Super groovy score by David Shire for 70's Masterpiece " The Taking of Pelham 123" Best viewed in HQ. Starring Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. Directed by Joseph Sargent and written by magnifico Peter Stone.

This trailer/video is better than the whole 2009 remake!
Still frames, jump cuts to the score, synchronized pacing, yes, I would say so. Fantastic.
It’s better than the original movie tbh not to say it’s crap but it’s on the upper end of mediocre outclassed even by its own magnificent score, apart from the dynamic between Shaw and Matthau at his end... _“Pity.”_
DEFCON : Fantastic comment LOL
2009 version sucked
The remake didn't even come close to how great the original movie was.
I truly wish they still made movies like this.
Different time different era much better back then
They could, but they won't. It's all part of the "process". (the dumbing down of society)
@seymourscagnetti1413 You can say that pal!
Well I wish they still made music like this.
I operated , like most train operators, all the NYC lines. This music in the most uncanny way conveys the rhythms, the deep frequencies, the dangers, the sudden screams and the rushing unknowables of a 200 ton machine hurtling through the dark entrails of a city collapsing. What a musical triumph!
A lovely description !! :)))
Born raised and still living in London England.
Never been to NewYork, but I'm guessing that your vivid description is making a lot of Old newyorkers very misty eyed for the city of that particular time...the mid 70's.
@@UBZUKki go.What are you waiting for.
@@orangefacedbuddah1776 Time travel.....So I could check out mid 70's N.Y.C
New York’s a go-go...
David Shire gave us one of the absolutely all-time greatest scores for an urban thriller EVER!
Absolutely!
Yeah! It's kick ass. Thanks for creating this tribute zerokomma. Gesundheit!
On Facebook, someone recently asked, " What film score would you like to be awakened to in the morning, as opposed to a regular alarm? ". Most people answered with typical mainstream scores. I said, " The Taking of Pelham One Two Three ". I've probably seen the film close to 50 times. I never get tired of it. I wouldn't give 10 seconds of my time to the remake.
Whoever played the drums on this recording should get an Oscar.
RIP Jerry Stiller. This movie is a real masterpiece!!!
You're a sick man, Rico.
One of the best movie title themes EVER. Great movie too. The re-make doesn't hold a candle, especially the way they re-wrote it. In the original, the movie ends when Walter Matthau is on his way out of Martin Balsam's apartment after questioning him as a possible suspect. Just as Matthau is closing the door to leave, Balsam lets out a sneeze -- just as he did when he was talking over the subway car's radio to Matthau during the hostage crisis. The look Matthau gives Balsam when he re-opens the door is priceless and "makes" the whole movie. NONE of that was in the re-make.
Great to see I'm not the only one who remembers the look on Walter Matthau's face at the end. :)
The entire movie was full of things like this, each side character had its quirks and little oddities that made them stand out. I still love watching it everytime they show it on TV.
I'm sure it's also lacking in 90's sitcom stars. I never bothered with the remake.
the thugs in the remake were so boring too, even mr. brown had more characterization than all of them and he barely had a character!
This and the score for "Capricorn One". Percussion + brass + strings = adrenaline
Oh my gosh yes. When they're at that memorial and suddenly james brolin comes running along. Brenda Vacaro's reaction
Well done. Best film ever. They don't make them like this anymore.
100% Agree its So New York !
This is when New York was a REAL city , and all the great sites were still there . You had cash money .. phone booth ... real taxis .. no cameras of Big Brother
@@mordecaiesther3591 When they deliver the money to 28th St., across the street is The Belmore Cafeteria. I used to eat there frequently with mostly taxi drivers as I worked at 425 Park Avenue South for several years.
If ever a music score fitted a location, this is it. Badassly brilliant.
There's not actually that much music in the film, but good god this theme music. Just about the heaviest ever.
[In best Walter Matthau voice]
That's a sick trailer Zero.
The soundtrack was a huge reason why the original was a success
Far and away the best version. Many great actors and New Yorker casting.
"The taking of Pelham 1,2,3,"(1974)
Is a classic crime film, it showed the gritty side of NY in 1974, with a all star cast...
still come back to this one often...how’s that High Plains Drifter snip up coming?
One of my all time favorite movies!
2:55 LOVE THE ENDING PART WITH THE MUSIC SCORE IN SYNC WITH THE RUNAWAY TRAIN STOPPING ON THE HORN NOTES
I just watched this again recently and was reminded how much I loved the music, and then realized, of course, its David Shire.
