TRANSPOSE your MUSIC with the PROJECT ROOT KEY | CUBASE TIPS
Did you know that there are several tools in Cubase to help you transpose the key of a full song quickly and easily?
Today, we’re taking a close look at the Project Root Key feature to show you just how fast you can adjust the key of a song. (Available on Cubase Artists and Pro)
This is a feature that we didn’t look at in one of my other videos on this topic, so be sure to check that one out as well if you haven’t.
Between these two videos, you’ll know everything you need to fix the key of your song without wasting unnecessary time and mental energy!
You can watch that video at this link: • How to quickly TRANSPO...
Give it a try and leave me a comment to let me know how it works for you!

THX Chris. I don't know why you show always the right video-theme I need so much at this moment. Best Cubase Channel!
Lol! AWESOME! Thanks!
@@mixdownonline Same for me too. I was stretching my voice on my latest project and now Boom! problem solved, thanks as always Chris!
Hi good morning Chris thank you so much man your a star...man
Great tutorial Thank you. My question is what about flat keys?
All of these years I've been transposing in Cubase the long and cumbersome way and this was there all along. Thanks, Chris.
Glad to help!
Very good video, right to the point without too much talking! This is the kind of videos I prefer. I appreciate it so much.
Glad you liked it!
Simple and clear ! Thank you very much !
I love cubase more and more !
All this time I used to ask the singer to wait while I transposed Thanks Chris
dude hell yeah! quick and easy youre the man. first time on your page and you solved my problems. keep it up bro we need you
Chris, you're an amazing teacher, and I've learned tons from your channel. Merci.
Thanks and you're welcome!
Nice work Chris. For me, this is a bit of a revelation, like finding the constrain delay compensation button for the first time.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Chris Your films are very helpfull.
Awesome feature and explanation! Thank you!
Greetings from Brazil.
Thank you so much! Love from Scotland :O)
Great video Chris! Thanks for sharing with us! Merry Christmas 🎄
Respect bro...nice video
Wow! Very big help here! Thanks!!
Glad it helped!
Imagine me looking for this tutorial for years and I found it here in a second, ain’t that cool enough ?🥰 MASSIVE THANKS TO THE GREATEST TEACHER HAHAHA 🥰👍
Thank you so much. I had no idea how to do this, and so many software programs offer this feature
Hi Chris, just how brilliant is that! Excellent video, easy to understand and just what I was looking for on a recent project of mine. Fantastic...many thanks.
You are very welcome
That was awesome Chris!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks alot
Thanks Chris for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I love cubase more and more !
I owe you big time... Your videos are, well, like free University Classes... I just learnt so much from my own gear, watching one of your other videos, that it ain't funny. I.e. turning my Korg Keyboard into a quick midi controller (the knobs/buttons). Many thanks for that and the other tons of information contained in your videos, cause it goes way beyond just cubase, but music production in general.
Great tips, thanks.
You're welcome!
Always love Chris's tutorial
More to come :)
Thanks a lot 🙏
You're most welcome
Really useful, thank you!
You're welcome!
Just come back to this video after a year - so useful to have these as references. Thanks Chris!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Chris... That information is very useful.... I knew about the audio part, but I didn't realise that Midi events could also be manipulated. Cheers
Happy to help!
Excellent tip Chris thank you 👍🏼👍🏼
Any time!
very helpful thank you Chris
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much. Awesome.
You are welcome!
Thank You So Much Chris You Are Amazing!!!!!!!
You're very welcome!
Very helpful video
Glad you think so!
You saved my life brother. I had my DAW SET @44 and my I/O set to 48 (axefx uses 48) and when I mixed down it pitched all of the tracks up quite a bit… I just set the riot keys and things are as they should be.
You’re a wizard, thank you!
Sam L
Hi Samuel! I am happy I helped save a session! 🙌🏼
Excellently vid very informative cheers
Thanks
Salim, one thing that makes your videos stand out is that you zoom into the portion of the interface you're dealing with. I don't watch certain videos of other channels because they lazingly don't do this. Sometimes, I watch your videos while I'm on a queue for something at a shop etc and this is done on the phone, which means small screen.
Keep this aspect of your videos.
Awesome :D
Thanks! 😄
brilliant, I never knew about this, after 14 years
Awesome! :-)
OMG this is sick!... soo much better than Sonar's old methods.. That damn like button isn't big enough.. good sh_t man thank you for this!
You're welcome!
hello Chris, great tutorial, as usual; I have one question: what is the maximum of steps you think you can make in raising or lowerin the key?,...because it has also impact on stems and sounds that you use in your production. Most of them are only good within a certain area. Thanks for all the good work you do on your YT Channel!
