever I rode my first train I was on vacation it was just my grandparents and my little brother and my cousin over there in Durango Colorado I went during 2001 to Durango Colorado man that brings back some old memories maybe one day I’ll go down there and ride it again but this time I am already in adult and I may just go just for the scenery probably the reminisce on old memories
Wonderful! I got to work in the area, all around the train, as a geologist in the mountains, back in 1976, looking down on the train! Brings back great memories!!
Man this brings back memories. In the 90s I worked at a bar across from the Durango station. We used to get slammed when that train would get back from Silverton!
Love it! I drove from Durango to Silverton years ago. Couldn't get my wife to ride the train. Must of been that line in the song "You're gonna get a shiver when you check out the river..." We stopped at an overpass and waited for the train to pass while I played the song on a boombox. My wife thought I was nuts, but I loved it. I want to go back there and your video takes me back.
Well i can say im hooked. It was because of this video that i decided to find out more about k-36 480, and now i can anwser almost any question about it. thanks!
Ab fab!!! This is the perfect starting point for a Durango and Silverton Railway ad; Bill Fries nailed the run in a nutshell for the songwork (two decades of advertising experience helps). ;-)
What great memories this brought back for me. I was on the phone talking to a client and found out while she grew up skiing in Durango she had never heard C.W. McCall's song Silverton Train! What?? I sent her the link! When I was a kid, somewhere between 10 & 12, my sister and cousins rode this along with our parents. We sang the Silverton Train song almost the whole time we were on the train! Great memories. Thanks for making such a great video. You obviously have a passion for trains!
I heard this song preformed live at Opening Day to Silverton (Hotdog Day) 2013 outside the depot. The General Palmer and Silver Vista were nearby on display (my family would ride the silver vista the next day, for the first train to Silverton.
This video reminded me of a cable TV channel (Travel Channel I believe) show about the Durango & Silverton Railroad and the Silverton Train. It was narrated by C.W. McCall and features the "Silverton Train" song at the end. The near half-hour video depicted a ride on the train. Someone videotaped it and gave me a copy. Showed it a few times and I love it. It is on my bucket list to visit Durango and ride the train. We'll see. Stay safe and healthy.
What I know about this is that The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gage Railroad is based on this wonderful oldie but goodie! If I happen to ride on the silverton someday, I will have the song playing in my head the entire ride!
You did a fantastic job on this. That is an awesome ride!!! I much prefer the train to the road..After hearing the song for years ( Thanks Bill!).I finally realized my dream of riding the train. ( Sang the song the whole way) Awesome !!
wow! very nice!! loved the song since i was 8(now 43) never seen the train i always wanted to ride.. this train runs on H with a lot of O2 :) [and some coal..] thx!!!!
I had this on an album called convoy, had this , convoy, old home till her up, won't be no country music etc..wish I still had it, is it on here anywhere?? Help
i love this song!!!!!!!! she drank a whole lot of water and ate alot of coal! i tell my freinds at school ive got an 800ibs girl freind. shes my clubs live steam engine i drive alot haha
If you could find a 35 to 50 ton loco in decent shape, you MIGHT be able to swap for the 464. The 464 would have to be converted back to superheat to be able to handle the trains on D&SNG. The 75 ton Porter 6-axle diesel built for US Gypsum operation at Plaster City, CA would be a good backup or work loco for D&SNG or C&TS. But it has a broken piston rod and a cooling water leak.
"Silverton Train" indeed! I love this song. The backup singers (the ladies you hear singing the chorus) are a tad unintelligible, but I like it nonetheless. Also, C.W. McCall has another song, "Gallopin' Goose", that would go excellent with videos of the Rio Grande's "rail-buses" and "rail-trucks" which are known as the "Galloping Geese of the Rio Grande"!
+Kerry Freeman Several of the Galloping Geese still exist and are used all over the country. I think there are a couple of them out at Knott's Berry Farm in California. Finally, at approximately 2:16 old tech meets new, as the steam train passes a modern piece of Maintenance of Way equipment, in the form of a Speeder, which is a small self-propelled railcar for up to two people, and is powered by either an electric or diesel motor. P.S.: Early in my life one of my favorite songs was "Down by the Station" and I see that song had a clear impact on the early part of the 3rd verse of this song.
+Kerry Freeman The Galloping Geese are motorcars from the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. And there are some in operation at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.
Andrew Crumb My mistake, then. (I don't know why I mistook the Rio Grande for the Durango and Silverton. Probably due to the similar lettering/numbering/color scheme.)
@@TheOneTrueDragonKing If it's any consolation, the D&RGW leased the Rio Grande Southern briefly before its demise. And those background singers also can be heard on "Wolf Creek Pass", "Convoy", & "There Won't Be No Country Music (There Won't Be No Rock & Roll), and maybe a few other songs I've forgotten about. Stay safe and healthy.
@skybluedragonator I finally found what I was looking for in my "Cinders & Smoke" book. Yeah, 480 was dead when D&S bought the Silverton Branch. It was stored in Alamosa and trucked to Durango over Wolf Creek Pass. So, that would have been the time frame.
Great video! It looks like 480 has been rescued from her death bed. The last I heard was that she was in horrible shape. The scenery along the D&SNGRR is definitely more spectacular, but I think I prefer riding the Cumbres & Toltec as it is more rustic; so I think it gives a better taste of what riding the railroad "back then" was like. Also, the scenery varies more. Again, great video!
This is a great song for the Durango & Silverton train and I sincerely hope it'll be around for many more years to come
Me too!
Thanks everyone for all the compliments.
1:56 a Dodge Durango driving over the tracks...timing couldn't be more perfect.
Ha! Good call! I went back and watched, and the way it's edited, I think he definitely put it in there on purpose. :)
484berkshire lelelellele
I always thought of a Dodge Durango in Durango to be honest every time I think of it I laugh.
I never get tired of this song I’m enjoying and loving it at the same time because of the k480 whistle.
considering its a K-36, pretty cool
I'm surprised! Back in 2012, I rode the train and sang this whole song, out loud, in our coach car, at the beginning of the journey. I did the same thing when I was 6🤣 back in I believe was 2010
Yeah I don't believe you

