  • Support the channel if you can / yellowstone - We have all heard about the story of the lone bison calf being loaded into a car and delivered to the Rangers' station. Well on a cold May morning at 6 am we found an abandoned newborn bison calf along the road. Would the cow give up on him as we have seen with others or would she return and find him? It is proof of these cows devotion to their young and to just leave them be and watch.
We had seen many coyotes in the area along the river that morning and we were sure its minutes alive were being counted down. As always we just watch and witness nature play out as it will while recording it with our cameras.

Right from the beginning, I thought "she must be a first time mum".

Yes, I believe that we women are instinctively in a protective mode when it comes to childbirth of family members.
The Bison still had the Afterbirth attached, and it is maybe possible that the scent, and the hormone level triggered a certain reaction from the other female Bison in the herd.
This is very common in Elephants, and all the females (Aunties) will gather together to protect the baby, and they will actually encourage and "show" the new mother how to care for the baby.

I was surprised, too, that the calf was not calling out for his mother, and she wasn't calling out to get the calf to respond for her to find him. I presume the base reason may be because of predators.

I'm wondering if she was a first time mother, to attempt a river crossing immediately after birth like that. Most wild horses and mountain goats won't attempt something like that for several days after birth unless being pursued by a predator.
Regardless of her initial mistake, it was nice to see the mother come back and it was good instincts for the rescuers to wait a bit. I probably would have gotten in there too early after she left.

Great video. I know with cows It happens way more than you would think. Especially if they have twins. My son and I are bottle feeding a Bull calf now. because he wouldn’t follow his mother and she left him behind. Never searched for him. His sister however went on with momma. My neighbor (the owner) ask if we wanted have him and to attempt bottle feeding him. Or he would die. So we decided to give it a try. At first he didn’t want the bottle much and was so sad and weak he would just lay around. I honestly thought he wouldn’t make it past a week. But my son after a couple failed attempts feeding decided he had nothing to lose and began to treat him kind of like a puppy~ talking to him, petting him, named him. Making sure the milk replacement formula was warm enough. Finally little Redd perked up. He now responds to my sons voice. Follows him around like a puppy runs plays and jumps. With our 3 dogs. Lays his head in Stetsyn’s lap when we are sitting outside in lawn chairs. It’s adorable. He has lots of video and pictures from the start. He may start a vlog on his You tube. Anyway I was very impressed with that momma on this video, that she looked for her calf so long. Made me smile! 🥰

In the bitter cold, they band (huddle)together for extra warmth, especially to protect their babies. Well, one baby didn't make it. The mother was so sad. Then immediately, a lady penguin rushed over and put her wings around the grieving mother. My heart melted. Thank you, God.
