In Magic: the Gathering, if you pay 10+ mana, you're expecting something amazing! Unfortunately, that's not always the case, as this list can attest.

As a kid my dream every game was to cast Polar Kraken. Never happened.
Persistence is key😂
If you play commander, you could probably pull it off pretty easily if you wanted to. Just to knock that off your bucket list and make baby grogboxer happy.
I had a friend hard cast it against me. It was a game ender but not in the way he wanted, as I had an icy manipulator in hand. Next game he went with the much more reasonable crash of rhinos.
🥺
@@Crunchatize_Me_Senpai Commander is basically where we get to live out our petty MtG wishlists...still feel good about that one time I cast a fully kicked Urza's Rage to knock off an opponent. Still not sure if my Door to Nothingness play off of Ramos was a fever dream or not though...
Aladin's lamp is basically what would happen if vampiric tutor cost between 70 and 109 mana to cast
Bill: "Hmm, that didn't go over well. I guess when we reprint the effect we should make it instant...and cheaper"
Mark: "1 mana"
Bill: "Uh...Mark, you realize that there are mana values between 70 and 1, right? I think having any card in your deck added to your hand for 1 mana is going to be bala...."
Mark: "Pay 2 life"
Bill: "..."
Mark: "..."
Bill: "Genius. You got lead for Urza's Destiny"
@@Tinil0:some time later: well that didnt go well. How do we fix it now?
"....Make it a sorcery"
The redeeming quality of Polar Kraken and Stratodon is their artwork.
Its hilarious that if Aladdin's lamp was 1 mana it would still be stone unplayable
I heard somewhere that the original textbox for gleemax was " tap: you win the game unless any opponent pays you $1". At the very last moment, somone told the r+d people that they couldnever print that even in a joke set and they had to make a mad scrambl3 to change it. The result was...less than inspiring
imagine paying 5 5 mana and your lamp gets disenchanted.
I really don’t see a reason to disenchant that card 😂
@@Rijnswaandwin more
Hey, *nobody* disses Gleemax! My absolute favourite silver bordered card is absolutely perfect! Long live Gleemax, I am definitely not being controlled into typing this message!
You really said it! Gleemax is quite possibly...no, DEFINITELY the best card that has ever been printed. It should be number 1 on every list! Gleemax is the best! Run...whoops! Sorry, hiccup! Ignore that.
Gleemax will get its due in Top Ten Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)
When I was a brand new player in the early 2000's, I thought Polar Kraken looked utterly amazing lol
"who cares about lands when attacking with it twice wins you the game?"
Well, the art is pretty cool… the polar bears are a fun detail…
Cumulative upkeep on polar kraken may be not that bad, 11/11 trampler if cast would probably end the game in 1-2 swings anyway. The cost, though...
I remember my friend cracking a polar kraken when ice age first came out. We were so excited. On the rare occasion it actually got cast, there was always a counterspell, terror, swords, ect, waiting for it.
Polar kraken may be a bad creature but it does have one of the best artworks in oldschool mtg
* For 10 mana, Soulscour should destroy all permanents except artifacts you control. Would be worth the mana then.
* Speaking of artifacts, I love how Blinkmoth Infusion untaps ALL artifacts, not just the ones you control. As if it wasn't already limited enough.
* Stratadon has such cool art, even being one mana less might have given me a soft spot for it. Put down 3 dual lands and get a 5/5 trample on turn 3 is hardly overpowered for needing that perfect setup.
* At least with Gleemax it can be put into play without casting. And surely there are uses for having a 1 million mana value card for mana value shenanigans.
* Polar Kraken and Leviathan used to be my favorite cards when I first started collecting. Those and Force of Nature. Definitely was a little Timmy.
If I'm gonna make infinite mana I'm gonna do something much better than Gleemax. At least I can use Goblin Welder to cheese it into play
@williamdrum9899 I've made a million mana before in my Myr Galvanizer deck, and simply used it to cast a nuke of a fireball
Blinkmoth Infusion gives you 14 1/1 Phyrexian Goblin tokens when you have Ovika, Enigma Goliath on the battlefield.
Who cares if your opponents artifacts untap.
Aren't there cards which burn your opponent equal to the CMC of something else? I've heard a remark of that being a reason why there's no 20 CMC cards.
I love Rust Goliath. It's won me a bunch of games in limited.
