      They are very cuddly and can be a bit more nippy once they get into the hormonal phase but great companions. Mine is very energetic and the typical 'clown' personality for birds. Though I wouldn't call them that quiet xD. When he wants to yell at the birds outside or scream while he plays with his toys...he screams all right. He can be quiet for a good amount of time but talks when he has to say something. Would still recommend personally cockatiels over a GCC for a starter bird just because of that nippiness even though I adore the personality of my GCC. Always depends on what you are looking for in a bird of course!

    Everything you said is spot on. A great description of my GCC Milton. The only thing I would add is that somewhere around 2 or 3 years old, they go through a difficult adolescent period where they get nippy and aggressive for a little while. I share this because so many people will remove or give up on their conure at this time. Not realizing that this is only a phase they go through and they will go back to their sweet cuddly self if this period is handled correctly.

    • @megsutube1815
      @megsutube1815 Před 2 lety +11

      The best way to handle this phase is to give your bird lots of attention when it's being good and zero attention when it bites. You must act as though the bite didn't hurt or he will bite more. If you get bit, put the bird down and walk away. Keep the attitudeh of no attention as long as. the bird is biting. I have s bird room, so I close the door. Don't use the cage for a time out or they will see their cage negatively. The time you spend positively is the most important. Play with them, cuddle them and give it treats. As it realizes you are their friend and that you don't play when they bite, they will become a wonderful companion and lots of fun.

      Bird accent is a good way of putting it. About one in ten times it can be distinct. Occasionally, he can do the gimme kiss, smacking sound and thank you clearly. If there was any benefit of lockdown it was all of the time together. The harder you try, the smarter he gets.

    I have researched SO MANY videos to become better educated on breeds of birds. This is hands down the best overview! Not to mention, extremely educational in a package that is short and condensed for younger researchers who may or may not be considering adding a bird to their family. This reminds me of the popular Animal Planet videos that condense the main topics when considering breeds of dogs or cats.

    I've had Sky (Pineapple GC) since she was 4 months old. She is almost 5 now. I cannot imagine life without her. It surprised me how affectionate she is. She gives me birdy kisses all the time. Plus, she rubs the side of my face with hers constantly. She says half a dozen phrases like "I love you" "What are you doing?" "Pretty bird." ......etc. She learned all those phrases in the first two years. Since then, she has not spoken anything new so there seems to be a critical period for learning speech.

  • @gaaralvr4695

    My GCC has a lot of attitude, it’s pretty funny. She is well-behaved for the most part, but sometimes she’s not in the mood to step up. When I’m trying to put her back in her cage and she doesn’t want to go, she WILL fight me. Either biting the heck out of my hand or being aggressive towards the perch I want her to step up on.
    She can squawk quite a lot for attention. When I shower she squawks up a storm. But when she’s quiet it’s like she’s not even there.
    She really loves to just be with me and likes to lean against me or snuggle my neck and fall asleep. It kills me (with cuteness) every time.

  • @robin8966
    @robin8966 Před 2 lety +5

    This was one of the videos that really helped me narrow down my pick for parrots! I'm now the owner of an extremely clingy pineapple gcc. He's about 9 months now and I got him at 3 months. Your video is pretty spot on, but I will say that from my own experience and what I've read, the male gcc's tend to be more territorial and nippier than the females in terms of a "friendliness scale".
    Despite my best abilities, Lichi has become very territorial of me around other people, even people he had previously been fine being handled by in his earlier months. He immediately goes on the defensive around other people, and though he's more used to my housemates (who's he's been introduced to and handled by from the first few weeks of bringing him home), he still gets aggressive and will bite if they get too close to him now. Right now, he's also become much nippier with even me, though I'm hoping its seasonal and due to his molting period. He's still 100% attached to me and yes, he's extremely cuddly and affectionate. But he will also bite me out of nowhere unprovoked or get angry about the most random things. Again, hoping he's just irritated from his molt and will soon get over this phase. I like to joke now that he wakes up every morning and chooses violence.
    Someone else here mentioned that gcc's are notorious for getting into things they shouldn't and should have constant supervision outside of their cage. That they're smart enough to be disobedient and I 100% agree with this! Lichi is very smart, and he picks up his training insanely quickly. But he also has, as mentioned in this video, "big bird personality". He will willfully ignore me or be disobedient like the sass master he is, and he 100% knows what he's doing. It's a roadblock I've run into in his training that I'm trying to overcome, because he will learn commands and tricks quickly, but will conveniently "forget" everything if he's not in the mood. This has made recall training difficult because he will only respond during training sessions but not outside of it unless he's in the mood. Definitely a huge personality in a small body.
    But overall, I adore him and I don't regret getting him. As in the video, he's very quiet! He mainly makes quiet murmuring/chirping noises around me, but not constantly. The only time he screeches is when he's surprised, there's loud noise (like loud arguing/shouting matches in a movie) or him screeching because I left the room without him (gcc's are drama queens). But it's not often and I'd vouch for gcc's being great apartment pets. Very cuddly, attached to your hip, won't let you out of their sight. They will want to follow you everywhere you go, even just to take a dump. He's overall a very sweet and affectionate bird (only to me). I'm his walking, breathing jungle gym as he just crawls all over my body, plays with my hands or hair, climbing over my face, etc. Even as I'm typing this he's weaving himself through my fingers and rolling around.🤣
    I will say though, since this video was released, we're all aware that costs of parrots have drastically increased from recession and an overall shortage of parrots. Your video says an average of $300-$400, but when I was shopping around in January of 2022, the average cost for gcc's was $500-600 in the USA. Color mutations (turquoise, pineapples, yellow-sided, etc) were even higher, in the $600-900 range. Lichi is a pineapple gcc and I got him for $800 from my local bird store in NJ. I will say that Lichi was a bit on the higher end for pineapples since there were breeders down south selling their pineapple clutches for around $600, but the cost to ship them pretty much balanced out the cost of getting one locally (around $150-200 to ship). But I've seen $900 pineapples here too. I saw suncheek mutations going for $1000-1200.

