You wont get hate for it from the Tool Army because a lot of Tool fans felt a similar way first couple of listens. Honestly this one took me a whole lotta listens for it to click. Now imo its one of the best things they have done. This will be a common theme in the comments.

Thanks for just being honest about it instead of trying to appease us Tool fans. This song is one that had to grow on most of us over time. Only the most technically minded of reactors would pick up on a lot of the instrumental merit of this song on the first listen.
Unless you just straight up hated it, come back to it now and then and I think you'll find that somewhere along the line you started anticipating some of the riffs and melodies and before you've realized it, the song just clicks.

    @Andy-nl8uq Před 2 lety +13

Your reaction to this is exactly why I recommend this as one of the last tool songs people should listen to as new listeners. It is a really weird song, and needs multiple listens. To me I needed to get to a point of knowing what was coming musically before I could really 'get' the song as it flips about all over the place. Others have said it... Put it in the playlist and listen to it occasionally (even just in the background). Eventually you'll start singing odd lyrics and anticipating the buildup to the crescendo towards the end of the song. I couldn't stand the song when TTD came out, it's now one of my faves (even if it is frickin weird). Great reaction and thanks for the honesty 👍

Babe...you're great , and just proved to all of us again...you're real......the whole sequence is just based on a heavy acid trip.....funny as hell.......notable things though as I consider you the Bass and Drums girl....Danny absolutely kills in this song, for the Tech geeks they know he unleashes everything in this....his pads, his electronic Tabla, all his gadgets, at least a dozen different odd and impossible to figure out time changes and the entire time Justin (Bass) is right there...I always imagined them giggling as this was coming together, they have openly admitted to "substance" use periods in their career...."like that time Dave floated away" You should have been much further into your Tool Baptism before they fed you this Kool Aid.....I voted for Pushit BTW...but als, I believe this wil land with you in the future.....once again Stay you, Stay badass

  • @fenolitto
    @fenolitto Před 2 lety +24

Yeah, screw anyone who has expectations of your reaction. Especially for this song. I think most people have a difficult time with this the first go 'round. The sudden drop into the pace of the lyrics. The multiple stylistic choices of the band. Etc.
I will say that the payoff for this one however is really amazing once you can 'get it'. The late build and drop into "Overwhelmed" to me is one of my singular favorite moments of any Tool song.
There's just a LOT to digest, and it's not easy to get a sense of the song with only one listen.
Or maybe that's my excuse for it. LOL
Keep being you, and keeping your honesty out there. :D:D:D

Completely agree with everything you say here. I loved the drumming in the first listen, but the rest was a bit out there for me. Now, I love this song. And that drop in at “overwhelmed” is to my ears just a perfect 35 seconds of music.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the point of the song kinda seems like to overwhelm the senses of the listener. Almost give them a sense of sensory overload, leaving them to sit back with a blank stare on their face as they try and fail to process everything going on.

I've always just found this track hilarious, Tool never get enough credit for their sense of humor which you find sprinkled in all thru their discography. This one isn't meant to be analyzed just enjoyed. I think part of the reason it's so different is it was thrown together spur of the moment rather than by their normal meticulous process & you see that in the awesome musicianship as well where they just let go freely, multiple rifts, etc and seemingly all over. I do love this 1 whenever feel in the mood, but no not an every day one for me.

I really enjoyed your reaction since it seemed so honest and understandable. It’s not far removed from my own when I first heard it.
I was at a Tool concert a couple weeks ago. I’m no doubt a fan but it didn’t happen overnight. Tool clicked for me when I started listening to them not only with headphones, but with undivided attention since they are a complex band to listen to with their polyrhythms and musical interludes.
I didn’t appreciate Rosetta Stoned as I currently do, when I first heard it and I ignored it for a long time before giving it a go again. After several listens it began to click and I love it now. It’s one of the songs that demos the instrumental genius of the band. Additionally, as with a lot of their more complex tunes, a single tempo is maintained throughout the song. It can be amazing to listen to them change the rhythm around the same tempo/beat throughout. Quite often the intro to songs introduce you to the tempo/beat.
As to lyrics. Maynard and his lyrics add another layer with the music being more related than typical of a lot of music. So one complements the other. Listening to Tool music without the lyrics or vice versa makes for only part of the experience. They are a very special band I gotta say.

This song takes some time to marinade and the more you listen to it the more profound and hilarious it becomes. The Tool army, which I'm part of, push the songs they've grown to love (over a LOOOOONG time of listening) rather than allowing reactors the time to build the "love of Tool foundation" that's necessary for a few of their songs. I haven't listened to Lauren's reaction to this yet, but from everything she's revealed through these videos, I can't imagine she's going to love this song. It's just too much. The climax of the song, I agree, is one of, if not, the most moving section of any Tool songs, to me. Right there with No Quarter's "locked in place where no one goes" through the ending... It took me quite a few listens, basically besides the 2 radio tracks, to the rest of the album as well. It took a little more for Rosetta Stoned and right in 2 and now they're my 2 favorites songs off this album. Which happens to be my favorite, along with all the rest of them. So, pretty much the first reaction you'd expect from a first-time listener would be "wtf did I just hear?" Most likely Tool's most chaotic song that was loosely based on an alien abduction story from a close friend of theirs.... it's much more of a conceptual story than just a formulated "rock song"
Also take in mind, the band writes all the music first and Maynard then will react, write the vocals and lyrics... so, I'm kind of curious to see the look on his face when the band handed this too him and said, "ok, here you go... sing over this!" lol

Personally, I love this song because of it's difference from the normal structure (of even Tool songs, to say nothing of other music), the concept (aliens choosing an Area 51 crazy for our savior/their prophet), and the killer musicianship of this (and every) Tool track. Keep up the good work, I'll still keep watching :-)

i love this song. The humor and the references to .....so many things. I can understand why people dont like this song. It is all over the place but I personally love it. Its like the band members said "hey yall remeber when Dave floated away? Lets make a song about it." lol so many references to everything. lol I love the way they pull off humor.