Yeah, it's a decent card
As a devoted leviathan player, polar kraken felt like power creep betrayal
Adding most of these to my yuriko commander deck. Great to see my buddies reactions losing 10 plus life 😂
Honorable mention... the BFM. I tried and tried to make it work because it was epically amusing when you could get it to drop... but it dying to a removal spell just made me cry.
While I certainly wouldn't claim that this makes the card *good*, I actually play Blinkmoth Infusion in Commander, exclusively as a card I can tutor to the top of my library with Mystical tutor to dome my opponents for 14 with Yuriko.
Yeah, I think a card's stats or text box are what makes a card *good*, and that its CNC being useful is its man usage in decks.
I use it to get 14 1/1 Phyrexian Goblin tokens with haste in my Ovika, Enigma Goliath artifact based Commander deck. I actually have to cast it, but the deck is loaded with so many mana rocks, it isn't as bad as it seems.
My new home is on mountain time so i get your videos an hour earlier now.
To be fair I think the playabiliry of soulscour is biased by the fact that mass land destruction is a bit taboo in a lot of commander playgroups
Thats what im thinking too. I can absolutely see a situation where ive rapidly ramped with artifacts and cast soulscour to clear the path for swinging to win
I've said it before (probably) but I'm a huge fan of big dumb cards, and expensive rubbish like this is very loved by me. Maybe not as much as "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)", but still a lot.
Dead Drop and Rust Goliath are both good limited cards. It seems strange to include them on this list.
I play tinker into Gleemax all the time in commander, its such a strong combo that the other players just scoop and refuse to play against me any more. Now that's powerful!
Even back in the day I think most people recognized Aladdin's Lamp was terrible. The dream was to cast it and then use Animate Artifact on it lol
I was expecting the entire list to be cards similair to polar kraken, so this list wasn't as bad as I expected.
Pretty sure the Un set with Gleemax there was a card or two that allowed the "infinite" mana to play Gleemax, as part of the joke😅
There's Mox Lotus, which is itself... 15 mana. And Mana Screw is potentially boundless, but tedious. Unhinged was just generally weak and poorly balanced across the board (maybe not surprising, since it was right after Mirrodin and Kamigawa).
@@kitsovereign4127 oh aye, though the humor was good.
Unhinged is the set that had cards that stop you from playing the game, like, a lot of fucking cards that stop you from playing the game. It's one of the least fun sets to actually experience the cards from. It is actively drier than old core sets.
“The Colossus Of Sardia” . A 9/9 artifact creature that you cast for 9 mana and then spent another 9 mana each turn to untap the thing. You have to spend 9 mana each turn just to keep using the thing.
(Although maybe an Icy Manipulator would be useful in the same deck.)
That was one of the first really big creatures if I remember?
Mentioning Atraxa was totally on point. She's so broken! You have no reason not to play her.
Back in 2005, I so badly tried to make a deck out of Eternal Dominion on Magic Online.
I found Eternal Dominion to be quite strong. Play it in a Jhoira of the Ghitu deck in commander and suspend it alongside Obliterate. Then when you get them you probably just win the game as you can get Eldrazi out of someone's deck to prevent anyone else from doing anything the rest of the game. That being said, that's a very edge case that doesn't really work that well in any other deck.
It's certainly one that, if not actually playable, at least would be entertaining to hit with "Copy target spell" effects. One Eternal Dominion? Meh. Several Eternal Dominions going off each turn? Why yes, I think I will just take the best cards from all of my opponents. Plus with more cards that let you cheat permanents into play, Epic isn't as much of a downside as it used to be.
I had a 60 card Jhoira deck with Apocalypse and Jokulhaups instead of Obliterate (liked the flexibility of being able to suspend or hardcast the boardwipes), didn’t run the Dominion though, I ran Barren Glory instead.
Had Deep Sea Kraken and Greater Gargadon as suspend creature finishers, Simian Spirit Guide for a touch of ramp, Arcane Denial and Lightning Bolt for early control. Serum Visions and Brainstorm for card draw.
I miss that deck.
Dead Drop was an auto included in sealed deck at the time.
rust goliath was a decent card in draft doesnt deserve the spot xD its clearly a card for draft
I think it's more about how few cards are CMC ≥10
(6:51) LOL at including Gleemax on the list.
(8:22) I'm not surprised to see Aladdin's Lamp as number 1. For that mana investment, maybe it should've just let you draw X cards, or at least keep up to 3 of the cards you look at with its ability. After all, shouldn't a magic lamp grant you 3 wishes? Even then, 10 mana is probably too expensive anyway, unless you cheat it into play somehow.
