- This time at the Quick Speed Shop I'm unboxing and reviewing the Maddox MA10-1 ball joint press tool from Harbor Freight. I have to press out and install new ball joints in my 1995 Ford F250 OBS truck and this the perfect opportunity to try out a new tool. Let's see if it works!
Harbor Freight Maddox MA10-1
Cost: $89.99

Auto tech here, for everyone talking about the threads stripping or binding, you need to GREASE the threads of the driver with a nice thick coating to reduce friction and binding. Also cleaning your tools after each use especially around caustic fluids will add to their longevity.
Thank you
I have this press and it got the job done for me
Another good review of tools used in a home shop to keep your vehicles on the road. Thanks for the info.
👍
Nice straight forward video! Great angles and good demo! Thank you!
Bought it used it 3-4 times....the threads started stripping and c clamp bent a little...it was ok for 60$...if u plan on using it alot save your money and buy astro or OTC...good review👍
Very Helpful. Thanks for sharing.
👍🏻Awesome review, I’ve been thinking of getting one and this was very helpful!😎
Thanks for the honest review and taking your time to present this.
👍
Although I’ll never perform this maintenance, very easily understood & to the point.
Don't use an impact or even try to ratchet it out by force. The cast steel clamp threads are weak. Just put tension on the BJ, remove the ratchet *but leave the socket* and wack with a good 4lb or so mallet. Re-tension and repeat. You must leave the socket on or the screw hex will mushroom. It's OK as a DIY tool but if you just brute force it it'll be scrap metal after 3-4 jobs.
Funny finding you telling him this, I exploded this tool two days ago on the very first job. The threaded part turned out is hollow, that isn't a solid threaded rod and has a bearing ball inside that rocks back and forth after you bust the end off of it, I still haven't found that end piece that swivels.
Also yes, when it exploded the threads slipped almost 2 inches back thru the threads.
Be careful readers!
My one suggestion is to keep the tools threads greased, it will last alot longer.
Super cool tool, Thanks for the review and thanks for the Video. Have a great weekend
You too. Currently -8F here so I'll be working inside!
I might have to grab one of these but I will for sure be using my impact on it
Used this yesterday for my 92 F150 balljoints. It mushroomed my balljoints
Great Video!!.. Good Job!!
I have a 67 Buick Riviera. The upper ball joint has 2 spot welds from the factory. I had to grind them down, and it still was a bear to come out. There was nothing wrong with the ball joints or bushings. I just wanted new ones, so it could last another 56 years.
I’m doing all the work myself on several w123 Mercedes models . They have some weight on the front end with a diesel sitting out front so The old Ball joints got to go , look forward to trying this out , after one car is done I’ll likely do the rest right away .A shed and a few good tools keeps me a happy man , thanks for your review .
How did it work? I have a 1980 240d manual I've got to rebuild the whole front end! Did you remove your coil springs and do it all? My inner tire treads were wearing
Good review sir I’m thinking buying it to do my lower control arm bushing
Hey Josh, great video! I'm getting ready to use this tool on my 1970 Chevy C20 in the next few days!
Awesome 👍

If you're doing rusted in ball joints using this tool, hit the joints with penetration oil the day before. These tools will bend over time, but the easier you can get it to come out, the longer the tool will last.
I have that at my Florida shop need it up here at my Arkansas dirt patch...On your OBS have you ever replaced the cab mounts, mine are gone, im getting ready to tackle it after I do the front coils, Man my 89 f250 is ate up with some cancer but shes low mile and keeps on giving with that gutless IDI... Im no proffesional but im gonna do it at home Love your uploads and your toys!
Thanks. I haven't done the cab mounts on this truck, but if you search on my channel I did a white F250 4x4 that was really rotten. I did one cab mount, rockers, floors, cab corners, etc.
Shop cost here in CO. 1310.00 to do this on 2010 Dodge
Yikes!
Don't hold your breath. Exhale on the force!!
SWEEEET
What do you do if the bottom screw breaks off
Bottom screw breaks off what???
Try this tool on a GMC or Silverado 4x4 and you'll find it doesn't fit over the joints at all. I had to cut both upper and lower and rig the damn tool to make it work on mine.
That's after the first Maddox tool exploded on me with the first use. Took it back and they didn't want to swap it out till I showed the manager what happened to it. I felt it was a flawed unit and got another one. Finished the other joints after rigging it to fit. Almost scared to use it again, need careful people, the end exploded on mine, meaning the threaded swivel end, I have yet to find where it went. I had the entire unit in the vice just like this video, exact same method was used except he placed the swivel directly against the joint. The book tells you to use the other adapter at which point it won't fit.
Yep will not fit
Did my lower ball joints on my 2004 GMC Yukon xl with a dewalt xr 1/2” impact and it worked like a charm.
Can you use a impact?
I think so, if you do it slowly
Thanks for replying! Great video!

Bad return policy at harbor freight even if a you have a good in date cash recept please don't shop. At this place for Christmas you could get banned for years from returns at harbor freight tools!🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮
Go bitch at Harbor Freight. I don't work there or represent them. I've never had any issues at the store I use.
Why can't they just get to the damn point
?
@@QuickSpeedShop ignore Gerry. He's probably one of those guys that shouldn't be fixing cars
No offense, but if you already know what the topic on hand is all about, why are you tuning into this video? This is for people that don’t know or want to be informed about this matter. I thought he did a good job in explaining and demonstrated how the tool works. Yeah!!!! If you know how this works, I can understand this video was long and boring.
Used this yesterday for my 92 F150 balljoints. It mushroomed my balljoints
Why so? Were the cups too hard of metal? Not line up?
