  • Lindsay demos how to sow and grow our weather-tolerant Yard Long Asian bean variety 'Noodle King.' She shows how to train the vigorous vines to climb a trellis, where they bear amazingly long, slender beans, delicious for a long season sautés and stir-fries.

I grew these this year in our very cool summer (it stayed around 68'F / 20'C all summer) and this was definitely too cold for these. My May sowings only started flowering in mid-August (3 months / almost 90 days to first flower), most of the flowers fell off and the leaves of the plants went yellow from cold-stress. I wrapped the whole structure they were climbing on in fleece and with the boosted temperature they greened up so pretty sure they yellowed from the cold. It's now the end of August and the first beans (in the fleece-wrapped pot) are just setting and growing now so hopefully we'll have a few to taste soon. But if anyone wants to grow these in a cool summer, I recommend doing it in a polytunnel or greenhouse rather than outside.

They don't seem to have much of a string down the middle, pretty even to cut.
