  • Painting like Hilma af Klint is painting abstract, at least her later work. Hilma af Klint is an unknown pioneer of abstract art. The reason for it is that Hilma af Klint made paintings for the future because she thought her artwork wouldn’t be understood in her time. More than 20 years after her death, in 1968, the public could see Hilma a Klint abstract art at an exhibition. Hilma af Klint The Ten Largest is a series of paintings I like and got me painting in her style. I didn’t copy her work but took what I picked up, painting in symbols around a theme. Female artists painters are common these days, but in her time they were rare. Luckily for us history gave us more women artists or female painters.

I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

I was so surprised when I first saw her work in a class on female artists. Her work was so far ahead of it's time. We had to work in her style. Not an easy task. Thank you for this

I just took up acrylic painting for the first time (age 55) a few weeks ago. Before that I've always enjoyed working with mosaic tile, decorative concrete, stone, and I'm really good at painting walls and coming up with an interesting color scheme. I started painting art mostly because I was redecorating my house during Covid and didn't want to spend tons of money on things to hang on my walls. "I can do this myself!" I said. And yours were the first videos I started watching. I began by being inspired by interesting area rugs I've seen online. Thank you for the encouragement and for helping me to believe that my paintings don't have to be perfect, just interesting to me.

Hi Pamela, thanks. And thanks for sharing your story. It's the hammer on the nail 'your paintings just have to be interesting to you'. When you find joy in painting, or mosaic, or whatever material that works for you, I'm just happy to hear. I know what a tremendous joy it brings me to be able to express myself and anyone joining me on that road makes me happier. Albert

Hello Albert - thank you for this different demonstration. I've only recently discovered Hilma au Klint . It's hard to think that she had a show in the 60s and yet she and all of the women artists were ignored in my art history classes. Beautiful, ethereal work. I missed seeing student work. If I were to do a painting a la au Klint, my theme would be peace and discord.

Thanks Carol, unfortunately art history books and classes as well are given or written from a white male perspective. Make your painting as a silent protest. It's never too late. Things are changing for the better, I see processes moving forward, but still 2 steps forward, 1 step back. Dreaming though. Albert

Hello Albert - I appreciate your series and your style of presentation. I found it most interesting when you "deconstruct" a style. For example. I came to your series via Fabienne Verdier. In that video you gave your audience clues to understand how Fabienne constructs her paintings. The composition video was also very informative as well as others. Also fascinating to see your students' work. I am less interested when the goal of the video is simply to watch you paint.

Hi Weave TheRing, thanks for long comment. What you like in the videos is what I like to put in. My painting is my homework to explain what I want to tell or show.
But keep in mind I show how I look at art and it doesn't have to be the right, official or scientific way. Bye, Albert

It's great fun and I'm learning a lot about each artist I study.

Hello Albert I can so relate to this kind of abstract painting, being a lover of nature myself I am so drawn to pastels, and love the shapes and colors she has blended so well together. Well I am going to give it a try, as having always painted in watercolor and oils acrylics are a whole new ball game, looks like fun. Just a question I have, as I see you paint on drawing paper and use a pouring medium to mix paint sometime when needed. If wanting to sell paintings then should canvas be used instead of paper? Would so appreciate your advise on this. And thank you for all your great post and wonderful information.

    • @ImperfectPaintings

Hi Maria, thanks for the loooong comment, I love to read things like this. Yes, Hilma makes wonderful art. So far I made some 150 paintings for my channel, imagine those on a canvas, I wouldn't have space left to live in my house 😉. Selling (your) art is a different ballgame. Works on canvas are sold, just as works on paper. Oil pant just as acrylics. I never sold one, it's not my goal. Works on paper have to be glued to a base, professionally, this will take serious money. I have one painting on paper framed on my walls, it took some € 300 to frame my € 0,30 paper and € 2,00 paint effort. It looks great though. Hope this helps. Loved talking to you, have a great day, Albert

Hi Albert, well every painter have his or her own style. I found it difficult to find my own style! my question is how as a new painter we can establish or own style or what is the process on establish our own style in painting, acrylic watercolour or any other mediums. thanks, Lui

    • @ImperfectPaintings
      @ImperfectPaintings  Před 5 lety +2

Hi Lui, thanks for your reaction. Developing your own style is a longer process, that can't be done overnight. Most people order a 'red wine' in a restaurant. Without naming the country of origin, the chateau or winery or year it was produced. The people who do have developed their taste for wine over the years.
My advice is to paint lots of different things, with different materials. Take some classes nearby. But especially: have fun. And go to museums, learn about art and see lots of videos on CZcams. Try out what inspires you. And have fun making lots of imperfect paintings. I hope this helps. Keep painting, Albert

      Hi Lui,
If you do more of what is close to your heart you will get better in the end. I have been painting for 10 years and paint like other painters. It helps me to close in on what I like most (abstract and landscape) and by studying work of others I learn a lot too. And I make my videos about my journey 😁. I don't know what my style is, or I do, i like to mess around without a specific style. I'm oké with that. Bye, Albert
