    Joseph Goldstein - Insight Hour - Ep. 12 - Right View: beherenownetwo...
    ================
    ‘There is no single factor so potent in promoting the good of beings as right view’ - Buddha
    Joseph describes the wisdom factor of mind that is Right View and the function this understanding serves in illuminating both the causes, and the means for cessation, of suffering. Our actions are often rooted in the unwholesome thoughts that stem from a false view of the Self. Acting in a manner that serves and enhances the right view of non-self is the underlying context for all of our practice. It is the beginning and the end of the path, to understand the truth of Dukkha and abandon all of its causes.

    I am so grateful for this profound, difficult, yet very important teaching on Right View! Joseph laid it out its importance in the beginning "R. view sets the direction for the whole Path," and quoting the Buddha, leads to "freedom from birth, aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain; the end of suffering." // I have to say I am troubled by the simile the Buddha gave "if you take all the grass, sticks, trees, plants from the forest, are they taking you?" No, the trees, sticks, grass, shrubs, etc are not you. The simile is teaching us not to concern ourselves with things that are not mine. Far be it from me to quarrel with The Buddha BUT I feel interdependence with the natural world, kinship, continuity. If someone were to take all those things from the forest (to steal earth's precious resources) I *would* be concerned! I hope we all would! // The simile of the dog tied to a post (a cruel image that isn't easy to hold) works better for me. But in its horribleness may be its wisdom, we do cruelty to ourselves when we revolve on a short leash around a post of our own dearly held and upheld by society wrongful perceptions. Foremost, and not to be distracted from the key point, the teachings on R view are so essential! The 5 aggregates are the "terrible bait of the world with which the world is infatuated; but when one transcends this, the mindful disciple of the Buddha shines radiantly like the sun." May we all cultivate wise reflection! Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu! __/\__