    And the honesty with which you talk about strengths and weaknesses, pro and cons, based on your personal experience. You make very clear videos and you are very funny nice!!
    I like your videos and hope to see other breed described.
    PS. the green cheek conure seems to me a parrot among the most interesting for me ...In theory I would like to find, if it existed, a parrot (but also a non-parrot bird) that was mainly: 1-calm and never screaming aloud 2. fond and loving. 3 who loves physical contact.

    They did a survey back in 2018, and found that out of all the conures species, it was the FEMALE GCC, yes female, that spoke the most words, out of all the conure species.
    My GCC, she was generally quiet, but when she felt safe and relaxed, she talked up a storm. She would speak in phrases, then mix words together to make legible new phrases. She was extremely smart. It’s not just mimicking, but actual cognizant speech.
    She wasn’t super snuggly like other GCC, but very sweet. She wanted to be around me at all times. She learned the phrase “Are you okay?,” “Is she ok?,” and would ask this after something dramatic/bad/eventful would happen. She would then make a point to comfort me or the person/flock member that needed the reassurance.
    She unfortunately passed away recently. Me and my Sun are in the process of grieving. I know I will need to find my Sun Skittles, a new sister, but my Verde could never be replaced. There will never be another one like her.

I have had mine about 18 months now, a sweet bird overall but the only issue is the over clingy behaviour, if either of us leave the room she’ll follow otherwise she’ll call out which is pretty loud, luckily we don’t have close neighbours, she’ll often screech in the mornings too but not for long. I’d love to get her company like a budgie but for the reasons you mention we’ve been unsure, would hate to see her attack them or remove its toes!

    • @Fivesaflock
      @Fivesaflock  Před 3 lety

      Your gc probably calls out because it's trained you and associates screaming when you leave as you coming back to give her attention. I would first recommend trying to work on that first and breaking that association by ignoring it, then giving attention when she quiets down. That will associate quietness as bringing you back. Getting multiple birds to be buddies with each other can generally lead to poor behavior towards owners and will generally lead to birds being nippy to owners and preferring other birds for company.

    My green cheek speaks clearly. It depends on the type of voice you are using. If you speak quietly to them, he/she will talk quietly. I used different tones in my voice and he speaks back in the same tone in their voice and is completely clear.

    You haven't met my GC Link, lol. One of the reasons I got a green cheek was because the research I did led me to believe they're cuddlier birds. So naturally Link can't sit still for more than 30 seconds, let alone long enough to be cuddled, haha. He won't even let me help preen his face. Oh and he's a screamer too, every time something goes by the window or anyone goes up or down the stairs; and those screams are loud... He's also a chewer, on hands, my desk, my mousepad, cords, everything, so I've got to watch him like a hawk. But I love him anyhow. He is super trainable and food motivated, so that has been fun.
    Also, where does one get a GC sized flight cage for $60?!

    I would like to get 2 gcc as my first parrots so that they can have company beyond the 1-2 hours a day out with me. I dont mind if they are more cuddly with their friend then they are with me. Do you think that they would become jealous/aggressive if I try to interact with one (just like to step up on my finger)?

    • @Fivesaflock
      @Fivesaflock  Před 3 lety +4

      Having multiple birds is generally not recommended if you're a beginner as they will tend to favor each other over developing a relationship with you if you don't know what you're doing. I know tons of stories of people getting 2 birds for the same reason and the birds end up hating the owner's guts. Fact is, if you get enough toys and entertainment for the bird, it will handle itself alone no problem. so don't let that be a huge factor in your decision making.

      @@Fivesaflock Yes, these little birds are more demanding than most cats and dogs since they get so emotionally attached to their owner. Especially when you only have one.
