Need more weight on the indicator setup. The fly should be ticking bottom. And use two flies. It doubles your hookups. Another good fly you should use is a beadhead pheasant tail or any BH mayfly. Also mend your line during your cast to keep the fly in the strike zone for the longest amount of time
Good stuff man...
I would also do a water load to cast up stream. Either a dry dropper or indicator with two nymphs
Ooooh dry dropper on that feeding brown trout. Didn't even think of that. I'll bring that setup next week and get that brown
Please make your fishing videos much longer. And remember to do catch clean and cooks. God bless you and your family and remember we are here to support you!❤😮😊
I’m not a fisherman or an outdoorsman etc., but I really love your videos!
Never too late!!!
Never too late man! I’m 24 just moved to Idaho and have been camping fishing since moving here I love this lifestyle wish I had a father that I could’ve shared it with earlier in life, butttt never to late life is full of adventures if you let yourself !
There’s nothing like streams in the sierras. I have great memories of working my way upstream from pool to pool. Love the rocks and the smell of the pines.
That's a beautiful area with the rocks and river. Best of luck in your new home and business.
Man i gotta say i really do love your freshwater stuff bro
Get a 9ft 3x nylon leader and add fluorocarbon tippet(4x-6x) if you're going to fly fish with an indicator. I recommend the Oros strike indicator. And invest on a good fly line.
Love the Stanislaus! I’ve been skunked in that spot many times. Those fish are educated.
I like to use a 1/16 oz crappie jig with a green skirt/clear tail. Tail is split in 6-8 straight tails. Just jig it like you are. Also, if any overhanging brush/limbs you can use a clear casting bobber and cast up stream and direct right under the instructions.
For roll casting you do not want your D loop on the opposite side of your body from the anchor. That fly almost clipped you a few times in the chin. Instead, if the anchor is downstream of you, form the D loop on the downstream side of your body. If you want to form the D loop on the upstream side of your body, then you need to get that fly on the upstream side of your body as well(see switch casts).
Very nice fishing, Matts. I really enjoy your trout fishing videos.
All fishermen know how frustrating it is to see the fish but not able to catch it. 🐟🎣
Jiggin for trout is my favorite way to fish for them. Throw out some power bait on one rod and jig with the other, especially in that deeper lake water. Could even use drop shot. You da man! Love the vids
Black Stonefly Nymph either single or double bead (depends on depth and current) with a small Prince Nymph tied on the shank with a short 6" leader. Cast as far upstream as possible to let it sink. Mend your line for a natural slow drift. Nice video as always
Have you tried tenkara fly fishing? Looks like it could work well there, especially if the fish are easily spooked.
BTW swimbaits and berkley gulp minnows like that work AMAZING for trout. Small sinking jerkbaits are deadly when trout fishing. You can also experiment by using a soft plastic that imitates a small crayfish on a jighead. Good luck out there, looking forward to seeing you catch that brown! 🎣
For us landlocked states where fresh water action is all we get, a jig head with swim bait is THE SETUP. Glad to see it in your arsenal!
I'm so glad you're back!!!!! Your videos are very good, you are positive and cheerful!!!! It's very nice to watch you😃😉😉
So glad you are posting regularly again bro!
Yes, the jig heads with white grubs work great however the hooks are large, oriented upwards, and with a large barb. Sometimes the hook will go up through the "nose" of the fish doing damage. I always bend down the barb to minimize the potential damage. You will find the you will get tons of hits with the grubs but often they are hitting and sometimes biting the tail off. They are also great for fishing funky pockets, between rock piles, in crevices and whatnot.
Great video! I tried using a jighead with a small crappie swimbait this week. It slayed them. I was using an inline spinner and had to switch over after watching the guy next me slay them with a crappie jig set up. After i saw everyone switch over around us. I think i ended up catching about 30 stockers that afternoon in a small public pond.
jigging for trout with white tube jigs is one of my favorite ways to fish for big cutthroat in deep water. I use up too 3/4oz sometimes especially in the summer when the fish are in deep cooler water.
I got a pal in Vermont who absolutely slaughters fish with a smokey grey swim bait and jig weight. He can catch just about everything Lake Champlain has to offer with that combo. Thanks for the video, as usual, looking forward to the camping trip video!
Keep on living the dream Matt.
Using soft plastics for trout is pretty common in NZ and Australia. It's a great technique!
I miss doing that kind of walking on the rocks. I have a messed up knee now, tried to walk on the rocks this summer a little bit and I can't even do easy hikes on uneven terrain anymore. Still catch plenty of fish from the boat though!
That is a beautiful spot, thanks for sharing.
Hope you get that brown on the next one! Always good to see the notification go off for fishermanslife!