0:12 - sick beat.
this is one of the greatest edits I've ever seen, looks like it could be a DVD menu screen
Honestly to me the 2009 version doesn’t exist, it’s only the 1974
Saw this movie last night. I recognize just about every location shown in this film. I worked at or near Park Avenue South for two decades, and in downtown Manhattan when I got out of school in the early 1980s. I also commuted to work on the number 6 train, which is the Pelham line, so I recognized almost all of the subway stations as well. The place where the police car flipped is very near 4th and Broadway, where Tower Records was once located.
The good old days of NYC
Worked at 425 Park Ave South in the late 70's and had lunch at the Belmore Cafeteria many times. My son recently looked at an apartment on East 8th Street and we had a cup of coffee next to the "Cube" which you get a quick look at when the car flips - the street shown in the movie between Lafayette Street and 3rd Ave. sis now paved over with tables and chairs.
I only visited the USA and NYC for the first time in 2019...all the 70s movies came flooding into my head - king kong, pelham 123, french connection and many others...i hope i go back one day
Pure and simple a masterpiece score story acting directing…the climax. Glorious
There is not a bad scene a false in this movie. Everything is perfect. The use of black and white. The choice of the performers. And two of the greatest actors of our time going ahead to head. Whoever decided to cast walter As Then negotiator I hope they got a huge bonus. This is not only a great movie. It is one of the greatest movies ever made. Perfect in every way without seeming contrived
Despite the subject matter, the film was quite funny. I always remember: "What the hell did they expect for their lousy 35 cents - to live forever?" and: "One of my towermen dropped his wedding ring down the john." Later it transpires it was his female co-worker's ring. He asks her indignantly: "What were you doing with your hand down the john?" I could barely hear the TV where I was laughing so much.
One of my favorite all-time movies! Great composition and editing, makes me wanna see it now even though I watched it only some weeks ago :)
This is just so great. I particularly love the cutting at 0.50 with the subway map shots synced with the syncopated horn stabs.
My favourite film ever, my favourite soundtrack ever and a brilliant trailer that hopefully encourages younger generations to check out a somewhat overlooked movie. To me, the quintessential New York movie and soundtrack.
This could very well be the most 1970’s NYC thing ever! Even more so than the actual movie!
Shaw had an amazing string of great movies in a very short period of time. Sting, Jaws, Pelham
You're a sick man, Rico
I've watched compilation this about 50 times now and it's still brilliant. Great job sir.
thanks you brother. Glad you enjoyed it :) Appreciate your comment.
Stunning edit still after all these years.
One of the GROOVIEST movie themes ever!
I remember seeing this movie as a Child ..as This Score stayed in My Mind For ever ..!
Makes me want to rewatch this movie... makes it look even better than I remember it. Thanks for the video.
youre welcome :)
this is the greatest score EVER! I remember my big sister taking me to see this when I was a kid and the score stood out just as much as the movie did. does anyone what else Mr. Shire did thats similar to this? I could listen to this all day! thank you for loving this and great job by the way!
This is a masterpiece of rhythm editing...
Nothing beats the Original 70's Movies !! :)
Well done... Should've ended with "Ah-CHOO!" "Gesundheit" and then Matthau's face.
Still, well done.
Bless you.
One of my all-time favorites. Takes itself seriously but has many funny lines. 70s NYC cynicism at it's best. And a great score.
One of my favorite films since seeing it back when it was first released, and one of my favorite film scores, back in the days when soundtrack albums were instrumentals. Excellent job on the edit, really captures the spirit of the film.
brings back the grit and the color of growing during that time. Good old memories
Theyre flying the train to Cuba.
You're a sick man. Rico.
You can feel the beat of the 70s orchestra pounding through the streets and the sirens wailing through New York City 😁😁😁😁😁
Truly Great, compelling and authentic, no nonsense film making at its best.
one of my all time favorite movie and movie soundtrack.....funky as hell!....haven't seen the remake and don't plan to....AWESOME JOB, Zero.....
1970s crime, drama, and suspense films had such great scores, same with a lot of the top TV shows of the era like Hawaii 5-0. It will never be this good again.
One word : Classic!
70年代のアクション映画こそ至高
This was really cool. It really nails the tone of the movie.
The music , incredible !
Masterpiece.
That was really well put together.
thank you :)
The 2009 remake totally sucked.
it was the exact same thing
True! It lacked the witty script and 1970s NY grit the original has.
