I was taught to play the phrases of the prelude of the First Suite in one bow so it sounds like a flowing river. This is a lot harder than breaking it up. I don't know what level I'm on. I've worked on the Haydn in D, the Elgar. The Dvorak is too hard. Not all of it but the hard parts are. The KodĂĄly Solo Sonata is also beyond me as is the Bach 6th Suite. I'm what you'd call a good amateur. I'm a translator, writer and artist. So I'm not a full-time or professional cellist.
@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 Haydn D is very hard, to do it really well is even harder than Dvorak!
whatever level the Schumann Concerto is.... BUT I will never be crazy enough to do Kodaly.
@@ceciliahuang3984 Not for me.
Iâm around level 9
Level 13:Prokofiev Concertante Symphony
Level 14: Offenbach Grand Cello Concerto
@@just1Gaming hahaha yes it is a very difficult concert, but I don't consider it more difficult than sinfonia concertante
Level 14: Lutoslawski cello concert
15: Kodaly Sonata (in original tempi
@@vaughanmclea6907 Good for you. What a piece! Only it's too hard. Did you guys know KodĂĄly was a cellist.
Completed level 6 at the age of 64, having started at 58. Hoping to continue a level per year!
It's in the later levels that you slow down.
I noticed that early on. Got through books 1 and 2 in the first year, and subsequent books took a little over a year each. Book 5 took almost 2 years, but book 6 moved a little more quickly. I know it takes as long as it takes, but hoping Iâll continue to make steady progress.
did you have tension issues starting as and adult?
ââ@@wherewhatpinkiet7291I know I did. I started at the age of 47 and the eagerness caused so much tension! Only now, 11 years later, I am still learning to get rid of it. Which is also a matter of confidence.
@@wherewhatpinkiet7291 yes! Partly due to nerves and thinking that the cello, being such a large instrument, had to be held firmly in order to control it. Bow hold too tight, left hand squeezing the strings (comes from 50+ years on guitar), and just overall tension that comes from fear of missing notes so shifts werenât smooth, string crossings were squeaky, and vibrato shook the entire cello. Takes years to learn how to play relaxed!
Iâm 15 years old and I started at 6, now Iâm level 6. I donât know if itâs good or not. I hope that I didnât trash these 9 years of my lifeđ . Nice video!â€
I would suggest some acceleration on your practice, I was level six by the end of my first year
â@user-zj8zr6xi3i you're insaneđđ
@@user-zj8zr6xi3i depends on your playing quality, you may be able to play the tarantella at the first year of playing, but I can guarantee you that it won't sound as polished and fleshed out (musically, melodically and in-tune) as when you'd be playing it when you're "actually" on the level where you'd be fit to play it.
Thatâs a pretty good spot to be in! Everyone improves at different rates :)
Same age but level 5... I need to step it up
Iâm lvl 2. I started 4 months ago. Wish me luck. Btw youre videoâs even help me at lvl 2. Tanks
I began at 27, with a solid background in another string instrument. 12 years later i'm between 8 and 9, still progressing. But progressing is not only just going from playing 1 to playing 12. It's HOW you play it. You can play lvl 3 badly after some years of progressing, and play it better again 5 years later, and even better 5 years later.
Yes. It doesnât matter what piece you can read or attempt to play. The levels go with the technique and musical skill you learn and apply. Someone who is at level 6 can play better than someone at 7 if they nail down the techniques and musicality
Level 1 and loving it!
Made it to 12 with Kodaly, Bach Suite 6, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky Rococco in my active repertoire. But that was many years ago. Thanks for your many thought provoking videos. You have contributed much to the cello world.
Just realized how bad at the cello I amđ
Level 11 babyyyy
Oh yeah! Keep crushing it!
Same broskiii
As a high school cellist I have played a majority of pieces up to level 11. But I would have to say that my favorite piece on this list is tarentella by squire or allegro appassionata as I am very nostalgic for both peices and still play then often as warm up pieces. Great vid!!
same !! tarantella is fire as hell- i still have most of it memorized for nothing more than fun haha
Nice! My kid started playing cello at age 11, 2 years later he is at level 5. He also plays classical guitar at level 8 (started at age 9, 4 years). His cello teacher is great focusing on the fundamentals and the quality of the sound.
