  • The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.4!
    In this tutorial, we locate a slime chunk and build a slime farm.
    Want to know how to locate a slime chunk without the world seed? It's definitely possible - although it might involve a little bit of luck and a lot of strip mining.
    In this case, we build a slime farm in one chunk off the coast of a mushroom island, taking advantage of the hostile spawn free environment of the mushroom fields biome to max out the mob cap in our chosen chunk.
    Through a combination of sponges, a haste II beacon, and moss, we carve out the entire chunk all the way to bedrock - then build a farm which lures the slimes into a nether portal where they are quickly dispatched by soul campfires and the slimeballs are harvested.
    Along the way we discuss why we aren't building the farm in a swamp, explain how terrain height affects mob spawning in Minecraft Java Edition, and discover why it isn't always a good idea to set up a personal nether portal near a nether farm.

    It might be worth mentioning that the idea to limit the number of spawning platforms is only really viable if your spawning platform is actually at Y=-63 (or Y=0 in the nether or end). Each tick, the game picks a random Y-level between the bottom of the world and the highest non-air block, which with 6 blocks of bedrock layers below the spawning platform has a 1 in 6 chance to actually hit a Y-level where there is a spawning floor. If you add a second spawning floor 3 or 4 blocks higher (big slimes can still spawn and move perfectly with only 2.5 blocks vertical room), you suddenly get a 2 in 9 or 10 chance for the spawn algorithm to hit a valid Y-level, which is better than the single layer. With 5 layers you get a 5 in 25 or 5 in 20 chance for the algorithm to hit a valid layer.
    A single slime chunk, especially when using portals, will not hit the mob cap, if no spawnable caves are available. So if this is still to slow for your taste (and you don't mind obtaining even more obsidian), go ahead and fill up the chunk so you are standing with your feet at or below Y=39 on the highest spawning floor. Top slabs with 2.5 blocks of air gap will allow you to make even more floors.
    You will probably not want that farm near your base then, as eventually its storage will overflow if it gets loaded passively all the time and cause unnecessary lag from all the slimes, iron golems, and items the backed-up hoppers can no longer pick up. It's usually better to make a more efficient farm and AFK at it for a bit, than to have a less efficient farm running constantly.

  • @canadianavenger
    @canadianavenger Před 9 měsíci +12

    One thing I've found with swamp based slime farms/single player is that you really don't need a large one to get more than enough slime. In my world I had a sliver of a swamp biome near my base (less than 3 chunks in size, of that 170ish blocks are actually swamp biome) And thought I'd give it a try. (I usually dig out a chunk as you do) I built a single layer mushroom based farm over it. Despite it's small size, I still got more than enough slime for my needs, in a single overnight AFK session. I won't need to AFK there again for quite a while. So while perhaps not as fast as a chunk based farm build down at bedrock, it's a lot faster/easier to build, and still get enough for most peoples needs. Having said that, digging out a chunk is also a great resource gathering exercise, so still has some merits.

      @rabonour Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I have a not-particularly-efficient swamp-based farm and it still produces way more slime than I need. If you're not producing redstone megaprojects something like this is probably overkill, but at the same time I totally get that building high-output farms can be fun in and of itself so to each their own.

    A good slime farm in the swamp starts with a spawn platform covered in brown mushrooms and darkened.
    The brown mushrooms produce a light level of 1, stopping most spawns except slime.
    Then you add an iron golem with killing chamber below. Done.
    Just be careful how high you place the spawn platform, they only spawn between 51 and 69 in the above ground swamp. Place the platform at 68 and afk 125 blocks above the bottom of the killing chamber.

    I remember on one of my old worlds where I had taken over a mushroom biome. Removed all the mycelium and converted it to grass. The color's just so vibrant and lush in it. And this was before the days of moss.
    There was a strange anomaly in world gen. It was a HUGE island I remember i had some 75k Mycelium shoveled up. Oceans all around it and an ocean biome in the middle of it. Kind of like a donut from above. There were 3x slime chunks that i made a farm out of. While im just building away at the top, it was like someone turned on spawning overdrive! I had done a lot of caving in the surrounding areas and it was well lit in the non mushroom biomes. Best slime farm I ever created!
    The most rewarding too because the area was so nice to look at and i could do mood lighting with 0 fear of creepers haha. Pretty sure that was well before caves and cliffs, 1.10 maybe. Man i wish i still had that world!

