Flat roofs are ideal as green roof. The system structure for a flat, water-retaining green roof consists of a drainage layer with filterfleece, extensive roof garden substrate, and a vegetation blanket.

I read the article on disadvantages to green roofs. I just want to leave two points. As far as homes in the States, make sure you have engineered for the additional weight and that the contractor knows how to correctly build a flat roof. P.S. They aren't actually flat. The last point is more and more insurance companies are doing drone surveys and cancelling your homeowners policy if they don't like what they see. So we as a community of green citizens need to make sure we are supporting legislation that keeps this from happening.

does water not get trapped under the black sheet and does the moving blanket material not mildew completely after a short period? seems like a strange system

Hi Hadrian, thanks for your question! It's not a problem if there's some water in the green roof system. It can evaporate from the substrate and plants or be discharged through the drain. Hi Gareth, thank you for your question! The weight depends on the system and your local requirements, but for the system shown here the saturated weight is generally around 80 to 85 kg/m². We also have lighter systems that can even be suitable for a garden shed, for example, and heavier options that include a variety of herbs, grasses and/or wildflowers. If you're unsure about the weight that your roof is able to bear, we suggest you request a professional construction calculation.