Gleemax may be silver bordered, but Omniclown Collosus is Acorn and that makes it strictly worse to me. Lets not even get started with 'Affinity for Clowns'
When I was a kid, I used to play a combo deck against my little brother that consisted of hard casting Aladdin's Lamp and then Animate Artifact to get a 10/10. I also only had one copy of Aladdin's Lamp in the deck because that was all I owned haha
Setting blinkmoth infusion next to dramatic reversal really makes it look like the worst card in magic.
They're the same, except DR costs 0-12 less mana, untaps all of your other nonlands, isn't symmetrical, is 2 rarities lower, *and* has one less blue pip.
Keep in mind that reversal is a mid-tier card.
Idk if it's just powercreep or thoughtful R&D
You forget that at the time of Blinkmoth Infusion's standard environment, artifact lands were legal. So it basically untapped all your permanents, lands included. Of it was still terrible...
DR also can't untap your lands, though, which is definitely a downside.
Dramatic Reversal only gets you 2 1/1 Goblin Phyrexian tokens with haste when you have Ovika, Enigma Goliath on the battlefield.
Blinkmoth gets you 14 (no matter how much mana you actually spend to cast it).
Huge missed opportunity to make Aladdin's Lamp just tap to search any card from your library (and then maybe sac itself after three uses for the flavor)
The three wishes thing has nothing to do with the original story, it was first used in conjunction with the Genie of the Lamp in The Thief Of Bagdad, which the Disney version of the story is itself heavily inspired by.
Iname is basically, " I name 'Spirit' type which means I probably won't use my effect much."
While Polar Kraken isn't a strong card, it certainly captured our imaginations as kids. It was a card to get excited about and draw on the back of schoolbooks! Loved that thing! It didn't have a lot of power, but it did have a lot of influence on us. And come on, High Tide and Mana Flare were waiting to help it out!
Yay for the (5)(5) mana cost on Aladdin's Lamp. When I learned of it years ago it made me smile, and still does to this day. X3
As someone who spends a lot of time messing around with Pauper Commander stuff, Rust Goliath holds a special place to me just by virtue of being the absolute biggest common creature in the game, and one that's solely upside. It's a real consideration in a deck with a ramp or flickery angle (reanimation's a much harder sell in the format), and while protecting something you jump through that many hoops to get to is very real, there's not many board wipes at common either, so at minimum you only need to shield it from targeted removal specifically. Obviously Ulamog's Crusher is around as this sort of mini-Big Eldrazi threat in the format now, and the prototype half of Goliath is a little bit not-great (not strictly off-rate since reach and trample are nice, but a 5 mana 3/5 isn't accomplishing a lot)
I know old creatures were weak, but what were they thinking with Polar Kraken? Was it futureproofing for being cheated out?
Aladdin's Lamp?
Don’t be silly, that costs 5+5 not 10 :P
What are we questioning here?
It costs 55 mana so yeah.
Aladdin's lamp should be legendary, change my mind
@@banditkeithkingofduelmonsters I hope you're being facetious.
The only time I ever saw Aladdin's Lamp used in a game was a joke deck with animate effects. Ring of Ma'Ruf arguably captures the flavor of making a wish better, too
Gleemax is awesome, i play it in my casual artifact deck with chaos orb and other unfair things.
I like how you displayed the 3rd/4th Edition price for Aladdin’s Lamp 😂
A Gleemax deck actually won a Pro Tour in 2021 so it shouldn't be on here
Lmao
In my early days of magic I built an urza tron deck with Aladin's Lamp AND Ring. I didn't know what the heck I was doing lol
I remember having to grant a Polar Kraken forestwalk because I had Erhnam Djinn on the board and my opponent had nothing else...
We laughed ourselves silly trying to figure out how the situation would play out in the game world.
Djinn: "Psst... Hey! Big guy...! Follow me and I'll show you a secret path through the woods which will lead you past the guards. Why? Well, I'm a djinn and we are known for our treacherous ways."
Later. Random guard number one: "Hey, you hear something...?"
Random guard number two: "Nah... must've been the wind..."
Random guard number one looks over his shoulder. Sees a shape like an iceberg gliding through the forest like it belongs there. Whips his head back and grips his spear more tightly: "Yup! Just the wind! Nothing to see over there!"
