Its way more dangerous for society to hide mentally ill away. If he excluded her family then yeah its exploitation but if everyone signed off and got buyers remorse later whats he supposed to do about that?

Agreed. Shelley has always been terribly smart. Smart people are unfortunately more likely to develop mental and emotional health problems. Her traumatic treatment during the filming of The Shining no doubt contributed to her instability. People hide their vulnerabilities out of survival instinct, but eventually, this revolve can break down and the symptoms become more apparent.
She's also has submissive personality traits, particularly to men in positions of power. I believe it's part of what made her character in The Shining work so well because that character in essence WAS Shelley. Acting the part came naturally to her, and I think Kubrick exploited that by making the trauma "come naturally" to her too. I don't think his intentions were inherently evil, nor do I think he intended it to hurt her as bad as he did. I think he could not empathize with her enough to understand how much his actions would affect her. That does not absolve accountability for what he did.
It seems she still has this internalized, as you can see when she shrugs and apologizes, minimizing her appearance. Despite initially calling him out for not being an actual Dr., she passively agrees to do what he says as he keeps calling himself Dr. Phil. He is trying to get her help, genuinely I do believe that, but at the same time he is taking the dominant stance knowing that's what will lead her. It's manipulative. Manipulative to try to get to a better outcome, but unmistakably manipulative.
Shelley, even in young womanhood, surrounded herself in loving animals with very few human helpers to take care of them. She loved acting in children's programming but wanted no children of her own. She always has appeared drawn to the innocence of animals and children, so it makes sense that she'd also be weary of adult humans due to the inhumane treatment she has suffered from quite a number of them. Celebrity status also dehumanizes celebrities to people, especially entertainment reporters. She probably suffered in silence for so long because she probably felt isolated, unable to trust anyone besides her animals whether from professional advice or fear for her own career. Mental health was still such a taboo in her time.
A lot of how Shelley was behaving "erratic" in this video to me looks just like a CZcamsr performing at a camera, telling stories. Shelley has always been interested in stories, such as shown in her Fairy Tales series. CZcams allows people to feel connected with those that they are watching without the fear associated with actual human interaction. In her isolated home, like many of us, she probably watches a lot of CZcams and has adopted many of the mannerisms of those she watches. My parents are from the same generation as her and often can't discern what is fact from fiction on CZcams, and so my mother many times believes the may conspiracy videos out there. It doesn't surprise me that Shelley shows belief in many similar conspiracies. Most of the conspiracies feed into fears that people from their generation had with the technology boom, like how technology enables the government to insidiously spy on us (a fear also stimulated by Cold War propaganda). What seems ridiculous to the younger generations because we are used to technology and its rapid evolution, and the changes of how we understand the world based on this technology, seems like incredibly believable and potentially scary advancement to the older generations. Her developed paranoia makes sense.
This is not to say that she does not have an underlying mental health issue. I do believe that it is obvious that she does, which feeds into these other traits. I don't believe it's as, for lack of a better word, "insane" as this interview paints.

NasikaSakura This is a really intelligent comment. I do think she’s an empath, and a sensitive soul. Which is why she may not have handled Kubrick’s abrasive behaviour as well as another more tough woman could. But that doesn’t excuse the way he treated her. But sensitive, passive people are so easy to exploit. I think they are prone to stress-induced mental illness for this reason

It’s the same kinda thing as when the media makes out that a film is cursed because deaths are involved (The Exorcist, Poltergeist) The media just need something and someone to blame, and what better thing to blame/ get a good story out of than a movie where she’s playing a victim of a murderous/possessed psycho and unstable character.

Shirley Temple10 minutes ago (edited)Well nobodies 100% sane or perfect! I didn't use to like Dr. Phil as I thought he
was one of those "reveal all" talk show hosts and I find it irritating
to listen to stars sad stories. However I won’t have known what happened to Shelley if it was for his
show. I think and pray for her every day and hope
she gets the treatment she needs which won't be easy because she is so paranoid and doesn't trust anyone anymore.
As for Dr. Phil I know his intentions were
purely humanitarian and was assessing her depth of mental illness. How do we know if there isn’t some
psychiatrics watching the show that could offer to help her properly? Also mental illness is not something to hide
away or be ashamed of. It is an illness like any other illness and it can be
treated. Also it can happen to anyone at any time even
    you.
    Shelley Duval was in exceptional
actress, having allot of depth in interpreting her roles like nobody else
could. She was beautiful fragile and she certainly wasn't treated with due
respect by Vivian Kubrick’s father. She
throws mud at Dr. Phil but her own father isolated Shelley Duval from the other actors
and forced her to repeat her lines over and over and used the scare tactic to
get “the right reaction” during the filming of “The Shining” .As far as I'm concerned you who berate Dr. Phil couldn't even see the forest for the trees so stop throwing mud at somebody who is trying to help Shelley. Most people won't have had the guts to take on this sad and delicate task. The interview wasn't meant to entertain you it was to help Shelley.