Jigz n wormz seem good too. Anyways, what a beautiful place Matts…keep catching ‘em
It's been fun watching you mature both in life and fishing. Thanks for sharing. One of the Addicted boys did a vid with Bill Herzog fishing sculpin pattern jig heads. Back in the day it was a muddler minow. Lol
Good to see you posting regularly again!
Love your channel!! I’m over in Soulsbyville right above Sonora. Nice to see you hittin the local rivers
planning on coming up next year in summer for my birthday, really excited. already practicing my flyfishing.
Nice! I want to get up to your farm eventually. When you fish in the winter, use small flies like size 18 zebra midges or Hogan’s S and M nymph for BWO nymphs. Stoneflies aren’t very active in the winter until January. Another tip is if you want to keep your leader intact and fish a lot deeper, use a small size 12 swivel on the end of your leader. Then add about 3 feet of tippet. Add maybe 14 inches more tippet from the end of that to your fly. Then add the split shot above the knot to keep it from sliding down. Also if you do those big overhead cast with the indicator rig, then you will get tangled a ton. Instead use a Belgian cast or the water load which is where you let the fly swing downstream (you might get a strike here) and use the friction of the water to shoot the line upstream in one cast. And if you want a longer drift, feed line out by throwing it downstream and across in the same lane as your indicator to avoid drag. Winter is tough, but at least there’s almost no one out there either!
Nice catch on the jig head ❤ im so pumped for you
Hey Matt , I believe you had a great behind you roll.
Keep practicing, your al.ost there🎉.
I new it was a Browny .
Next time you'll get em 👍.
JO JO IN VT 💞
My god, do my eyes deceive me?! A Fisherman's Life video!? Hell yeah! 8^)
I hope you've been well.
Loved that fade away dude!!
Love the consistency, these videos are always great to watch after a day of work.
Fly roll casting, leave the line in the water and use the weight of it to load the rod in an arcing move. You never casted to the other side of the scum line and maybe that's where they were?
I've fly fished for 30 years and would have flogged that water with everything in my kit BUT in the last 5-6 years after watching you and Adam surf fish I've come around and now will carry a second spin rod. Learning from your experience here swim baits are to be added to my arsenal. Love the Okuma SST, I use it for surf and Salmon. Dude, youre doing good.
My go to is usually a black fly pattern or hare's ear nymph. Good casting also!! On my roll cast I usually bring the rod tip up slower and create a D shape coming off the rod behind me. Makes for a nicer roll effect. Nice hull control as well 🤙🏽
try using swimm baits as small as possible, it will help with with the hookups. they often only attack the tails. 2,5cm to 4cm is best. the ones targeted to crappie and other sunfish work really well for me. i use them fishing small streams in germany . i caught my pb brown trout (22 inch) on a one inch curly tail . they are really cheap baits that outfish most spinners and crankbaits.
Another thing I love using for trout is the white tube jig it slays
With 2 lb test, you should be using something closer to 1/32 - 1/64th oz jigs. Lighter rod and smaller bait.
You should feel the weight of the backcast before starting the forecast.
As far as Nymphs to use, I like starting with a weighted Hare's Ear, a Black Stonefly, a Peacock with gold bead head, or of course the egg-sucking wooly bugger is always good. Depends on your creek. Fall/Winter is a great time for minnow patterns and an excellent time for spin fishing, either a 3" scented plastic (gulp) cast upstream and drifted downstream or with a small inline spinner. Some big fish will hit in the fall.
I may be wrong but that really resembles a cut throat rainbow hybrid at about the 5 minute mark. Good fish!
Try matching the hatch when you go fly fishing again look around for any signs of bugs and critters that match your flys but when all else fails i love using the black wooly bugger, it mimicks a hellgrammite wich trout love , or use the good ol rooster tail spinner on a ultralight spinning rod, red n black or the original color are my picks , the original color has a green feather skirt and a green n orange body with a gold blade hope this helps man and I enjoy your videos there very entertaining! 🤘🎣
Using softbaits as we call them in New Zealand ( swim baits) is a really popular method of catching trout.
Looked like you was swatting bees.😀
Watching all the way from south Africa
Man I miss fishing the streams up here in the North State, butte creek, and the feather river are in my neighborhood. I’ve had GREAT luck fishing butte creek, feather river not so much.
I’ve used Texas rigged senko worms the smallest size u can find and caught them on that love the bite!
That looks deadly ! that's exactly what I would say lol
I once caught two 17 inch trout from Calaveras creek on a spinning worm being retrieved rapidly in the same hour, I only got fish up to 14 inches by drift fishing a worm.
Casting out 1/32 size hookup baits on 2lb mono is also a killer for trout!
You should look into getting a Euro setup. Perfect for that water and deadly
That’s what I always say about my lures “that looks deadly” then proceed to catch nothing 😂
Bro, I highly recommend trying out some trout bfs gear! You’d kill it out there and have an absolute blast using it! 🙌🙌🙌
try a small jig head and grub/tubes that you use for crappies to fish for them trouts on the spinning rod.