I had a friend who played Eternal Dominion in his Narset commander deck. We were playing a match,he attacked with Narset, cast Eternal Dominion and then realised he sorta soft locked himself for the rest of the game and at that point i couldn't help but die laughing at what I just witnessed 😂 lol. Good times
Iname would have been a cool creature to give a new legendary card in neon dynasty, nothing pushed but maybe a better exploration of the functional intent
“Alladin’s Ring” For 8 mana you can cast this overly expensive trinket and for another 8 mana you can do 4 points of damage. That’s 2 mana per point of damage. It’s not too bad. But you can use other spells to do more damage at 1
per 1 point.
Here is an idea. Put ether or both Aladdin’s Ring, and the Lamp, in a deck. After casting ether one of them, cast a blue “Animate Artifact” enchantment to turn them into high powered Artifact Creatures.
The thing with Gleemax, is that theres multiple ways of making infinite mana in unhinged
Not only that, but artifact’s are generally pretty easy to cheat in, so if you’re playing with other cards too, the need to generate that much mana isn’t even necessary
Well the art is awesome on that Polar Kraken!
I just put Blinkmoth Infusion into my new Ovika, Enigma Goliath artifact based commander deck.
Getting 14 1/1 tokens AND untapping all my artifacts to cast more stuff is just too good.
The block before Mirrodin gave us Scornful Egotist to combo w/ Torrent of Fire. Maybe somebody in R&D really wanted their Goblin Machinist to get really buff and printed Blinkmoth Infusion : )
Egotist was meant to combo with all of Scourge's CMC Matters cards, because Scourge had a High CMC Matters theme and also Storm for some fucking reason.
Soulscour can be brutal if you have decent mana rocks and artifact lands. There is also a bunch of cards in white, or especially azorius and jeskai that would let you cast this for free
The only time Blinkmoth Infusion is used in tournament play is for its mana value Calibrated blast since you can dome opponents for 14
Just noticed Iname has wings in the art and doesn't have flying. 😂
Gleemax chooses targets for abilities.
If remade today it would also choose modes of spells.
I’d like to see your top 10 worst 1 mana or less (0) cards list
Aladdin's Lamp might be useful in... _Battle of Wits_
Here’s what I’m wondering: How good would Aladdin’s lamp be if it cost zero?
Nobody show Demo from EDH Deckbuilding this video
I actually use gleemax in a deck. I reanimate it though after dumping if from my hand. The one million mana value on the card actually matters for some cards like ayara, widow of the realm, and the ability on it actually is something worth something on the board.
I tried to use Stratadon! I had 5-color Invasion pre-con and tried to add all suitable cards to it ))).
Polar Kraken was one of my first rares I got when I started and thought the card and art was amazing but never got to use it.
I used to run the Lamp in a deck but that was cuz before the days of Scryfall we assumed that the card explains the card n the Lamp says that u draw X cards n then put back the others. So I was using it alongside things like Jace's Erasure to mill lots of cards while selecting the best counter play option I could find. I love the card but ya, it was kinda bad even the way we played it n then I realized that with errata it didn't actually draw u any cards... :/
6:45 - If it was a 6/6, though, paying 6 for it would be BROKEN. Especially because it wouldn't even require two green mana to do it!
A top ten of creatures with no powers or abilities would be cute!
Omniscience to Gleemax. Check mate. Ok, it's still easy to deal with. Unless you make all your artifacts indestructible and keep a counter spell for a board wipe that can exile the artifacts.
Soulscour with all artifact lands sounds like fun
I have a friend who built a deck where the entire goal is copying eternal dominion as many times as possible
I will happily take any Arabian Nights Aladdin's Lamps that people want to just give away after seeing this list :).
At least the lamp can be cheesed into play with goblin welder
I thought that Eternal Dominion was used as a finisher in some meta decks?
I dunno about Rust Goliath. It is the biggest creature you can reanimate in Pauper, I really wonder if there is nothing worse that would fit this list.
Also it is played in Powerstone decks in brawl due to being one of the bigger creatures you can cast with powerstones
Polar Kraken also etb tapped so it's a terrible blocker unless you also have a way to untap it and that's an additional investment.... Aladdin's Lamp was the investment, you could basically decide what card you needed.... It wasn't good, but arguably better than Polar Kraken!!
Oh man.. I actually used to play Kraken and the Lamp in the same deck.
Kraken was fine if you could cheat it out and didnt let it stick around for more than two or three turns. ( you should've won by then). Coming into play tapped really hurts it though.
