- The Ukraine war has entered its second year. VPRO Backlight gauges the mood in border country Estonia because, according to Ukrainian President Zelensky, they will be next. What is the war doing to the Baltic States?
Of course, this war is about more than Ukrainian territory: it is an attack on the democratic freedom we Western Europeans take for granted. Thus the Ukrainians and the Baltic States are fighting not only on Ukrainian territory, but on the front lines of the struggle between autocracy and democracy. Their fighting spirit offers food for thought. What if the war soon comes knocking at our borders as well? Are we also prepared to fight for our values and ideals?

Greetings from Estonia. Unfortunately, she just got coruption charges. Apparently she embezzeled milion euros from the Ukrainan non-profit. Sad to see how she risked her life and got so much hurt because of the war but in the end all of her hard work went to waste because of corruption charges.

@@markjogar Be factual. She is charged, not convicted. So far only the former mayor of Kiev is known to be taking unreasonable amount as profit for service he provided to Johanna and Slava Ukraina. What we don't know if she was working with the former mayor, the only public information we have, is that a Ukrainian witness 'believes' Johanna was in on it.

We've all had the policy of total defense drilled into us since the end of WW2...even us in Norway and Denmark have maintained it as the foundation of our military, despite establishing expeditionary forces a couple of decades ago.
Also to be fair...all the countries present in forward positions from Poland, through Lithuania and Latvia to Estonia, and protecting the Baltic states skies, deserve respect as far as I'm concerned.

As a Romanian I am embarrassed that the same mentality is not reflected in my people, this is admirable from Estonia a small but spirited and brave nation.
If your or any country host an anti Russian military organization like nato or the western military, you are automatically an accomplice to all crimes that has been commited around the globe. Everyone is always demonizing Russia and Putin as some evil aggressive dictator but very few people have anything to say about the most aggressive nation in Europe during much the time after ww2 and the entire time since the early 90's.
The idea that Ukraine is fighting for the rest of Europe, for their safety, security, future, and their democracy is nothing more than a gigantic load of bs. They're fighting to further the interest of Washington and a handful of special interests groups working together to take our freedom, culture, religion, and what ever democracy we've got left.
When a country blows up their own allie's pipeline to send a message letting them know there'll be grave consequences if they don't get back in line and do as they're told, that's not democracy either. That's what you call a dictator.
Thankful we've got many people in America starting to walk up and recognize we've lost much of our freedom and democracy.
A certain political party currently occupying the world's most expensive nursing home / day care took things that were giving to us from the S. U. and combined them with the things they learned from a certain Austrian monster. They've combined the two and have been using these things in our educational system turning them into radical indoctrination camps producing mindless idiots operating just like the brown shirts in Germany or their counter parts coming from Stalin.
All this crazy mental delusion they're forcing on us in the US is coming to every nato / eu member state.
It is all part of their plan of reshaping the world, destroying our society / cultures, and population control.

VPRO Backlight has been my favorite for 20 years or so. They make the best documentaries. It's awesome that they put them on CZcams for free with English narration.

I'm a US Veteran and served alongside Estonian Soldiers in Iraq. I have huge respect and admiration for them and the Estonian people. I agree with their fear and these men and women are on the frontline already. When the Day comes that Putin and Russia feel froggy even though the Baltic states are going to have a hard time in the initial phases until the rest of NATO can mobilize to stabilize the front

Congratulations on showing the East European perspective which is often drowned in Western media by armchair experts who have little understanding of the history of this region written in the blood and suffering for most of the 20th Century and even before that. So impressed with the generosity of donors and organisers of humanitarian aid delivered to the front.
This was very enlightening on our NATO partners in Estonia, you know whom your neighbors are. Very proud to have these strong allies in the Baltic. 🇪🇪 support from 🇺🇸
I stopped identifying as a pacifist some years back, because I have always been an activist… who believes strongly in nonviolence and employing nonviolent tactics instead of military. But the world doesn't always cooperate. Sometimes evil people start wars anyway. Before this war, I never imagined fascism and imperialism would return with such force as soon as my middle age; and I certainly couldn't imagine ever joining in a fight voluntarily. Then the RF invaded Ukraine again on a murderous campaign. I do believe had I the resources to get there and assurance I could continue on all my meds I would have volunteered in Ukraine. Mind you, I still won't touch a gun. They would have found a use for my talents. Now, I'm not so sure they won't be needed here in the USA. "We live in extraordinary times," as Nicole Wallace signs off every episode, seems such an understatement. Scary times.

yes true and the way russia has been able to successfully brainwash not only some people abroad but a good portion of its own population to the point some of them are literally living in an alternate universe where all that facts are opposite or different is kind of scary as its dangerous to have a country that can be convinced to do pretty much anything. Russia is a country. So is Iraq. "Terrorists" just means "bad guys". I don't think this constant waging of war by NATO should go unpunished. Im from New Zealand, I have no idea what it is like to be in this situation, I support Ukraine because they have their own independence and the land is theirs whether I agree with their politics etc etc has nothing to do with it. To me it is a great shame that lines are drawn based on countries rather than ideologies. While I accept some are programed to believe in their countries propaganda many are not and those people should not be shot at etc just because they happen to be Russian etc. In may ways that is what puts those ethnic Russian peoples in Ukraine and Estonia etc is such a difficult position but I suggest most do not agree with their countries ideology. Humans really are their own worst enemy and we are all the same when push comes to shove.

I'm from the southwestern part of the United States. Even though I have watched many many hours of reporting from and about the Ukrainian war, your documentary brought this war right up to my face. I know the U.S. has done a lot but seeing actual fighters (and you are all fighters and heroes) up close makes a tremendous difference in attitude. Blessings to the fighters, those who have lost loved ones and to Estonia and Ukraine. It's hard to imagine right now today but when the final wash is hung out to dry, the evil of this world will be dealt their final reward and they won't like it.
The US has done more Ukraine than anyone else, we were the the first to invade the country, taking over their government, turned the Russian speaking Ukrainians into second class citizens, starting a civil war between the neo-nazi militia we put in power in 2014 , supported by western Ukraine and the majority of people in Eastern and much of southern Ukraine so we could start a proxy war with Russia. Something Washington has been planning for 2 decades. Ever since the day Putin kicked out the companies and bankers Washington was using to plunder Russia for 8 years after they seceded from the S. U.
Russia isn't perfect but there's no difference between the Russian government, Ukrainian government, and the US government. They are all guilty of war crimes, killing & imprisoning political opponents, destroying democracy must to name a few they accused Russia of doing.
The most aggressive nation in Europe since before the S. U. collapsed has always been the United States. Washington has viewed Russia as a threat to the US for nearly a century largely because it was a communist country.

I have spend enormous time studying Russia and why it attacked Ukraine. I believe the single most important reason relates to Estonia and its two smaller NATO neighbours. It’s not of course a Kremlin public admitted reason nor Nazis , liberating Russian speaking people or NATO expansion. It’s the success of Estonia since leaving the USSR!. If Ukraine joined the EU and increased its per capita income two or three times like Estonia, Ukraine would be too obvious an embarrassment and realisation to the vast majority of poorer Russians that Russia’s model is a failure…Putin and his rich cronies would lose public support, and demand or force change. (Australia) .
Word in academia circles in US is that NATO is moving toward a Ukrainian admission after EU.

I have been to Estonia beautiful country. When you speak to people there you realise why they don't want to go backwards to the USSR.
They never joined by their own free will. The Baltic states were essentially occupied for 50 years, a crime Russia never paid for.
