My wife was one of the choir singers for this song. They sang at Ryan's retreat center where he also got married at. They said Ryan was just a regular guy with a wife and kid, you would never otherwise know that he was rich and famous. She said he and Brian Wall were great to work with, first class all the way, and everyone had fun. So my thanks for my wife to Ryan, Brian, and Ben and everyone else involved.
He’s super awesome, they both were!! I was one of his nurses and it was just hilarious doing the hospital room scene, ha!! Was such a great experience!!

What I love about this is it's relevant to where we are in life. I drove five hours to a Macklemore concert at the Dallas House of Blues in October 2017 while pregnant. My baby's 3, a week younger than his second daughter. We all grow up but the music is still here.

My favorite is the metaphors and symbolism used throughout the entire video. Such an optimistic message and sound while perhaps telling a much deeper story.
Maybe I'm right on some, or maybe this is all just my subjective view of the video, but here's my interpretation:
The story begins with the wealthy yachtsman taking things to the next level, speeding up his own agenda. Cutting then to Ben and his imaginary family, living in their modest, warm, and cozy 'house' boat. A disturbance is on the television, (Ryan) but perhaps a reference to when the TVs were all telling us to quarantine early on, as the next scenes show Ben leaving off to work but instead putting his helmet (PPE protection) on and embarking on a kayak out into the vast lonely openness before being tipped over by the 'waves' caused from the yacht. The red helmet, kayak and paddles all perhaps reinforce the idea of things 'stopping' or being in a state of emergency. While coming to shore, Ben is peppered with golf balls that do damage to his property, perhaps a reference to the previous president's hobby, and/or the protests, as he grabs as throws back one of the 'non-lethal' balls in defiance.
Cut to Windser singing the chorus while sitting in a red floating hot tub. A symbol of isolation, as there are no paddles or way to move, but of being able to enjoy the perks of being isolated, as the water is heated, and though you cannot move, you can enjoy yourself so long as there is energy for the heater (stimulus/UIA).
"I'm sick of missing out, sick of the fear and the doubt... alone in my room" sings Ben while driving alone in his awesome Honda accord, which shows signs of damage but is still running, until it crashes into the Parks and Rec building, symbolizing how EVERYTHING halted for a while there, even parks were shut down.
This happens while the neighbor takes his wife to the hospital, perhaps a reference to us not being able to even be at the hospital with our loved ones during the pandemic.
Ben crawls out of the broken back window to exit his car, perhaps capturing that feeling a lot of us had of feeling stuck and having to choose to move backward in order to move forwards. Non-essential workers felt like their previous career had crashed, and the only way was to exit in whichever way possible and keep finding a way to move forward.
Ben is now limping, clearly not 100%, but still giving it his best and even running forward, making tons of progress even though he's now on foot instead of having the vehicle (career) that previously carried him forward.
He runs past a liquor store without stopping as he sings about having 'one last' of several addictions and dependencies. He comes to a bridge and crosses that bridge himself on foot, even if limping.
But a man can only do so much himself. And the next scene shows him exhausted and sitting on a bench.
Enter, Windser, the bus driver. (Who now is 'employed', not just 'floating' aimlessly in the mobile marine hottub)
A reference to the 'tour' life. Windser 'rescues' Ben from himself and stagnation and gives him a way to still move forward towards his goal when his energy was almost depleted. Ben and the others in turn give Windser a new occupation and direction in life.
For the first time in the music video, Macklemore has returned to music, as he sits in the back of the bus and puts on headphones, and begins to jam again.
His briefcase falls, and a pirated version of Nickelback's 'Greatest Hits' CD falls out and rolls down the isle of the bus, invoking judgment from the other passengers.
The CD comes from Ben's suitcase, which symbolizes his 'work'.
So the CD is representing his deepest fears...
What will his body of work / legacy be? Will people love him or hate him for the music he has made? Will he be able to monetize his songs or will people just pirate everything? If Nickelback was once popular and accepted but now a guilty nostalgic pleasure to be listened to in private, will his art hold the same fate in the future?
A man on the bus sees the CD and gets angry. Is he mad because someone is listening to Nickelback - or is he mad that somebody pirated Nickelback? Regardless, the incident of opposing views leads to a scuffle aboard the public form of transportation, leading to Ben being carried away on a stretcher.
"So sick of sitting on the benches... I ain't waiting for coach, marching band (or marching banned?)... fuck next year, the time is now to press Go"
"I'm still an optimist" even as he's beaten up and loaded into the red ambulance. A reflection of the ambulance in the hospital windows shows various reflections of the red vehicle, perhaps symbolizing the many many months of state of emergency shutdowns, or perhaps showing many slightly different perspectives of the same subject matter.
He peers out of it's open red door with a look on his face that he just wants to move forward, but instead, he's injured and still trapped in this state of emergency vehicle.
He's now in the hospital looking upwards at the nurses pushing him on a stretcher. The 3 nurses in the front don't have masks on, and you can see them lipping 'you're going to be okay'. Windser enters the scene, pushing past the 4th nurse who is masked, and pulls down his own mask and begins to sing, "Next years' going to be better than this". The next scene shows Windser now distanced behind the group of doctors, joyfully skipping down the hall of the hospital with his mask still down and still singing the chorus. Cutting back to Ben, who is now in a hospital room for his own injuries, is reunited with his wife who was brought to the hospital to give birth. The entire room and their clothing all have green tones to them, as they did in the houseboat at the beginning, as perhaps a reference to green screens and that this whole family is made up as a form of storytelling.
The wealthy neighbor who drove the large yacht that caused the waves that disrupted Macks journey is also there. The baby is born, but with an identical face mole that shows that the baby is indeed the wealthy man's, reinforcing the symbolism that the wealthy man has been fucking Ben over since the beginning, but what can he do about it?
Anybody else able to relate to any of these? Could anything be intentional or am I just projecting my own thoughts onto this wonderful work of art?
You know it ain't no music calendar without The Mack.... May these words ring beyond the next year, and beyond ALL Years!!!!

You have no idea how badly I needed this right now. I first listened to Macklemore 7 years ago when I got clean. I relapsed and had a psychotic break while trying to get clean again, I woke up today with a clear head and not hearing voices. I'm doing whatever I can to better myself. I'm either being reunited or losing my family today. I can't lose them. We gotta change, this video was scary how much I needed it.
I listened to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis as a child, going through the worst of my depression, they've been such a beacon of hope to me my entire adult life. I hope you can do what you need to do to make your situation better. Sending love.

Good news is I got reunited with my family. I've also stopped opiates, adderall, xanax, and drinking every day. I'm not great, but I'm not using that stuff everyday and that's way 10x better overall

Love the duality of this song. It sounds like a happy song about being hopeful but the lyrics also sound very much like someone who is new in recovery saying they are going to have just one more before the new year.

I am from Olympia,Wa, and grew up watching ben flourish as a young MC myself looking up to him since 2005 and following the course, he set for the region. I myself had had a little success and I make deep music like mac, funny cuz we were both born June 19th. I knew mac was special since I was 15 listening to him on DJ hyphen sound session dreaming one day I might get played on there as well. I have battled addiction as well, and I look up to mac as like a mentor in a sense and try to learn from the path he paved for this region, all the respect and love to you and Ryan and the family!