Aladdin's Lamp is more for when you have too much mana and nothing good to do. It's an interesting card to actually play with. But even back then there were better options.
Bit late, but I will use Polar Kraken art for a custom Yugioh card that will be an addition to a custom archetype of krakens.
And I will make sure it's actually good (or good enough in archetype)
Early Magic suffered a lot from what I call "fear of big number", where designers were seemingly afraid of giving high cost cards good effects or statlines, apparently afraid that they would be invincible, disregarding the fact the high cost is already a big hurdle to cross, and players should be rewarded for their efforts, rather than punished.
"Fear of big number" can also be seem in early iterations of other card games, such as Hearthstone or Yu-gi-oh.
Yugioh, within its first few months in the OCG, had only one hundred less Normal Monster power for no-tribute and one tribute monsters and what is still the highest two tribute attack on a Normal. It's problem was less that they didn't want to print things that were too high power, it's that generally speaking, they didn't want the best effects to also be on the best stats, and that arguably lasted like a year and a half until Psycho Shocker got printed.
And then they printed the Chaos Envoys and shit hasn't really been the same since.
Clearly, the best play is to use Blinkmoth Infusion to untapped Aladdin's Lamp so that you can use its ability twice in the same turn. 😉
My dude, you do know you could just pitch a Polar Kraken to Force of Will, right? It was a fine card in it's day, you just ran all the counters worth running and used Polar Kraken to finish people off. It's a fun type of deck, and it forces the control player to play splashy aggro in the end to win. So yeah, it was fine in it's day, but it probably wasn't the absolute best deck you could build, even if it was actually full of decent stuff like Counterspell, Brainstorm, Portent, Force of Will, Soldevi Excavations, just so much good stuff. If you splash White you got Wrath and Kjeldoran Outpost, both were amazing, and you could just run Thawing Glaciers to fix your mana. What more do you want?
You can copy an Epic spell's recurring effect with things like Strionic Resonator, right?
Yep!
I don’t cast it ever but I either ninjitsu a polar kraken with satoru, or I cheat one out with blue braids
Works everytime
my dream is casting a Soulscour as a one sided wrath
For the Epic card, I've been forced to play it by an opponent who made a copy of it in a commander game.
Planar Bridge or Planar Portal are hugely better than Aladdin's Lamp, despite their fixed costs
If Eternal Domination was and instead of or it'd probably be worth playing.
Rust Goliath + arms race
Inkmoth Infusion is also symmetrical
6:37 Is Wastes not a basic land type?
Blinkmouth and Powerstones 😂
soulscour is my favorite way to win an EDH game with my artifact deck :)
Throwing my honorable mention of Draco! Best case scenario it's a 9/9 flyer for 6 mana, but it also requires you to pay 6 every turn and that's IF you have every color basic land. Base cost is 16!! Plus it's an artifact so very easy to destroy
Draco has an upkeep cost of 10, not 16.
The issue with Draco is that it actually had a Top 8 due to the combo with it - no one ever needs it to get into play for it to be useful
Draco's converted mana cost is so insane that that actually makes it playable on its own - the card was a combo finisher because you could fling its CMC at the opponent and that usually killed them.
Huh...number 3 came out of nowhere
Stratadon from the plane of Hoth
Oh,no, the ass chatbot invasion has begun!
Welp. I reported the one I saw. Honestly, if I wanted to see a City of A**, I'd play the Unhinged card instead. (I'm thinking of actually seeing if it's possible for me to trade the copy of that card I own for a Blacker Lotus from Unglued instead.)
How about best/worst 0/0 (or */*) creatures?
Wood Elemental is 1 for sure
Sac Gleemax with Bosh, Iron Golem to deal 1 million damage to target player
if you are playing with un-set cards, you have Mox Lotus. 15 mana is a much better combo to make for paying for unlimited mana & mox Lotus is infinity mana. So your combo only needs get you 15 & not 1000000
Isn't the technical best for Stratadon 4 for a 5/5 trample, as there are Wastes too? (still bad tho)
Wastes doesn't count as a basic land type, so you could only reduce the cost to 4 with its domain if you were allowed to run the Playtest card Barry's Land.
Take a closer look at Wastes' type line.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr Ahh yes :) there is nothing after Basic Land, so there is no "type"
@@keithhitchcock4596Yeah. While Wastes is a Basic Land, there is no Wastes Basic Land Type.
That's why all the cards that care about Wastes say "a land named Wastes".
