Otis, it’s really great to see these new camera angles where we can actually see your reactions to the person’s speaking. You do so little verbal intervention (which is rare and wonderful for interviews in general), and I’ve always wondered how you let the other person know you’re engaged in the conversation without actually saying anything. The body language is crystal clear!

my first guitar was an ES125 that my Dad gave me, it was stolen several years later so after over 50 years of missing it I found a super clean '56 and have had it for several years now

That's really interesting. In the early 70's I played with a trio in addition to my regular gig. I used a Gibson ES325 (yes, 25 LOL) with Gibson "red thread" flat wounds. I played bass and rhythm with it in standard and drop D tuning. For some reason Gibson flats came with red or orange thread on the ball end. I liked the red better. I would open all the packs of strings and take the reds, replacing them with orange. The local guitar shop owner just shook his head. 8) Peace --gary

I have the Guild version of this guitar. The first one produced in 1967 and it’s in closet condition. Untouched. I got it in a trade for a Partscaster I had my buddy wanted I paid 400 for. It plays beautifully and sounds just like that Gibson.

Thanks for featuring Kevin, one of my favorite artists - period. Full stop. The sound of that Gibson 125 is perfectly paired with his songs. I especially love the bell tone dripping with Tremolo (Strymon Flint) on his ballads. E. Nashville has so many of my favs - KG, Chuck Mead, Bob & Mike Delevante, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Todd Snider, Elizabeth Cook, and Derek Hoke. Jim Lauderdale rocks too! Great stuff!

My father got an ES-125 as a high school graduation present in 1953. Bought from a music store in Meridian, MS. We still have that guitar in the family. He traded it to a professional guitarist in the 60's for a Telecaster. The guy came back a few days later wanting his Tele back and Dad let him trade back.
Some time in 70's Dad had a guy do a clean up and setup on the guitar and when he got it back he was a little bit upset. The guy had over sprayed the guitar with some high gloss clear coat that was not asked for. In the long run maybe it was OK - to this day the old 125 has no lacquer checking; and it looks new from a distance.

Another excellent interview! Love the back stories. Also, the song sounds great. As soon as I started listening to it I thought of the old Bartlesville Oklahoma, Austin Texas sound from the late 60s - mid 80s. Not sure why it popped in my head. Love it. Keep on keeping on Kevin. Good stuff!

I love it. It's not about how technically you play guitar if the guitar pairs right with how well you write and sing songs. It's the accenting and the marriage of what you're doing. I love Kevin's formula and relate to him 100%. To "song makers!" (The right instrument and you). Cheers to you guys!

I just love these instrument videos! These 125s are very special to me. I have a 1952 model that my grandfather bought new, he later sold it to my dad because my dad fell in love with it and couldn’t live without it. It was his main guitar throughout his life. When he passed in 2016 he passed onto to me. It is one of my absolute top guitars in my collection. I LOVE playing it. Great video Otis. Keep up the great work! Thank you.

I've got one from 1961, it's my baby, the dusty wooden sound when unplugged is what I love the most but, plugging it in with a little(or more) overdrive makes it a great tight rhythm guitar.

I have an L48.. keep intending to stick a cable-cam in the body to see if there's a serial number. Anytime I bump into one of these 50s/60s archtops they're usually around a thousand, unless they're in superb condition. Mine is a restoration project, but still playable & worth putting money into. I'm a small player, & the body on these types are huge, so parlors are more my speed. But for blues & jazz, you can't go wrong with archtops.

    • @musicofanatic

Most of the folks I know with a nice 1950s ES-125 paid no more than $500, most, a lot less. The 125 is a budget Gibson (original list price $125) and Gibson made a shit-ton of 'em. Sorry for anyone who has paid the ransom that the current inflated vinnidge guitar market asks for these guitars. Disdained by many "vinnidge-snobs", any guitar player who allows their soul to be inspired by their instrument knows the worth of a good pre-1964 125, and can easily discern the difference between this and the current Godin "copy" or similar.