Thank You
You're welcome
This was a great tutorial. Thank you! Question: Why would one Transpose when the Project Root Key does everything so seamlessly? Do the MIDI notes get moved as well? Thanks again!
Thanks for the info! When you transpose with the Root Key, is there a way to have the notes and chord events to update and show the transposed notes and chords? In video example, even when you transpose to D, the chord track still shows the chords in the original key.
Awesome tips Chris ! Thanks a lot and happy new Year :)
I have one question : if i have a track with modualtions, what to do ?
Thanks.
good
thanks chris
You're welcome!
Hi Chris. What about all the other keys? Bb, Eb, Db, Ab, Gb?
great info...
just to add to this ,its possible to add "transpose track" and change keys during the song if needed (by draw an event on the transpose track and cut it where need to change key, change the values on the info bar on the top)
Yes, like I mentioned in the video, here's the link where I talk about the Transpose Track czcams.com/video/X6wXHaWrjAg/video.html
Hi thank you for your videos. I cant find the root key as you mentioned at all on my Cubase 10
Great tutorial! One thing to keep in mind. This will not work on non-pitch midi events. For example, if C0 is provide vibrato or something else this will break your track. So with midi tracks only you this on pitch midi events.
5:34 I hope you also talk about how to fix this. It happened to me when you touch the automation volume by mistake. And it can’t be undo.
Chris thanks a lotttttttt for keep inspiring the artists like me all over the world. I need your help very badly for one issue, which is how to hear the sound of midi from my external midi instrument which is Roland TB 03. I installed this synthesizer in Cubase Pro 11 and all settings are applied, its working well, like I can record midi and I can see the fader jumping, I can see the recorded midi notes but I dont hear any sound coming out of my recorded track. I tried all the ways of routings but no help. I called Steinberg tech support and they did the remote session but they also couldnt find the way to make it work, except adding the Roland TB 03 in the device input instead of my input of interface channel and I can only do one at a time and every time I have to keep changing the signals. I could not add TB 03 as an external instrument in Cubase audio connections section because the list Cubase have for external devices, it doesnt have TB 03 on that list. I googled it but did not find the best solution, BUT I found one person on google and he said " I dont know what I just did but I made TB 03 working perfectly fine in Cubase".
So Chris you are the master of Cubase and I know you must have the right answer, how I can make TB 03 works in Cubase? If that person on google can make it work, so cant I. I will really really appreciate if you can help in this. Blessings!!!!
in the old days, when a singer couldn't reach a note we would vca the tape machine down or up a bit. A super quick fix. I wish there was such an option in the digital world.
There's more than such an option in the digital world. Variaudio in Cubase and Melodyne to name a few will manually pitch correct the way you want
I like to transpose the chord track so it reflects the new key. Also, after established, I go to the mini menu to transpose the selected mid notes to represent the correct notes for the new key. Otherwise it becomes confusing for me to see the wrong midi notes, for the pitches being played.
🙏🏾
👍
Hello Chris is it possible to have multiple key changes in a medley of songs project? eg starting in C change to G for the second song all in same CPR
Hi Chris I would like to know if we can create our own midi loops to follow the chord track.I cannot get my midi loop export option to highlight. Thanks
If the drums are tuned to a specific key then why not change them too? Konferenz had a session where we tried two different drummers, the second asked which key the song was in and he tuned the kit accordingly, the difference was astounding, the drums glued right into the song, it was a real eye, or ear, opener for me, that was more than thirty years ago and I never forgot it and where possible I try to get the drummer to tune to the key and if not I’ll repitch the drums to fit 💪
Did know I had that option, thanks as always. If you had a recorded Acoustic guitar track, for example, does that pitch change degrade the sound? ALso I know in the days of tape, they often recorded parts at 1/2 speed and octave down, and sped it up to full speed. Is there a way to do something similar in Cubase that doesn't degrade the sound quality?
Like I showed in the video, you need to choose the right algorithm fro audio to keep the best quality :-)
Hi i have question! When i use Auto Pan in my project and i export the track, i dont hear the auto pan in the mixdown... what can i do? Btw you videos are sooo helpfull!
Awesome, thanks for the tip Chris !
What happens if the root key changes (once or more ) in the middle of the song ?
Is there some kind of "root" track ? (similar to signature track)
Hi.
yes you can add a "transpose track "Draw and event on that track and change keys by semi tons up or down (you need to cut the event on the transpose track and change then change values)
here's the link to the video where I talk about the Transpose Track czcams.com/video/X6wXHaWrjAg/video.html
Great video! Question: Do you have a video or can you make a video on how you can force Variaudio to snap a vocal track to the key of a song? I feel like this should be possible, but I can't find any info on it. I like to highlight everything and just move the "Quantize Pitch" slider to autotune the vocals (lazy, I know). Sometimes notes don't fall onto the right note and then I have to go through and manually adjust, which is a time suck. Let me know! Thanks! Cubase forever!