This is my childhood. I rode this train three times.

I can't wait to ride! I see the train almost everyday. Me and my 4 year old daughter sing this song all the time
I rode this wonderful train once, got to go up into the mountains and got to explore and old gold mine!
Love ❤️ this video, I have rode on Durango and Silverton Train for 5 years , since I rode on it in 1999 when I was little boy 👦

trains like that define steam engines and they are so pretty so in sinc. they are so elegant and so beautiful
Love this one. I would love to railfan it, but I live in Pennsylvania! Someday...
Love The Durango and Silverton Train 🚂 I rode the train when I was little boy, now I rode on it 5 times ❤️🚂
Wonderful! I got to work in the area, all around the train, as a geologist in the mountains, back in 1976, looking down on the train! Brings back great memories!!
This is one of my favorite videos on here. You did a mighty fine job editing it and got some great footage.
Thank you, great memories of this song. Great video
lets see last time I rode this I think I was 10 so that was 34 years ago , great video , thanks for the memories
Wonderful! I grew up listening to this song and dreaming about this railroad! You made this video just as I imagined it!
Man this brings back memories. In the 90s I worked at a bar across from the Durango station. We used to get slammed when that train would get back from Silverton!
really a great video . I rode her back in June this year to relive my childhood memories from 30 years ago . It was a beautiful ride ..
Love it! I drove from Durango to Silverton years ago. Couldn't get my wife to ride the train. Must of been that line in the song "You're gonna get a shiver when you check out the river..." I love this song! its kinda catchy to I like it
I have been on this train when I was a kid and the experience is so amazing!!!!!!! Everyone should do it at least once!
Well i can say im hooked. It was because of this video that i decided to find out more about k-36 480, and now i can anwser almost any question about it. thanks!
Awesome, well done video I have added this to my favorites to view again.
I had this video as a kid and that song made me smile! Cool to find it. :)
Ab fab!!! This is the perfect starting point for a Durango and Silverton Railway ad; Bill Fries nailed the run in a nutshell for the songwork (two decades of advertising experience helps). ;-)
Four stars! This video brings me back to the San Jauns every time I see it. Perfect in every way. Thank you.
Pretty much the best song ever. Great shots. Thanks for sharing!

Ah yes, a true masterpiece of a song, and this video makes it even better! Great work!
You need to ride this before it is not around anymore with the world we live in someone will cry about the smoke and shut it down. Awesome trip!
This song is from the documentary that C.W Mcall narrated

I just got the urge to do it, I hadn't seen another D&SNG music video online to that song.
