- Frank Cohn was nine years old when his favorite teacher began wearing a Nazi uniform, classmates sang Nazi songs, and he was chased by a gang of Hitler Youth. Frank outran them. It was 1934 in Germany.
Four years later, Frank’s father went to New York City to secure an affidavit and the family reunited there on October 30, 1938-ten days before antisemitic violence erupted across Germany in an event known as Kristallnacht. “The timing of our escape was indeed a miracle,” said Frank.
After the US entered World War II, Frank was drafted, sworn in as an American citizen, and served in an intelligence unit after the Army learned he could speak German.
Hear Holocaust survivor Frank Cohn’s experiences in his own words recorded on October 19, 2022. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion featuring a live interview between journalist Bill Benson and a survivor and including questions from the audience, available on the Museum’s CZcams channel.

Hall of cause didn't happen
That's so amazing! He's your grandfather? ❤ He's such a sweetheart of a man. I loved hearing his story. Bless him 🙏
@@Joebilly15684are you mentally ill? There's so much proof! And you can't even spell. 😂
As the granddaughter of a Holocaust survivor--the only survivor in his family--I watch as many of these first-person accounts as possible. It is an honor to be able to learn from courageous people, such as Mr. Cohn.
I am a gypsie from the uk I have learned to live with prejudice all my life, but nothing compared to you god bless you and your family, what a life you have lived
My dad, Avery Rogers also went to Ft. Benning, Georgia as a youth from Berkeley Ca. he went on later to manage the US Geological Survey’s western state region. Both of you embody the dignity, courage and optimism of our Greatest Generation. so glad you got out and survived to tell the true story of the Holocaust. ❤️
No words. So glad he survived and thank you for your service.
thank you for your testimony, Frank. what a delightful person you seem to be and I wish you good health and love for the rest of your days.
Frank Cohn is a treasure, both for his family & country. Amazing man and grateful for this platform to share his story, directly from the man himself ❤
This is my second or third time hearing Mr Cohn, and I enjoy hearing him more each time. When he gets to the part where they got out of dodge in time, I feel the same little thrill inside. His mom sounds like she was awesome. It breaks my heart when I hear the testimonies of the survivors whose families had the option to go and debated leaving but either waited too long or someone in the family decided against it thinking it would all pass.
Thank you for sharing your story, Mr. Cohn. I could have sat and listened to you for several more hours.
I love Mr. Cohn's spirit and verve, especially that twinkle in his eye when he talks about his youthful joy at dining at Horn & Hardart! I'm happy he survived and that he is here sharing his stories with us all. Thank you!!
Such a handsome man, survivor, strong human being, precious soul...thank you for your personal story. It means a lot.
Excellent discussion.....thank you
I only wish more people would watch these, and other testimonials. They are so important, and their voices deserve to be be heard.
It’s wonderful to see that childlike spirit. All first accounts and second and third generations they are so strong, so amazing. You hear the numbers of people, but to see it live I cannot begin to imagine.
Thank you for service Frank and great lesson in our history. Sincerely yours from Richard Abbenbroek.

I live his description from a child’s eyes
What an amazing gentleman!! Colonel Frank Cohn’s residence is in my home area of Fairfax County, VA (Fairfax Times January 2022). So glad this extraordinary man’s family decided to leave rather than stay hoping “it would blow over”.
