    With all due respect to North Melbourne, who thoroughly deserved a second premiership in the 90’s - the 1999 AFL Grand Final was actually a bit of an anti-climax in a season best remembered for Carlton’s upset 1 point preliminary final win over top team Essendon, which denied the bombers a 16th flag before the new millennium. The resultant Grand Final afterwards is often forgotten. If the bombers had managed to overcome the blues, the Grand Final between would have been a much better game.
    It’s also worth noting, that through all the VFL/AFL teams that won the premiership without finishing on top of the ladder (and there are quite a few) - North Melbourne is the only team that had won it without beating (or having to beat) the team that did finish first to claim the premiership.

    • @Adam-XL
      @Adam-XL Před 5 lety

      That last bit is not true, it had happened a few times before.

    • @jasonvandermeer9854
      @jasonvandermeer9854 Před 5 lety

      Adam Zero which other premiership teams went through the year without beating the minor premier? West Coast did not have to beat minor premier Richmond in the 2018 finals to claim the premiership, but they did beat them in the home and away season.
      If there were other teams that finished 2nd or below on the ladder and won the premiership without beating the top team, it must have been in the early, early VFL days, if at all. Remember, the majority of lower ranked premiers beat the top team in the Grand Final.

    • @Adam-XL
      @Adam-XL Před 5 lety +1

      @@jasonvandermeer9854 ohh I thought you meant a team that didnt beat the minor premier in a finals series, in that case the only other time was Sydney in '05, who never beat Adelaide for the whole season

    • @jasonvandermeer9854
      @jasonvandermeer9854 Před 5 lety +2

      Adam Zero good pickup there about Sydney in 2005! It’s often forgotten that Adelaide were in fact the minor premiers that year (I think they only got top spot in the last round?) and you are right, they beat eventual premiers Sydney twice during the h&a season and the Swans did not have to face them in the finals. In fact, most of the recent premiers have not finished on top of the ladder - the only minor premiers in the last 10 years that won the premiership are Collingwood in 2010 & Hawthorn in 2013!

      Even worse now. Over umpired, with ridiculous rule changes made by the afl. The whistle controls the game, umpires have far to much say and presence in the game. The media have turned it into a soap opera, it’s embarrassing. Kills me cause I am a die hard north fan, but i, like many won’t continue to support this once, amazing sport.

    • @Igloo3471

      Yes it looks like a slower paced adult fumbleball with no intensity. The umpires taking centre stage having to be constantly heard on their little mics playing Spin the Wheel with a lot of their decisions. It's an absolute mess!

      Cooked.
      Bombed out in the first round of the Ansett Cup at home to Port by 6 goals.
      Bit of a scratchy start to the season but started to hit their straps and got to 4-2 after six rounds but fell in a hole and slumped to five defeats on the trot.
      Attempted to try getting things back on track but couldn't sustain any consistency through the back half of the season and ended up going out with a whimper dropping their final four games by 39, 108, 24 and 76 points to slump to 13th with an 8-14 record.
      Blight chucked it in at the end of the season, got them to two flags in consecutive years but had nothing left. They did remarkably well to nick two flags after finishing 13-9 (4th) in '97 and 13-9 (5th) in '98.