For Variaudio, that's the way to do it. Patience leads to great results ;-)
Hi
When i use Autotune should I select key in cubase ?
is there any plugin ? to get that job done?
Is transpose track available in cubase 8 elements?
Hello Chris, Tech/Nerd question for you. Some VST soft always export tracks in Stereo but a lot of time the source Left and Right are exactly the same so without stereo information it`s in reality just a Mono track but just a little louder (Please correct me if I`m wrong) So what you be the advantage to keep this track as it is VS Converting it with Multi Chanel to Mono fonction in Cubase then deleting the extra tracks. I`m a Grumpy Old Sound Man and it freak me out when I see a Bass/Kick in stereo. Thanks for your time Stay Safe and Have a Great Weekend
You're right and that freaks me out as well. There's no advantages to keep a kick drum in Stereo unless the kick sound has a room effect within the VSTi. I tend to convert those audio to MONO before mixing.
How does root key work with major and minor and the chord track? The chord track seemed to suggest Em was the first chord in the video, but you selected project root key of E. Wouldn't that mean that initial chord would be E major?
Anyone know if this feature is available in Elements 12?
I want to start doing beat for someone, but I can't play on the key the person want to sing, and I tried to transpose it with my key board, but it is not transposing in my cubase but can transpose only on the keyboard, what could be the reason
HI ! nothing to do with the topic here ...but... Can you or anyone please tell me.. when i record a ex guitar with metronome .. the click is recorded to ?? this is Cubase 10.5 ...
Is there an efficient way (C12 Pro) to also get the Chord Track to update, based on the Global Transpose? In the example, you change the song from Em to Dm, but the Chord track in no way represents that. What is a quick way to transpose it's info as well once you've committed to choosing a new key?
I guess not?
Algorithm is also not seen on my Cubase 11 Pro is there a problem in key commands. 🙏
You just answered a question I have been seeking for answer.
Is there a way to transpose the chord track?
If you select the chords on your Chord Track you should see the Root key info as well and change it from there.
@@mixdownonline thank you sir
Hi Chris why don't I see the transpose name on the top right or even elastic
U have digested the #cubase ,,,, can I get classes from u, if yess then how???
By the way,,, a lots of respect from INDIA
I have 2 courses available for in depth training www.mixdownacademy.com/courses
@@mixdownonline thnksss a lot sir
What if i want it in D major?
One thing need to understand you said change the key root and you kept saying E minor and D minor. My question is how I can figure out while I am changing the key root it's E minor not E major? Thx
If I use this method to transpose a full song stereo file will it also transpose the drums?
In that case, yes it will
Thanks@@mixdownonlineis there any way to transpose a full song stereo file without transposing the drums?
How do you change to say a dbmin?
This will not convert Major to Min chords, it will transpose from one key to another by keeping the modal scale in place.
the over compressed vocals wont allow my misophonia to listen to this tutorial, sad because i know im missing out on what i need.
@Chris Selim - Mixdown Online sorry i did not mean the track you used, I meant your spoken vocal for the tutorial. Its the the inside of the mouth sounds that send me crazy. Im sure your very good at what you do. Have a great day.
Chris, as a professional composer and arranger, I find this confusing. Em is not E it's G.
Yes, correct Em is G. If your music theory is top shape, that can be confusing. This feature only transposes from one key to another by keeping the tonal model in place. So for me, if I'm in Em, I'm keep the Project Root Key at E. If I'm in D Dorian, I keep it at D. Just easier for my brain ;) But it doesn't matter much, The Project Root Key is just a feature where you establish a reference point to transpose your music.
Why is it that most of you online cubase instructors that I have listened to DO NOT TELL US WHAT VERSION OF CUBASE YOU ARE INSTRUCTING ABOUT??????????!!!!!!!!!! Wtf?....
This is a very limited definition of "transpose". All you're doing is making a fixed change in pitch up or down by a fixed number of semitones. In music it's often useful to transpose between keys but the "root key" in Cubase literally means "piano key" note, not 'key' as in key-signature. The clue is that there is no way to specify MAJOR or MINOR. So how would you go from, say C-Major to B-minor? You can't do that by just going up or down by a fixed number of semitones because your chords won't be diatonic for their scale degree.
So sick of this epidemic sounds ad....
What Epidemic Sound Ad?
I thumbed down because it was 2:20 before we see the screen and hear about why we clicked on this vid in the first place....
You call that putting the audience in context to explain the reason I use this feature. Learning is not a race my friend.
