Kevin Barnes said their 11 year old daughter was the inspiration for this song. I love this song, and the music video just solidifies all the reasons I love it!
Still waiting for the Weird Al parody called “It’s different for squirrels.”
"Pecan or acorn, it's not how you're born.."
Damnit, I couldn't even get mad. Its brilliant!
Probably my favorite comment on CZcams, thanks
Honestly I'm surprised that this wasn't a bigger breakout hit. Of Montreal has always been successful - but this song is so fresh, so relevant, and so extremely catchy and funky I was expecting it to really explode and reach a wider audience.
it was a little too obvious and I dont know if its post modern girls just want to have fun vibe was totally appreciated
I like ween and feminism so I dig it
Too political for people ig
Apparently the girls are holding their cards pretty tight.
Didn't catch on because girls don't like it when a man pretends to understand what it's like to be them.
this guy has the loveliest smile. starts smiling towards the end of the song and it's just .... awwww.
Bridget S. He's so adorable omggg 😍
I haven't been here in a bit and almost tried to like your comment again.
@@brideofallunquietthings7992 how come you didn't? did I do something wrong?
@@bridgets.6464 you can't like something twice
Lmao third time
*sheds one tear because the little girl in the video is so happy and cute and this song is so great*
The great part about that is that it's a little boy. He was mad cool and gave all the pros a run for our money dancing lol
do you remember his name?
That's awesome. I was just looking at him and thinking about what it would would be like if this tune was around when I was his age. And I actually shed a tear lmao
I thnik the best part is that actually you can't tell by watching this video :D
Nobody is slightly bother by a little boy dancing in drag at a (seemingly) homosexual party?
I'm sure the video has the best intentions but it comes across as a bit rapey.
Everytime they come out with a new song, I get super scared because I'm afraid it might not be good, because a lot of musicians are like that... but I'm never, ever disappointed. I love this song so fucking much.
Agreed, however I was slightly disappointed with Aureate Gloom.... but don't tell them I said that! I love everything else they've done, OM is the best :D *looks around nervously
They are! And I get to see them my 3rd time in September :3
Lucky! I saw them once in St. Louis for the False Priest tour. It was amazing. Janelle Monet opened for them.
My feelings exactly.
Oh no! I LOVED Aureatte Gloom! I think every record has a life of it's own, it's almost unfair to compare one to another. i feel the same way about Lousy, it's just different. I love love love this record, and will see them for the fourth time next week.
Thank you Kevin Barnes for making music that has gotten me through genuinely the worst periods of my life, and still continues to do so. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
This song made me feel some kind of peace i didnt understood back then, now i do 💜💛🖤
lol at all the people who think this is tounge in cheek or has a different meaning or "some joke" when this is like one of the most straight forward songs they've ever written. your favorite band is feminist get over it
i dont think theres anyone out there like you're describing... if you see Kevin in any one of his outfits i think its clear OM is pro gay and pro woman... they have an lp called the gay parade... cmon now
@@LittleDinkens Ya and gay parade is essentially about how gay people are portrayed as and encouraged to be freakish.
This isn't feminist, brah. This is another straight white boy claiming he understands women while objectifying them. "All of them are gods" nah, buddy, they're just people. Don't make anyone out to be better or worse based on any identity assignment, that just furthers the division. This song is actually really fucking ignorant. Then again, I'm also a straight white boy, so I can't say...
@@jakermon1014 LOL well here's a tip : don't mix music with politics,it's dopey and you'll miss out on a lot if reasons to dance.
No to me this song isn't about making fun of "girls" it's about making fun of guys putting girls on a pedestal even gay guys, it's the naivete of idolizing girls that's the subject not girls themselves, but it's fun, it's just poking fun
Admittedly different from the strange fantasy of other of Montreal videos, this one works well with the song in that it has a clear statement to make-and I love it. People are people and deserve to be celebrated, love is love, and Kevin Barns is masterful; that's what I took away from this
hella love this song also love how everyone in the video looks like they're having a hella good time

girls just wanna have fun !
Having a good times....with kids involved. Per usual.
ive been waiting my whole life to hear this song
I like your profile pic 😏
pablo honey moment 💀
This is so weird and awesome. I love it. Kevin's smile at 3:09 cracks me up
is fucking cute
So this is my 2 year olds favorote song. No night night until "is girls" plays.. 😄
These guys play with music so well
Yes.. awesome
Poor kid
I HOPE THAT LITTLE KID IS HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE
They have been my favorite band for over a decade. This is one of the many reasons why.
this video was so much fun to work on
what did you do on it?