    This style of farm is still good if you have a long lived world. I made one near a mooshroom island but still needed a decent amount of spawn proofing under the ocean. The description of the height-based spawning mechanics isn’t quite right. The game chooses an X-Z location, then finds the highest block of any kind in that column and picks a random Y value between the bottom of the world (-64 in the overworld) and the highest block (inclusive). It then tries to spawn a mob at that random Y value between those two points. With a platform at Y=64, that gives you a 1/129 chance of getting a mob on your platform. At Y=-59, it’s a 1/6 chance, making a spawn attempt ~20 times more likely to succeed.

    FYI: In Bedrock, powdered snow will eliminate fall damage. Also, if you like living life on the edge, hay bales will reduce fall damage (I'm not talking about placing them as you fall, but already being in place when you drop). You only receive half a heart of damage from a height of 26 blocks, and 0 damage from 10 blocks or less (the only two heights I checked with hay bales & there's no good reason why I picked those two).

    A good way to increase rates would be to dig out five blocks around the platforms from the bottom to top of the farm (obviously the golems will still need something to stand on) as that would increase pack spawning. That would give you 20-30% more spawns.

      Honestly doesn't sound that bad as long as there's some spawnable space between Y=40 and whatever level the Deep Dark biome takes over (usually below Y=0).
      Since the Deep Dark doesn't naturally spawn mobs, you've just been gifted a ton of caves you don't have to spawnproof, making your slime farm much more effective.
      This farm doesn't have to be built at the lowest point of the world, it'll only be as effective as the highest platform in the chunk

  • @graviola2085
    @graviola2085 Před 9 měsíci

    I think there is a small geometry problem here. The spawn area is an sphere, so the afk point being 128 points from the bottom and center of the opposing portal of the bottom layer means some areas in the corners of the bottom layer would be in the auto-despawn area. And this areas are larger as you go up the layers. The effect is not big because the 16-20 height is small compared to the 128 radius. But it would probably make all portals in the far away wall of the all layers, except the bottom one, being useless because they would be in the auto-despawn area. A better option would be make the afk point in the middle height of the layers instead of the bottom one. But to make all areas in all layers productive you would have to be a little closer. That would increase the area outside the farm where mobs can spawn, so I don't know if it's worth it.

    • @andrejosue98
      @andrejosue98 Před 8 měsíci

      But it is not a perfect sphere..if you stand at y=128 (using 0 as the killing place), most parts of a chunk are already at the spawn range, with some small parts that aren't.
      At y=127, more than a chunk is outside the despawn range, that would make a single chunk slime farm completely loaded.
      Slime chunk based farms are always better to have an afk spot above the killing chamber, even if there are multiple slime chunks, in that case you just lower the afk spot by a couple of blocks and that would work

    Hey Pixlriffs. I recently started a new Java world, and I set up base on a couple of mushroom islands. As such I've spend around 300 minecraft days on that island by now and I have noticed that mobs can indeed spawn there. It happens rarely enough that I haven't found a pattern to it. Only once it has been a creeper, which spawned a few blocks inland (well within the bounding box of the mushroom biome) but otherwise it has been zombies. These have spawned around three times in packs of 3-4 in those 300 days, mostly very near me, like within 24 blocks, even had on appear right in front of me. So not sure what is going on there. Also I learned that mycelium does indeed overtake grass, so as you work on your terraforming you have to put a non-dirt block between your grass and mycelius zones.

    • @Pigborg
      @Pigborg Před 9 měsíci +3

      Mycelium does not take over grass. It takes over dirt, as grass does, but they don’t actually take each other over. As for the mobs, it’s possible that the mushroom biome doesn’t extend all the way to the edge of mycelium, or that a pack of mobs spawned just outside the biome and some of the pack spawned in the mushroom. Another possibility is that they wandered in from a nearby spawnable area.