Level 1 amd proud! đ
Keep it up, it gets really rewarding
In my younger days, I played "Dance of the elves" by Popper in a concert. But now my Fingers are not fast enough anymore. đ
I was given the Dvorak way before I was ready for it. Trouble is years later, after I've gone through the Bach solos suites up to and including the 5th, and the Haydn Concerto in D, and the Elgar, I still find the Dvorak too hard. I think it's simply beyond me. I'll never master it.
Keep grinding and youâll get there! Have faith! đđ»
This happened to me in a piano piece- I stopped learning the piece for a while to get it out of my muscle memory and then re learned it from scratch
I've been playing for 1 1/2 years, just started the piece at #6 today. Tarantella is so fun to play
Im 12 turning 13 this year and I got up to level 9. The rest seem easy but aren't. Great playing man.đ
Eu amo o concerto de Dvorak! Amei o video!
Love it!
Enjoyed! Thank you!
Meu querido amigo Ilia, sempre muito bom vocĂȘ compartilhando com a gente esse show de talento e musicalidade que vocĂȘ tem. Abração man
We love Suzuki books!
You play sooo well ! Congratulations
I love to see this. I am an adult learner, almost 4 years and have gotten up to about Level 7. That is with regards to being able to play it at a decent practice tempo. Not at performance tempo or with such intricacies of the bow. So I'd say a strong level 4 with aspirations and goals hahah.
Your level 1 is wrong : you are vibrating đ and it doesn't sound out of tune
CryâŠ
Thanks for this video! Iâll love to hear an evolution of cello concertos, or maybe a ranking on cello concertos or something. I am between level 2 and 3, I just started my second year on cello. I just started learning Vivaldi cello sonata in e minor, and Iâm just finishing the 1st section, struggling with reading tenor clef đ. Thank you for this video, I enjoy hearing you play!
Level 7.... Thank you đâ€
Definitely level 8 - I'm playing allegro appassionato right now and loving it đ
Awesome! It is a great and beneficial piece!
Level 1 but Level 11 when I play air cello đ
Haha!
Iâm a level 5-6 started playing when I was 11 Iâm now 14. I hope to get to a solid 6 and strengthen my vibrato.âšđâš
I'm level 5 at 15, and I started in 1st grade, is it over for me
hi i loved your video! i am at level 10 i am working on Haydn concerto in c major mvt 1.
Absolute level 2 for now. Always upwards and onwardsđ
Thatâs the spirit Mette! đŻđ
Level 8 after 1.5 years, and Level 10 after 3 years as an adult.
Kodaly would be level 99 then......(btw I like your video on Kodaly. very nice!)
levels aren't so important...but it's always good to have some benchmarks - not that we like to compare, but milestones are always helpful! Keep up your good work.
Bravo! ...sorry I just enjoyed the video a lot, thank you.
I'm at level 0 because I don't play the Cello. ;)
currently the first chair in my JH varsity orchestra, Ive played at level 7 so far.
You're so fun to watch and so very impressive! What do you use for your mic?
Thank you! For this video, I used a Zoom H6 Recorder. But I have different microphones now. Soon I will start to use my new Shure SM7B. Really wondering how it will sound like!
Got to somewhere like 10.5 and started to REALLY get into solo sonata rep (Crumb, Hindemith, Kodaly, etc) so no Dvorak until I knock those out! đ
Proud to be around Level ten! Currently practicing Elgar :)
Me too, I'm doing Saint Saens cello concerto rn :)
@@4LY11MC Nice, that was the last thing I played too. That one difficult part in the first movement is so hard to play in tune though đ
I got to level 6 in 2 years ish. Tarentella is awesome
Level 11 in my younger days. Probably fallen back to level 6 now LOL
I need to take lessons with you. I have an instructor but I don't feel his passion and I'm not being trained in a technical fashion like I was with my violin. Even twice a month would benefit me TREMENDOUSLY!!!! I'm 56 and have been playing for almost 2 years. My bowing is dreadful. đą
I understand you. You can find more information on my website! Or link in the video description đđ»
I play violin and viola but admire cello a lot. For part 2 add walton cello concerto level 16 lol
Currently working on getting to Level 10 by practicing the Haydn C Major concerto
As a beginner violinist, level 3 looks already pretty difficult with the shifting and speedy bow. But I don't know how comparable the cello is.