Did you fluff the talent?
“For every one psycho chick, there's 10,000 hateful pricks” Nothing could be more true!
I'm pretty sure the ratio is more like 1:1
Wow, he did it again! ^_^ Kevin Barnes is an unstoppable creative force and he's way too precious
I love this song so much, I go back to it every so often for comfort and reasurence.
I recently had the pleasure of seeing of Montreal live and they opened with this song, my favorite! It was an incredible show, the best I've been to in a while.
Glad you got to see them! They put on such a wonderful show I agree. I've seen them two or three times and Kevin always puts on one of the most fun shows ever!!! :)
this video is one of my favourite things on the planet
I love you Kayla Christine
is that a tapir?
lovin the tapir
Kevin Barnes is so unapologetically gender fluid it fills my soul with love
@@rosskstar did anyone ask your fucking opinion?
John RossStar this is all a simulation man nothing matters you’re only alive to have fun
@@bloop9042Our lives are at present like an exhalation but it is still all very real. It's important to treat others well but also live as so to give credit to our creator, Jah with everlasting life in view.
@@rosskstar You realize all clothing is human invented right? everyone is just playing dress up. Sheets of clothing cut in a certain way have nothing to do with biology at all. He's playing with social norms because it's funny how much it triggers you.
John RossStar why are you under the assumption that just because YOU would regret gender reassignment surgery, everyone else also would?? u r not the center of the world pal, u sound very afraid of change
the message of this song is awesome. coming from a male perspective
I've been a huge fan of Kevin Barnes and of Montreal since undergrad in 08/09, this song is a call back to that time period. Glad he started using the more electronic styles from that time 1✌😎🤙
Serving up some Tammie Brown realness, work!
I feel like, through the years, of Montreal has been telling a joke that no one gets.
So... really bad at humour then.
Only time will tell.
I think i get it. His lyrics always make so much sense to me. Its like Bowie sorta
rg0057 just over so many heads
Jekyl Whispy I have felt for a long time that of Montreal is a strange extension of Bowie's music and vision of what music could and should be. I am an avid fan of both so maybe I'm bias but such ethereal and mystic music from both artists. Can't get enough of this music and always love seeing the changes going on. Bowie changed so much throughout his career, his early stuff being down right folk. It's great, I wish it was easier to find more musicians with this level of talent and creativity but I suppose that is what makes these guys special in such a saturated music scene.
This will forever be one of my favorite songs
LYRICS
[Verse 1]
It's different for girls
They've got sensitive language
They've built miles of defenses
They're not numbed by oppression
It's different for girls
From when they are children, they're depersonalized
Aggressively objectified
They want to make a scene
They want to be adored
And then they want to be left alone when they get bored with that
It's different for girls
They are mercurial creatures, not a masculine dissonance
Or sexual currency
[Chorus]
Though some of them are demons, all of them are gods
Though some demons are women
For every one psycho bitch, there's ten thousand aggro pricks
It's different for girls
[Verse 2]
It's different for girls
They don't spit on the streets
They don't piss on the seat
They don't have to size up every person they meet
Or create an elite
Or poison the game so no one else can compete
They like chaos and mystery
And they like to combine them
Sometimes they act crazy
But that doesn't define them
It's different for girls
They're not expected to fight
They're expected to sit and take some lesser man's shit
Though it don't feel right
No, it don't feel right
[Chorus]
Though some women are demons, all of them are god
Though some demons are women
For every one psycho chick, there's ten thousand hateful pricks
[Bridge]
It's different
It's different
It's different
Yeah, it's different for girls
It's different for girls
gay

great! you guys all look so happy. nice to see. can't wait for the record
Any idea when the new album will be out?
+Death by Platypi August 16th
I interpretted the meaning of the song to be along the lines of: its better to be female than male and more of an ode to the generalizations and way women think. Yet women are still marginalized by the ever-present patriarchal force. The singer and party is ultimately celebrating what it would be like to live in a world void of the masculine confines of society. AKA This is a feminist song.
well said
For anyone who doesn’t know, Kevin Barnes, the singer, is bi and nonbinary!
legend
love them
love them
love them
Ya don't say
never heard of them before, I am old, lol, but saw that they were coming to town and did a little research! Love them!