    • @kenneth_ez
      @kenneth_ez Před 9 měsíci

      @@Pigborg Hey, thank you for taking the time to answer. :) I definitely had mycelium take over grass, maybe it was a fluke, I will test next time I am ingame. With regards to mob spawning I think you are correct in that it must have been a partial pack spawn on the edge of the biome. That would explain the higher number of zombies rather than any other mob, right. I also think that the additional zombies that spawned could have been using that "reinforcement"-rule to spawn in, despite being deeper within the biome.

    • @Pigborg
      @Pigborg Před 9 měsíci

      @@kenneth_ez those are good ideas, especially the reinforcement one. Can you describe what the mycelium taking over grass is like? The mycelium-grass myth was created from people misunderstanding Hermitcraft season 7’s turf war, in which people sided with mycelium or grass and tried to claim an island with their respective type. @Pixlriffs  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Sure! It’s always worth considering how much you actually need before taking on a farm project.
      Personally I wanted a farm design that would let me fill up a shulker box with slime blocks, since I plan on using them for flying machines and other contraptions later into the series.

      They do, sea lanterns are better

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  Před 9 měsíci +2

      They shouldn't, IIRC, for the same reason that flowers and tall grass don't block mob spawns - torches are transparent and have no collision, so they aren't considered an obstruction when spawning mobs.
      Regardless, the torches aren't necessary once the nether portals are lit - they provide plenty of light to prevent other hostile mob spawns.

    Also, I found it strange seeing packed snow in the nether - and on top of soul campfires to boot - when water doesn’t survive there.

    • @marcy1232

      the iron golem thing was a change from 1.15 - when they started changing texture to cracking to reflect damage take, they also added the ability to repair them

      @paulelderson934 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah, Minecraft is kind of weird like that. Ice in the nether is totally fine as well, which is even weirder considering that a nearby torch is hot enough to defrost it in the overworld.

    I could hear only two hits on your shield, Pixl. How come they have destroyed it all?

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  Před 9 měsíci +2

      It's tricky to explain, but since I'm *inside* the slimes when I come through the portal, they basically have the potential to deal damage the entire time our hitboxes overlap.
      Each time a player takes damage, they get a half second of invulnerability from other damage, so I probably would've avoided fatal damage from the slimes if I hadn't been blocking. The shield animation and sound effects occur at the same interval, regardless of how much damage the shield is taking - but the shield doesn't benefit from the 'invincibility frames' the player gets, so the slimes are dealing hits to my shield as fast as the game will allow (which I suspect is based on game ticks, so it's 20 hits per second.)

    stupid question, why do you put a waterlogged chest at the bottom of you safe fall rather than just a water source block?

    • @oh-yeah-yeah
      @oh-yeah-yeah Před 9 měsíci

      Waterlogging a chest leaves 1 pixel of water to fall on, which nullifies the fall damage just like water.
      The advantage of using a chest is that you can just walk out from the same block (instead of bobbing in the water).

    Can I build the nether portal for slimes above the nether roof?

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  Před 3 měsíci

      As long as you're okay having no other portals within 128 blocks in any direction, because the game will try to link to any portal that's closer to the 'ideal' coordinates.
      If it can draw a straight line to another Nether portal and it's closer than the one on the nether roof, it'll link to that instead.
      Also, if the one on the Nether roof is above about Y=130, the game might decide it's out of range and just create a new portal somewhere else.

    I thought they changed the mob spawning rules which is why the witch farms took a hit?

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  Před 9 měsíci

      No, witch farms took a hit because they kept the mob spawning rules the same but added 64 blocks below 0, making witch farms higher up in the world and therefore less efficient at spawning witches.
      There was a proposed change which would flatten mob spawning rates and not take height into account at all, but that was never implemented.

    • @HenryZhoupokemon

      Mobs only spawn within 128 blocks of the player, so you can’t leave spawn and have this farm running
      But if you’re at your spawn a lot, it could be a good farm to have built at spawn, though you’ll have to spawn proof the area
      I’m pretty sure swamp-based slime farms are faster now tho, and don’t require digging out a large area either
