    So how do you tell whether a verb is in the masculine singular imperative (don't go) or the declarative (he/she goes) without vowel markings?

      You don't: it's just from context that you'll know.

      I'm starting to think that learning and reading Arabic will involve a bit more guesswork than most European languages.

      It's the standard textbook used in the USA. It is absolutely terrible, which is why I have to make dozens of videos explaining Arabic. Don't waste your time.

    I can't seem to find any information about the past forms of jussive/subjunctive. Are there any major differences?

    • @ProbeUranus
      @ProbeUranus  Před 8 lety +4

      +nhckmn The jussive and subjunctive only exist in the present tense; there's only one form of the past tense.

      +Ian Campbell I've just figured that out! It took me a while, but I was prompted by the title of the video, i.e. if this is what the present form looks like, then what about the past? It didn't think it through in terms of the impossibility of perfect subjunctive or jussive meaning. I was your student many moons ago at UMW, though I was somewhat less motivated then. I'm back to pick up a few things I missed! I hope all is well. McLane
