  • New thread from a new channel. Bringing some love to all those female artists that are so often overlooked in the #VC. !0 artists, some of which I've seen in concert.

    Nice to see Wendy Smith getting some love. Steve McQueen is a superb album! To this day one of my favourites.

    Steve McQueen! Great record. Ooh, Out of Season! Excellent choice. Emmylou! Pretenders, Lucinda, Maria Muldaur, Gillian Welch, um...Joni Mitchell! etc. Love for the ladies.

    Hi 👋 Greetings from New Zealand. I like Kate Bush very much. Lucky you seeing her in concert in 1979. I own a copy of Lionheart too. She had a number one song here with Wuthering Heights in early 1978. I like the second single lifted off her debut album The Kick Inside , titled The Man with the child in her Eyes.

    David - what a great thread entry! A lot of overlap here with female artists: all my Mary Chapin Carpenter, PJ Harvey, latter period Emmylou, and Nanci Griffith I have on CD. I saw Nanci Griffith live here in New Haven, Connecticut at an outdoor park concert many years ago - just an exquisite singer and performer. 'The Flyer' album I never get tired of listening to. Plus, fantastic music room setup! Will subscribe and check out some of your video library. I appreciate you taking the time to make the video, and for mentioning my channel. New to the VC and having a good time. Thanks again 😎🎶🎸🎤

      Thanks Ed. It's nice to see someone else appreciating dear old Nanci. And MCC too! I'll be keeping an eye on your channel. Good luck with it.

    Hi David! Kate Bush must’ve been quite an event. My daughter would’ve loved it with the dancing. She did loads of musical theatre growing up so loves that sort of thing. I have the album you showed and the follow up. I have a Nancy Griffith compilation from the /90s, and will now have to revisit it. The Madonna concert exit is something I’ve experienced unfortunately a few times. Thankfully, someone else is usually driving. 😅 I have that Prefab Sprout LP from my high school days when it was first released. Love it! I’ll be looking up The Unthanks. Beth Gibbons voice is a trip. That Emmylou Harris record at the end of the video is now on my shopping list. ✌️

    Excellent video David! Stand outs for me PJ, Tracy Chapman, Mary Chaplin Carpenter, Beth Gibbons. Although I’m a southerner, right on the south coast, I have always have a soft spot for The Unthanks. I love their voices and they are so of the region, strong identity, which I like. Kate obviously. I kind of did a similar thing with PJ. It wasn’t gradual with me, it was an epiphany for me, after I’d already collected several of her records. Mike

    He he, I got one of those VHS/CD series as well. Iron Maiden. I’ve played the VHS mind, but never the CD 😄
    That is my favorite Madonna, always remember that one, followed my South African friend to the airport. Bit blue after that so I went to a record shop after and that, and a Catatonia CD was the ones I bought to cheer me up.
    Wonderful Wendy Smith. Went on to work at the Sage Gateshead, head of learning and participation now. Did you know Martin McAloon performs Prefab songs on his own?
    Some grand artist there for sure 😊

      Wow, working at The Sage! I was talking with a friend of mine on a recent visit to Newcastle and he was telling me about him seeing Martin McAloon earlier this year (or maybe end of last), and Martin is doing another tour this autumn. I'm hoping to go.

      @@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 Be nice to see him, I, like most, never saw Prefab Sprout and I adore them.

    It was Steve McQueen on the thumbnail that brought me here. One of my all time favourites. I saw them play live at Portsmouth Guild Hall on the Cars and Girls tour. And I actually got a direct smile from Wendy. What a moment that was. Someone that I have not seen but wish I had is The Dream Academy. Kate St. John played oboe and other instruments for them and she did a great job on backing vocals (not a million miles away from Wendy Smith's very gentle vocal range). Check them out if you aren't familiar with them. Cheers

      Cheers John. I remember The Dream Academy from back in the day. I honestly thought them too fey, but I'm pretty certain I'd appreciate them more given an opportunity to hear them again. As for Wendy (and Paddy), they were bloody great, weren't they?

    • @johnbellamy3406
      @johnbellamy3406 Před 2 měsíci

      @@davidatkinson-lifematters4826 They were great indeed. I know Paddy continues to make music, but I've stayed away from that simply because I'm certain that I'd find the absence of Wendy's vocals too difficult. 'Fey' is probably quite a good word to use when describing The Dream Academy. But there are moments of grit in amongst their softer qualities. Their big hit, Life In A Northern Town, was a homage to Nick Drake. If you feel inclined, search up Lucy September from their third album. Or perhaps Hampstead Girl from their second. Both tracks spotlight the backing vocals of Kate St John that compliment Nick Laird-Clowes' lead, that I enjoy in much the same way that enjoy Wendy and Paddy's. Cheers

    Cool choices. You have seen some amazing concerts, David. I saw PJ live on the same weekend that I saw King Crimson. That was a very good weekend!

      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  Před 2 měsíci

      Now that is a good weekend. I love King Crimson. Fripp is so serious about his life's work with them, it's like you're attending a classical concert. Toyah brings out the humour in him though. And thanks, I have been to some really great concerts, although I must say that this morning, on a bike ride, one of my cycling mates told me he saw Richard Hawley in Wolverhampton last night. WITHOUT INVITING ME. 🤨

    I'd like to give a shout out to Miss Julianne Regan the heavenly voice of the 80s underrated folk/goth band 'All About Eve' 😊
