Secondly it would be beneficial for tourists if u can make them learn basics, ie how to get sim? How to travel and study maps on metro. How to pay thru Alipay and cash related informations. I'm very puzzled why he always stays in hotel. I was also a foreign tourist in Shanghai a few years ago and it was much cheaper to stay in local or international hostels. Shanghai is an international city so there should be many options for travellers, and some very nice hostels. Hostels give a more exciting experience because you get to interact with both domestic and international travellers and learn more about their country/city they from.
when you are 2 people, then Hotel room is a better and cheaper option.

Hostel prices were still cheap then, about 60CNY and I was like "wow, so cheap!" and it was basic but clean. Those days are probably gone. I think these days as China's first tiered cities become more advanced, hotel and hostel prices also becomes inflated. But in the 2nd/3rd tiered cities should still be very affordable. If you are still in eastern side coastal China, I recommend that you go Shenzhen or Guangzhou try the driverless bus (can google online for info). Yunnan in southwest China is a very beautiful province you might not want to miss if you still have time. China has many picturesque landscapes that I notice you didn't visit in those provinces that you went. You've merely just touch and go. I will be travelling to China next spring when flowers are in full bloom in the meadows and fields.
