  • Forty years after the Alexanders left, the Ontario Hockey League is back in Brantford. They had to make some upgrades to the Civic Centre, mostly for modern broadcasting, as the Bulldogs moved from Hamilton. Look, this arena is a far cry from the NHL-sized First Ontario Centre but it gives you what you need for junior hockey. I'd describe it as a "classic" feel and if you've ever been to a game in the QMJHL, you've seen an arena like this. They're making good use of their space here, the fans are filling the seats every night, and these upgrades will get them through until a new arena is built.

If Brantford makes a playoff push the atmosphere in that building will be electric.

Saw you at the Civic centre yesterday. I am a regular listener of the podcast and this is the first OHL season I am following. The podcast got me clued in on junior hockey in Canada. Thanks for all the content.

@@TheOHLPodcast Oh, would most definitely love to say thanks personally. And the bulldogs have been a fun team to follow, win or lose.
As of now, I am definitely very interested in junior hockey, even more so than NHL which I would like to get into eventually :)

It reminds me a lot of Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

I’d love it if the added more seats and kept the old girl going. Maybe adding 500 seats and a few boxes on the north and south end. I know the roof would have to be raised but it was done in Kitchener and Peterborough. I know they can’t expand on the east or west sides because of the new restaurant on one side and Casino property on the other.

I was thinking that same thing! And I’ve talked to other Brantford residents and they had similar ideas. Maybe under the rows of seats they could add some extra bathrooms too and maybe expand the elevator near the restaurant up to the upper concourse. The Civic Centre has a lot of potential for more expansions, and I hope it gets brought up at the public meeting for the new arena. Even adding an extra box on the opposite side of the press box would increase the capacity by the hundreds. If they expand on the Peterborough Centre and the Aud, they can expand on the Civic Centre.

I was at the game tonight. I was cheering on the Bulldogs, but the Rangers have been my favourite OHL team since I was a kid.
I’ve been coming to the Civic Centre since around the time I discovered Rangers and the arena is honestly my favourite. Like you said, it has this classic feel to it and the Bulldogs have really made this arena feel like home.
Honestly, the atmosphere at the game tonight was electric and the game itself was absolutely wild. GGs to you and the Rangers, and keep up the great content, Mike!

The concept drawings for the new proposed arena look amazing.
City has said the new arena would be built right next to the civic centre and the CC would still remain open. Makes no sense to me.

They should just keep the Civic Centre, there’s plenty of room for Boxes, elevators, stairwells and a bigger lobby. That’s all the old barn really needs, for the most part it’s a great spot to see a junior hockey game.

What the Aud means to Kitchener is what the Civic Centre means to the people of Brantford. Lots of history from that old barn, from Wwf, to the Alexanders, to the Pittsburg Penguins first exhibition game against the Philadelphia flyers being played there. Wayne Gretzky met Gordie Howe for the first time in the old auditorium which is now the restaurant downstairs. In Brantford we’re thankful for this cathedral and I’d like to see them continue to expand on the arena like they did with the Aud.

@@sensoryoverload6809 For sure, neighbour. I didn't mean any disrespect at all. I love old stories like that. I grew up in the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. Hockey school, mini sticks in the basement in the intermissions at Ranger games, highschool football games under the lights at Centennial Stadium, playing hickey on the big ice and the twin pads, working for the concessions for the Ranger games and concerts, Pearl Jam.. The Tragically Hip.. Man, I hope Brantford keeps the Bulldogs and expands that great old arena. This country can't forget our past. Peace, Merry Christmas!