Beaded wooly bugger in black or white, these are the go to.
Woolybuggers are the real deal man. Give them a try buddy
You absolutely have to go gold sniping in that river and make a video on it Matts! I would if it was in my back yard 😅
Looks good for hiking
Sculpin imitations are deadly on big trout in rivers. With that 1/4 oz jighead going down to the bottom it looks like it'd be a very nice imitation.
Nice job. Try a small black leech looking jig.
Make sure your anchor is downstream and not to cross the line in front of you as the fly might snag you, the line or your leader. For some of these situations you should look at learning a snake roll cast for more effective change of direction when casting upstream. Otherwise always a great video from you!
Midges are typically in the water year round and an easy source of food for trout. A black bead-head zebra midge is my confidence nymph...Sizes 18-22. If the fish are taking jigs...then you could cast size 2-6 weighted streamers and get some decent action as well, especially if browns are active.
Matt have you ever tried the trout magnet? They really cool I use them under a bobber. Try it bro
Man I live what you've done to the channel. We have a ranch property too and it's the best!
I'm going to bring my boys to California over Christmas break foe some fishing. Any recommendations on where some newbies could fish? I'm not a newbie to fishing, but I've never fished the California coast, only the east coast. I'm going to try for some crab snaring and it would be great to get on some rock fish from shore. I'll have my kayak with me which I've taken out on some pretty big water, but not sure I'll get it out on this trip.
2 fly setup, golden stone on top with about 18" tied to bend of hook and a copper john or pheasant tail as trailing fly. Rubber legs on top works good too. More weight to get you down on bottom for longer. Mend that line!!
What about split shots? How high above the top fly?
@@FishermansLife run them about 12 inches up
@FishermansLife also I run my indicator up near the the butt section. At least 7 feet.
I think your casting looks pretty good from here. You may benefit from a little more patience on the backswing before throwing forward but we all do that from time to time anyway. I'm not sure if I read earlier that someone suggested putting on dropper and putting a weight above the top/floating fly, but I wouldn't recommend that because it wouldn't present those flys to a fish naturally. I also want to point out that someone suggested you mishandled that bow, I could have sworn I saw you squat down to wet your hand. Thanks for the great entertainment! Always professional!
You can always add a tippet to your leader to make it longer
I’d love to fish some of the American national parks one day
Arnold, Ca. has a wonderful fly fishing coach.
I don’t fly fish, yet I have given him a secret spot and it’s still secret. Most important to protect our area.
Then why did you type Arnold Ca?
Yo matt, fun fact. My wife used to think you were me in the videos lol, and I let her think that for a while until she realized it haha. Be careful with the scissors bro.
Did you wet your hands Matts? 😂😮
Dang nice haven’t caught trouts in ages though would love to if I could
Need to take you fishing for steelhead here in the PNW.
Try a small diving Rapala for those big deep holes. Best of luck!
LUV the underwater/river view of that gorgeous trout . Next time have your rig ready to go....you were taking too much time on the edge of the rock/overhang ... ya know...
Your cast is better than mine
I think amber lens sunglasses would help.
That trout looks like it would be so good cooked on a stick over the fire
Yea Boy
First rule of fly fishing, its a strike indicator not a bobber. Said in a snarky voice of course.
Try adding Sierra Slammers to your bag .
YESSSIRRRRR ANOTHER VID
Hey Matt, Another great video! I have just one question and it doesn’t even have to do with fishing, what kind of shoes are you wearing in this video? I have been looking for a good pair of hi top hiking/athletic shoes to wear fishing and those look like they just that.
Fly fishing always seems much more peaceful than other methods, and it's pretty much the only way we can fish freshwater down here in NZ, the regulations are a bit tight 😅
Where are you? There's heaps of places in the North Island where you can spin or use soft plastics. Here in Northland, F&G have just switched to any method fishing including bait and an all year open season on all waters!
@@mbnz0174I'm in Auckland, and that's a big change from when I last went fresh water years ago, if we can use softies and baits I might have to start hitting the streams and lakes again! Thanks for telling me!
A good fly to try is called royal coachman .they have tem in Canada, maybe usa
You should get a net for trout fishing, the less handling the fish receive the better the odds are for survival
1. Cast on your right (downstream)side.
2. Cast further upstream.
Love your videos! What river is this ??
I've caught trout with bass tackle, dropshots and Ned rigs
Awesome 🥰🤗👋👍🎣🐟🐠
If you dont know what to use as a fly, flip over some rocks near the bank or see what's actually flying around. And tie something on that looks similar.
Get the 3 trout coloured Rapala CD5's too, you have no idea how efficient they are when you learn to use them...
Really small feather jigs should work good.
Need to try a small rapala jerk bait
What kind of spining Rod and reel are you using 👍
You should try gold panning.
awesome