The drumming and guitar work on this one is pretty good. But, yea, I gotta be in the mood for Rosetta Stoned. It's not on the top 10 playlist or anything. I will say, in the context of the album, it works really well, and that's common with Tool. They have great songs, but they have really great albums.

It took me many listens to get this one, way back when, I didn't even have lyrics so I had NO clue what was going on, but that Bass and Drum orgasm in the middle with the psychodelic screetchy cat guitar just fills me every time :)

when you listen to this song enough, you’re gonna eventually pick up on the rhythms in the more hard to follow parts. when you finally do, it puts a huge smug smile on your face for having finally cracked it.

That opening tone reminds me of The Joker's theme from The Dark Knight. Makes me wonder if Hans Zimmer is a Tool fan.

Great Review as usual!! Someone else here said its a fan favorite, TOOL candy which I can agree with. However, like you said in your review there are some pretty epic moments in this song. And the Maynard gif/break is hilarious!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Love your honesty!!! Nothing beats the truth.

Much respect for your honest !!! Long time tool fan and this song has an epic moment towards the end and it’s facetious…. But not one to listen to over and over….. probably the song with the lowest play count for me of their full songs. Love that you give the songs a second chance/listen.

I believe that most of the people who watch your channel (me included) watch you because you ARE genuine and honest. It's what I like about you. You're a gem in a world of lies. You're obviously an intelligent and thoughtful Human. Again, a rare thing on this planet of vacuous lesser mortals. As long as you are true to yourself, you will have true subscribers who respect your opinions and observations. Keep up the good work. 👍😎👍💙

Private Lauren. Part of being a part of the Tool Army will not always be Picking Daisies and frolicking about the meadow. You have just went through tumultuous training. Where others have failed to get through this task you however have succeeded. Congratulations you are now promoted to private first class. Dismissed.

The song tells the story of a DMT trip. The music matching the wild ride but crazy eye opening experience people have when using DMT. I don’t do drugs but the stories from people who have are fascinating. They all follow the same script and people can’t even explain what they really saw. They call it the spirit molecule.

Shit all of us in the original tool army retired with this album. It had special moments and this tracks seemed to me that it was Triad like in concept. Like a bunch of songs melded into one great instrumental and Maynard basically is fully just utility vocals like an actor in a film but it pushed the barrier. A lot of beautiful moments in this song. The lyrics are typical and funny knowing. I think it’s exactly what it was meant to be. Tool from top to bottom is one the greatest bands of all time. The talent up and down is dominate and works like a well oiled machine. This song I look at as more of a instrumental with a scat audio boot about my friend Mikey. Sounds like him. Typical

I remember being the exact same way when I heard this song for the 1st time. So uncertain and thinking it was an okay song, and now over the years as I’ve heard it more it grew on me w/ every listen. When you get to understand the storytelling of the lyrics and the amazing musicianship, this has become my favorite Tool track. Anytime I think of Tool this is one of the 1st songs to pop in my head. Maybe you’ll get into it w/ more listens or maybe you won’t and that’s okay. We’re all born w/ different personalities and tastes, that’s what makes us unique.

I think artists need to have a playful side. I like that Tool being such a serious band can drop something silly like this, now and then. 'Message from harry manback' or 'Die Eier von Satan' (which is a German cookie recipe) from Aenima were similarly goofy tracks.

This is the first song on my Tool play list when its time to clean the house. Lipan Conjuring is the first part of this trilogy before Lost Keys. My interpretation: Ayahuasca ceremony, ends up in hospital, tries to explain his experiences. This, Vicarious & Jambi were my favourites first play through. Honesty is the best policy :) prefer it over a reactor kissing ass for likes, and appreciate it more.
Looking forward to when you get to their earlier stuff. Paul was a beast on Bass too.
    Thanks Lauren.

You won’t get as much flack for it as you think, it took me a while before I actually like this song, it’s the complexity of the musicianship and understanding their sense of humor that makes you enjoy it. Third Eye took me a while to get into too. Keep doing you, I’d rather someone be honest

I can say that this song, from first listen, was one of those TOOL songs that just spoke to me probably because of it's weirdness. It is one of my go to songs along with Vicarious, 4 degrees, and Invincible. That being said, this particular song is "advanced Tool listening" and if you are new fan, I can see why it would possibly dissuade from further listens.
I've always said that TOOL has a magnum opus song on each album since Undertow (AEnima - Third Eye, Lateralus - Lateralus, 10,000 Days - Rosetta Stoned) except for Fear Innoculum which is 6 Magnum Opuses (or Magna Opera) 3 interludes, and almost 5 minutes of Danny being Danny.
I appreciate your honesty and understand that because of the width and breadth of TOOL, not every song is for everybody. You do you sis!
