Whenever I did windows on my VWs, I kept the seals warm. Working in the sunlight and lots of windex keeping everything slippery. I can't wait to restore my 67 bug this winter.

Keeping the seal warm helps. But Mike next time install the trim. Than put the seal on the glass. The factory uses a throttle tube to guide the pull cord in place. Saves a lot of time using this method. Thanks for your vids. G.

I hate doing glass. Last windshield I did took 3 small ratchet straps, a can of glass cleaner as lube, ball hook tool, 7 beers and a few left handed cigarettes.
    Excellent video btw

I managed to re-install the Orig windshield trim on my 68 ghia, even that one took me hours with cuts and sore to my fingers ,as always another great job by you sir 👍🏼

Window pro where I used to work I recall had a small hand tool. It was like 2 hand tools together( chained to each other). You have to pull the other hand tool with the first and it would kinda zippers the rubber and the glass at the same time( without smashing thin gauge chrome). At least that’s what I recall. But yeah original original was softer. We tried for years to order from from in Austria/Europa but no one could find us German original new rubbers.

We used to use soapy water to help it go into the rubber easier

I have a friend that was auto glass tech he had tools with a hook and balled end on it he put windshields in our 56 beetle&66 bug he sprayed rubber with a rubber softener if didn't have that with him he would use Wd30.

Following with great interest. The bentley workshop manual mentions a using cord for installing the trim in a similar way to when installing the glass in the car. I wonder if that would help with the flimsy trim. I will give it a shot when doing mine, I think i managed to get my trim out in good shape.

mine also had a crack in the trim. I figured how hard it was to install there just was no way to do the old trim pieces.

Dude I've put 4 windshields in my '56 when I had it and broke every single glass. So frustrating.

Oval windshields are the hardest to install. I have broken a few. the trick is to push all the way around the windshield evenly use Lube on the rubber start pulling around the bottom middle first and work your way around Once it lips over you dont want to push on it all the way down until it is lipped all the way around. IMO it takes 3 people and lots of hands to do it. we almost didnt get it with 3 of us. One had to be inside the gas tank area to install it.

The original rubber was a natural rubber so more pliable, also was made to fit in a steel heat pressed dies.

    Hey Mike, great info,
I’m getting ready to do my ghia glass,
Can you share who you buy your rubber and chrome from?
There seems to be a lot out there, not sure who to buy from😎

If you use the brand new trim it'll be easier.

I wonder if since the windshield glass had previously been replaced could it be that the thin chrome also wasn’t original to the car?

Great call on keeping the OEM stuff; doesn’t make any sense to replace for inferior quality stuff. Where did Chris go?

@@MikefngarageHe was of such great help to you on your earlier projects, I remember. Surprised you had to use repop trim in the end. I would’ve never thought it’d be thinner metal. Car is looking AMAZING!

Anybody ever have trouble sourcing a “front mount” for a 1960 only car? Just ran into this issue

    • @Mikefngarage

I changed my mount in the 60 and welded in the new bracket. I think that is all there is available.

The rubber is the issue. Not like the original rubber.