I would say Iâm level 8 ish. Iâm taking cello lessons as my second instrument in college, itâs really fun :>
Worked on the Saint-Saens Allegro Appassionato back in the day. Haydn and Dvorak were pretty far out of reach. Question - are you supposed to keep your right pinky lifted from bow?
It depends on the teacher. Some believe the bow is held by the thumb and the index finger, others lije mine think the pinkie should almost always be in contact with the bow. Both work great !
Love it. I think its to big of a jump from level 10 to 11 and i think elfentanz should be switched with dvorak. Everything else is perfectđ
I agree. Dvorad is one of the hardest. But most beautiful.
Thank you so much for this beautiful video. Iâm barely at level 5. Are you taking students right now?
Glad you enjoyed! Yes, class is open! You can visit my website in the video description!
Thank you.
đźwow when you gave the last lesson there wasnt a piece of anything in the background!
Finishing the Breval Sonata C major.
Don't know which Level it might be.đą 4, perhaps?
Gotta love the "Twinkle, Twinkle" *Mississippi-Hot-Dog* rhythm.
LOL, that's what we say here in the States...anyway!
NICE VIDEO!!!!!!!
Haha! Nice one! đ
i'm around level 10 bc i've been playing for like 6 years. currently playing that haydn cello concerto
Hey exactly the same here
0:00 0:21 Twinkle Little Star
Yep!
I would add a different level 11. Thatâs a big jump from Haydn C to Dvorak. I would rate Haydn D above Dvorak. In my opinion itâs the hardest concerto to play well. It has to be effortless and perfect. Personally Iâd say Iâm level 11.5. Iâm comfortable playing Dvorak, Haydn D and Rococco but not Shostakovich or Prokofiev.
Allegro Appasionato and tarantella are essentially same level wise. I would put Haydn concerto level 9, Schumann concerto or Rococo level 10
Around 12 with Dvorak!
Working on Rococco.
I think im on level 9, i started cello 7-8 years ago, and im currently 13
Nice! Keep up the good work and you will be great! đŻ
LOL... got to level 3 and thinking this was a 2 min video I felt really good :D but there are 12 levels! come on! đđđ
Lvl 15 is schumann cello conserto
at level 10, Haydn is very fun
I'm at around a level 10 I think, been playing for 11 years
11 or a bit less Thank sfor the eval.
Fighting at level 9 for about a year now..........
Level 14, Kodaly sonata
Level 13 tchaikovsky pezzo capriccioso
Im practicing Haydn D major
Level 11?
Bro, tarentella was a nightmare for me. I finished the piece recently, but when i started, my skill level was not there yet
level 11đ
đ„đ„đ„
Popper After Dvorak?
đ§đ·
Level 4
Im at level 7 now for only have been playing for 2 1/2 years
Nice! Good work!
Level 10 to 11 was a huuge jump xd
Trying to have a solid level 11
On the edge of my seat the whole time searching for psychological validation at being a higher number... I'll keep that number private though
Sad to be around level 5 đ
Great video tho
I thought i was four, but I've known Tarentella for months. I'm thoroughly confused.
Another Level 12: Kodaly Cello Sonata
Level 3, kinda final boss for međ
You can do it for Level 4! I believe in you đȘđ»
I am probably level 5-6. I started at 7yo and I am now 13
Yes! Nice work! Keep up the good work! đ„
I am, after learning 5 yrs, at lv 8-10 ....
I think Iâve got to a little bit above level 10 in my high school career
Awesome! Keep grinding!
Level 10 ig
Iâm level 1
Fake news. Level 1 was doing vibrato.
Also, apparently after 4 years, I'm still somewhere between 1 and 2 đ
Oh no! You got me! đ€Šđ»ââïž
But you are playing the level 1 with your level being at 12. If a level 5 played level 1 it would sound very different. The time feel and the tone , right ?
level 20: penderecki concerto 2
Level 2đ»đ
I think im around level 8-9
đȘđ»đȘđ»đȘđ»
I think around level 6/7. Halfway! Ik oefen hard doorâŠ
level 2 yet.
I think I'm around lvl 15
Lvl 9 cellist here đ
Level 2đ
I can play haydn cello concerto no problem but holy **** popper is scary im not going near that
That makes the two of us lol!
