  • The commentary by the young film maker back in 1983 who thought that the 4600, 4700 and 4800 series trams were "rebuilt Peter Witts" is not correct... thanks to those who pointed this out (see comments). Enjoy the film anyway :)

Italy, such an underrared tram country. Probably some of the most beautiful and technically advanced tram cars have been built there, and many of them are still in operation today.

Unfortunately all the small lines were closed down during the 50-60-70 and still in the last years some of the interurban lines in Milano were closed. Anyway, Milano still have a large and good tram networks.

4600, 4700 and 4800 series were not rebuilt from 2 or 3 Peter Witt trams. 4600 and 4700s (the shorter ones) were manufactured in the 50s exactly as they look in this footage. 4800s were built from two trams (5200 and 5300 series, built in the 50s) plus a middle segment in the 70s, so again not from 1928 Peter Witts.

The commentary is from 1983 and I must have "best guessed" because the information wasn't easily available back then. Thank you Marco for corrrecting and adding this information to my post.

Top!!!!

Thank you for your comments. For the lines and numbers of the trams you can try pausing the video to see better... sometimes it works!

I don't understand why he keeps saying "rebuilt Peter Witts". Those cars where not rebuilt. Original Peter Witts are still rolling today.
Of course they underwent maintenance works and refitting but they were not rebuilt.

You're correct of course, but please bear in mind that 39 years ago in 1983 the young film maker wasn't an expert on Milan rolling stock nor was there the Internet to check these details...

Have to say that calling them "american looking" sounds odd to me, they've been roaming my hometown for 90 years so they're the most milanese thing we have!!

Hi, those trams were built in Italy based on the Peter Witt trams of Cleveland. By the way, the film and the commentary was made in 1983. Thanks for watching :)