The remake was very different than the original. Style and era aside, the protagonist and antagonist differed greatly from the original and the rest of the cast lacked defining character. As for the way the movie was shot, director Scott repeated what he's done in almost all of his latter films; relied on fast cutting, cameras quick zooming in and out for no reason, adding digital editing effects to make the footage look strobe-like, throw on color filters (which he did in his earlier movies, too) and over use a semi-circle of dolly track to to dolly left to right or right to left every tenth shot. The original was gritty, sharp, harrowing, hilarious and perfect in my book. It's often puzzled me how director Sargent could make such an exciting film like Pelham and then make one of the most lethargic, unexciting sequels to Jaws -- Jaws The Revenge.
Nicely put together. Kudos. Excellent work.
Brilliant video.
...thanks mate
This is the greatest thing on youtube!
Awesome job.. makes me want to the film again. .. oh and buy the soundtrack. cheers
That is some nice cinematography.
1974 original movie is very cool. I saw the 2009 remake, it was just out of control and it was completely an ass. So the verdict is:Walter Martha and Robert Shaw version, arguably the best movie i'd ever watched. Thanks. ☆★☆★☆★
Matthau and Shaw were excellent actors But so are Travolta and Washington..... But the original Pelham is far superior in my opinion 😛
@@mikeowen6664 okay I can take it into account. Check mate!
DAMN STRAIGHT! One the greatest dialogue rich movies EVER!!!
What a great edit. Thanks 👍😊
@zerokomma, a stunning tribute to my all-time-favourite film.
Great mash up of the film.
merci chief.
The music had such swagger. Golden age of soundtracks.
Nice work on the video. Came to hear the music, stayed to watch the show.
Great video
Great Job Folks!.. Expertly edited with the music....One small note, and I mean this more as a kindly suggestion... The very last frame....after the sleepy drunk slides on the bench... The last frame should be Matthau's "I got ya" face at the door.... But this is still great.
I would kind of agree. But then, you give away that masterful ending for someone who hasn't seen it. Then again, the absence of context might preserve it.
Again thank you...glad you enjoyed it.
I so very dig it.
A cracking piece of editing!! Big smiles :))) Great track!!!
Agree 100%. Absolutely great cutting. Check out the b&w freeze-frame, sync'd with Shire's score, when the cop's motorcycle flips... ( from 1:45 )
this movie is so cool it hurts .. !!
Great freaking video!
Masterpiece menace of the city of New York
Great tune and music
Love the actor's names font! Perfect!
Absolutely thrilling!
thank you sir!Appreciate your comment. All the best
Kick-Ass Edit! :)
Genius. You got the power of greyskull in your mind and hands sir.Wonderful timing.
The original 1974 film is terrific, if it wasn't for Godfather 2 being somewhat better, this picture would have gotten the Oscar !!!!!
Thank you!
Superb edit!
thanks for the comment. Definitely a bit more humor needed in the new version. Cheers
OUTSTANDING
That is some damn good work there zerokomma, now its time to watch the film again I think.
This darned drummer is great.
a superb score one of the very best thanks for the upload
you are welcome
Genius
Amazing editing ! You actually made me to watch again this great and fun movie ! And the music is outstanding ! I can listen to it over and over ! Thanks and congratulations ! A real piece of gem !
Awesome video man! One of the very best for a film from the 70's, for one of the best action films of the decade, and of course, the best ever score by David Shire!
RespeCAT & thanks for the upload! It goes straight to my favorites! ;) :)
you''re welcome brother, glad you liked it. Truly on if the greatest 70's thrillers, they dont make them like this anymore.
Great video! If there's a cooler way to introduce a character than a freeze frame and a caption, I don't know it. Love this score, too. I transcribed the main theme a while ago - hellaciously difficult because it's a 12-tone row but the amazing thing is that Shire derives the entire score from that one row. It's like a mashup of Arnold Schoenberg, Neal Hefti and Curtis Mayfield.
Whoever you are. You are a genius this is fuxn brilliant work!!!
thanks man, appreciated :)
Superb re-edit George - crystal clear full ratio with added dialogue to contrast with the action and beefy brass score.
Numero Uno.
EXCELLENT!
Very nicely put together montage here. An awesome score of a great movie.
@gtelm
Thanks bud...glad u liked it.
...absolutely!
I agree the trailer is good!
Absolutely Brilliant!!!!!!!!!! Beautifully done, every movie trailer should look and sound like this!!!!!!!
Please do more from classic films of this genre!!!!!!
will do, thanks for your cool comments chief.
That's a R21or R22 they used in this movie. I rode them back and forth the summer of 1987. The graffiti on them was brilliant. My favorite was the Dero and Wane with the Sphinx on the doors. They did not GOH these, they scrapped them. The last one I saw in revenue service was parked at 149 street (with the Kaze Hims piece on it). One car exists as a money train car in the Transit Museum (if the car is still there).
