Progenies of the Apocalypse, Mourning Palace and Gateways - all from the LIVE at FORCES OF THE NORTHERN NIGHT - is absolute magic, and for real the same stuff as Serpentine Offering. Not even joking with how awesome the live versions are.
About the drums - Dimmu Borgir has been blessed with some of the world's best drummers. They've had Nick Barker (of Cradle of Filth fame) as well as Norway's own Hellhammer (from another Norwegian black metal band, the infamous Mayhem). Daray is an excellent drummer as well, but the moment you see Hellhammer's soundchecks you know he's something else.
Getting into "real" black metal is complicated business. It's probably not something you'll garner a lot of views with on a reaction channel - but for your own personal listening pleasure? Far Beyond The Quiet by I as well as To Your Brethren In The Dark by Satyricon are relatively modern songs that capture the essential elements of black metal. Other great traditional black metal songs: Gorgoroth by Gorgoroth, Dunkelheit by Burzum, I Am the Black Wizards by Emperor, Far Beyond the North Waves by Immortal and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem.
If you're still with it at this point, black metal begins evolving. Try Mother North by Satyricon, Devil's Path by Dimmu Borgir, Perished In Pain by 1349, Havenless by Enslaved, Where Shadows Forever Reign by Dark Funeral and Yekteniya I by Batushka.
Now you "know" (the things worth knowing) about black metal. :)

@@rickhenderson2970 This is correct, black metal was a rebellion of pagans vs christianity in Norway. That's where the church burnings originated. The dark satanic vibe is more of a gimmick. Many of the hardcore original black metal guys has transitioned to a more pagan music genre later. Current bands like Wardruna came out of this. Gaahl is the man who made that transition first.

Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, Norway. They were one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene and their music has strongly influenced the black metal genre. This is the band you need to listen to Alex if you need to know what black metal is. They created it. The song “Freezing moon “ is where you should start.

And now, the more modern stuff, Black metal for the "Thinking Man", you can go down the route of Svartidaoui, Sinmara, Blut Aus Nord, Mare Cognitum and Deathspell Omega.
Black Metal is the most expansive of genres, actually. You have A LOT of Black Metal to listen to. Some are lo fi in the sense that it sounds you are just listening to someone frying chips, to some overwelming ambient stuff.

Dimmu Borgir, while affiliated to black metal, are not really the most typical example of what black metal sounds like... Funny that you've especially noticed the drums, the man behind, Hellhammer, is a legend, from another, "truer" black metal band, called Mayhem. And Black metal is totally satanic ;)
For more typical black metal: Darkthrone, Mayhem, Satyricon. Go with any of their 90s output, and you will get the full black metal experience. Dimmu Borgir in comparison is a lot more "easy-listening"...

Black Metal touches on the most taboo subjects (at least conventionally). It tackles Satanism, War, Hatered and often depression and Suicide. It mostly creates atmosphere, and it can be "angry " or "sad" but it should always evoke the darkness and agression. To simplify, Death metal is more serial killers, while black metal is mostly demons.

The intro is one of the sexiest intros with the change in tempo to the double bass roll. When I first heard this back when it orgonally came out, I was like this sounds some demon or of the like preparing their invasion and showing themselves off 🤘

First off i think you need to here more Dimmu Borgir and you have to see a live video with the orchestra and symphony. Try Progenies of the Great Apocalypse live nuclear blast video
Second this is much better quality then most black metal this is because most black metal bands especially the first few wanted there music to sound raw and bear bones and most black metal uses the guitar as more of an atmospheric peace then as a normal guitar where as this uses the orchestra and symphony for atmosphere
Third though the definition of black metal will vary from person to person i would say that black metal is a form of extreme metal that focuses on a dark atmosphere, with good black metal the listener should be able to feel the emotion that the writers had in mind, especially if you can relate to those feelings.
Forth that being said black metal is one of the darkest if not the darkest sub genres of metal.
Fifth the lyrics very band to band but often deal with political or philosophical ideals witch are often unpopular a lot of black metal bands are anti religious and preach nihilism and misanthropy. and the whole Satan thing for the most part is a metaphor they often use Satan like a mascot for there philosophys .
Sixth if you want more black metal after that i would suggest the lyric video for Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer by Behemoth ( i know you have reacted to them in the past but this song is a little more friendly to people that are just getting in to the genre) then Bathory Enter the Eternal Fire, and eventually work your way to Darkthrone Transylvanian Hunger.
And seventh if you read this thank you have a dope ass day!