_Viva! La Woman_
kevin barnes is so fucking adorable forever
My current fav song. Never would have heard it without that DJ Midnightt played it a few months ago on her "Garden of Good and Evil" radio show, WQFS in Greensboro, the Guilford College Radio Station. It gets air about once every two weeks here despite our towns' provincial nature. A Really Great Song!!
Way to win me back, I was upset about the band line up change (really loved the live band Dottie et al) but with this song I bought tickets to the next show.
they don't piss on the seat?? kevin have u ever been in the womens restroom
I have :)
They also shit all over the walls. Women reading: STOP HOVERING
generalizing
lol...they really do piss on the seat....
lol #bloodseattrickles
Have you ever been in a men's bathroom? Come on, women don''t piss on the seat like THAT
This guy is a freacking genius, love it!!!!
Reminds me of early of Montreal which is a very good thing! I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
This video really fits the song with such an upbeat amount of energy! Definitely my new jam for the summer.
This song fucking rocks-- everyone seriously needs to stop overanalyzing it. It's generally fairly accurate talking about girls, and it's got such a great beat. STOP THINKING AND ENJOY IT!!
This is a fun psych pop song about girls. It isn't supposed to be a politically correct scholarly article on what it means to be a female. Quit overanalyzing and enjoy being female while listening to the damn song. It's fucking funky.
Lizsagna but this is the Internet everyone needs to know my interpretation of the song. Clearly.
PREACH
As usual, STILL relevant, no matter when you listen to of Montreal...💋 (it's 2022 incidentally)
Obsessed with the chorus!
What a lil dose of happy :)
I thought I couldn't love Kevin Barnes more until I saw/heard this track. THANK YOU FOR SAYING THE TRUTH!!!!!!!
I'm not a believer in marriage, but I would marry you in a heartbeat. Ultimate Power Couple changing the world with our individuality and compassion for all!
OM are surely the nicest band
I have never felt so seen by a song.
This is so good. This absolutely went off in ways I didn't expect at all and I can't believe I didn't know about this song.
One day people will find this brilliant video and it will blow up and get billions of views
I absolutely looove love love this group and love that they made a song like this
loooove this band forever and ever they can do no wrong :)
my dumb ass thought this was an 80´s song! the instrumental reminds me of something that could be on regular show. It's amazing, just finding out it's from 2016. found it thru an utena amv
Kevin has really cool hair
Wow, this song sounds familiar, but of course it's new! Love it! Can't wait.

Seriously excited about the new album. Loving this video. Loving you.
The black guy in black and white stripes at 0:25, anyone else distracted by him? Everyone is having a blast, but his happiness is somehow contagious and hypnotic xD
Meme potential if you ask me.
OH MY GOD YES you're not the only one haha
The lyrics and bridge really save this song. I thought it was way too 'mainstream pop' sounding at first but dem lyrics
the kids are alright, this video makes me think that we're all going in a good direction
I am so happy for that kid!
Insightful song and aesthetic video
Yasss!
Stephen Winter killed it directing this!!!
This is actually a very thought provoking song. Whether you agree with all of it or not.
Love this song such great creativity with the lyrics!
such a queer anthem
Having a horrible day this song made it better!
This song gives me shivers bc I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Love it more than my life
this music video makes me so happy
Augh I really like this song, this and 'I'm just a girl' by No Doubt really motivate me.
Kevin is a charm
I WISH I WAS THERE MAN
Please come to Buenos Aires again!
My new anthem! ❤ wonderful
If we didn't live in such a debased age, this dude would be as big as Bowie. Sorry, that sounded a little sour and negative. But you know what I mean.
JohnColapinto it's true
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
Please.... He's a great musician, but he's nowhere near the level of bowie.
100% true. Don't Lie Me Die in America is another Of Montreal song that's pure Bowie
This looks like the greatest party EVER
so stoked for this album. neat work!
That party looks fun as hell
This video looks like a place where there is total acceptance and no judgement just fun times and good music.
It's amazing to see Of Montreal keeps surprising us!
We loved seeing you guys in San Antonio on April 7th!!!
babes 💕
the song makes me mourn for happiness
Kool!
I like this song a little better than the other one that explains how things are different for girls.
yea boi
I love everyone in this video!
Best video I ever seen❤️💛💚💙💜
