05:38 Arles: A city and commune in the south of France, in the former province of Provence. Many artists lived and worked in this area because of the southern light. Van Gogh lived in Arles from 1888 to 1889, and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there.
06:06 Auvers-sur-Oise: A commune on the northwestern outskirts of Paris. It is associated with several famous artists, the most prominent being Vincent van Gogh. This was also the place where Vincent van Gogh committed suicide.
06:11 Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet: A French physician most famous for treating the painter Vincent van Gogh during his last weeks in Auvers-sur-Oise. Gachet was a great supporter of artists and the Impressionist movement.
06:13 Theodorus van Gogh: A Dutch art dealer and the younger brother of Vincent Van Gogh. His unfailing financial and emotional support allowed Van Gogh to devote himself entirely to painting. He died at the age of 33, six months after his brother died at the age of 37.
14:58 Impasto: A technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface in very thick layers, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible and the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.
