☢WARNING! This video is NOT for the technically faint of heart! It's super technical!!☢
You can buy my SNES modules, here:

You guys are ALWAYS asking me about programmers. Here's the unit that I use primarily for EVERYTHING. From old, UVPROMs all the way to "fixing" PS3's by reading their NAND/NOR memories.. I have a special kit put together that's incredibly affordable! Of course, it supports all of my cartridge mods! You'll be hard-pressed to beat this for the price. Check it out:
I use the INL Retro Dumper to dump all my games:
♰ I don't condone piracy! As you'll see, I am dumping the games that I legally own! ♰
Okay, let's get started...
In this installment, I showcase two products that I've designed that ease the process of creating SNES "repro" carts that rely on original hardware. My methods greatly differ from what's commonly done in practice. No cartridge rewiring, no desoldering MASKROMs, and the modifications are 100% reversible and do NOT destroy an original game. - Hry
He narrates the process like Bob Ross. I keep expecting him to say “happy little solder glob” or something. XD
I mean if Bob Ross mad a dick joke every couple of minutes...
@@toadcoder691It's like Bob Ross and Deadpool had a baby...a baby who makes a lot of soldering porn.
"Happy little solder glob" sounds like Louis Rossmann :D
@@CuxxFPV you stole my comment
You beat me to it. The Bob Ross of Soldering. Best soldering video I have seen thus far. Love your voice and plugs thanks for sharing.
Voultar, thank you SO much for this wealth of information. I recently imported a heap of my favorite games from japan planning to translate them to english (even bought multiples of some games because they were so cheap as display pieces).
This by FAR is the most valuable resource to doing this. After decontaminating myself of the cesspit of certain forums it was a great relief to watch your video and hear your ASMR worthy voice to see such a clean solution.
You are a great teacher.
Lol, same here! Games in Japan are so cheap it's unbelievable.
Voultar, it's hilarious listening to your word choices: "just got to clean the tip", "sweet special sauce", "let me load my tip", "it's important I give you the best angles & positions", "now I'm going to wet my tip & just drag it along slowly"....🤣. In all seriousness I am a former Network Engineer, but I know nothing about electronics, soldering etc. I wish I did. I'd love to be able too do the things you do with PCBs & chips! But I absolutely love & thoroughly enjoy your videos! You, Sir are like Mozart with a soldering iron! Thank you very much for taking the time to create these videos in such detail & going in depth with the explanations as you go along!
Appreciate all your hard work on keeping these games ticking. It's so nice to see folks coming up with non-destructive solutions. I'll give this a go with my Chrono Trigger SFC cart.
I really appreciate the fine work you're doing for repros. Keep up the great designs.
Isn't the point of this that it's original hardware rather than a repro?
I really like the idea of keeping the modification as less invasive as possible and you could not have achieved it any better. You are doing awesome work! Thank you for sharing it with us!
I want you to know that as good as this video was overall, it was specifically the out-of-left-field toilet-humor that compelled me to subscribe. Hearing you explain things in a relaxed, yet earnest voice and then bust out "It's gonna take a nice, hot dump..." made me instantly lose it.
The soldering parts are so incredibly soothing. The way you talk over them and describe the techniques you apply and not to worry about bridges... it's like I'm watching Bob Ross and I love it.
Love the videos! Best part of the video is the "UNMOLESTED DUMP" 🤯
Lmfao 25:55 "It's as if the t1000 had relieved himself upon my soldering iron." What a wonderful selection of words... Dude your such a great teacher and what your doing for Retro and Repro Gaming is just amazing... You need more videos and you definitely earned a new subscriber here... Keep it up man...
It's always enjoyable to watch you solder and blabber. Keep up the awesome work!
This is absolutely fantastic! I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. I am really looking forward to the NES solution as well!
The way you assert your dominance over those cartridges ensured my sub.
OMG been waiting for this video ever since the tease you put out on twitter! Right on man.
This is EXACTLY what I've been needing. Lord Voultar for Prez 2020!!
Man, I admire your enthusiasm for fan translations. I would just buy the cart just so I wouldn't feel guilty to play them on an emulator or flash kart but you go the extra mile!
I just realized why I love this channel so much, but have no intention of ever doing what he shows. Voultar is the Bob Ross of soldering.
Thank you for your support!
Hey I saw someone mention if this can be done with games that have the super fx chjp
Hey this is a very good video and I really appreciate your efforts to bring modding to the people. I respect and thank you for what you do. I’ll be buying these.
Such an awesome music selection and a great video! It might not seem fitting at first, but i would love to see a video of you about something soundtrack-related.
This is a phenomenal video, and you have phenomenal knowledge. Thank you for preserving our hobby, and thank you for posting great content!
I so love your commentary on top of the skillful and educational content. I should have subscribed long ago. :-)
Appreciate the knowledge drop and subtle comedic stabs. Subscribed for more!
So awesome! "Make a Goddamn GUI"! Nice touch.
Honestly the best channel for gaming repair and mods I use methods he uses on his channel for repairs on my channel.
Thanks much for the help. Also just started the same process because English games are so expensive but don't want to support pirates!
Wouldn''t be getting anywhere without awesome people like helping making these tutorials. Really appreciate it.
Man, I love your channel so much! Keep the excellent job!
This is genius. Very informative, well thought out and clear info
I was literally looking for this to make a SMW romhack cart, thank you for the video!!!
I love you Voultar, thanks for this. And I just bought the ROM dumper! I'm more excited than Bob after his first beer in the morning! :)
Excellent use of Rockman & Forte tunes for the BGM in the second segment... One of my favorite SNES OSTs of all tiiimmmeee
You are a hero of time, a hero of legend.
Do I need titanium white to make some puffy little clouds too? You are so Bob Ross in this video it just made me smile all the way through it. lol
Nice tutorial ,keep going!
Every day I learn something new.
Every new video you share it with us it's a new lesson ... at least, for me is ! Thank you everyday !
Very informative and interesting video man, keep up the good work.
Oh, I gotta research and start making these for myself. Thank you so much for sharing true knowledge.
wow amazing job! Keep up the good work Voultar :D
I've recently acquited an original crystal xbox that I want to restore. Figured at least 2 popped caps inside. Got somewhere you would recommend for cap kits?
That is pretty cool. Thanks for showing that!
What you are doing is fascinating and important, but I just can't get over how much I love your voice... >,
Dude your work is spot on. Keep it up! (y)
your soldering narration is amazing, i love it. bob ross of welding :D
This was amazing! You're like the Bob Ross of soldering!
Excellent, very instructive.
Thank you very much for your great work !!
well done man, i had no idea that you could even do this. got myself a new hobby now haha
4:50 "It's gonna take a nice hot dump" 🤔
Ha ha ha
Like a mixture of Deadpool and bob ross....very ASMR and always nice to watch old tech get treated with such respect and care. Another great video!
Awesomesauce !!! Nice 👍 a lot of fun and really enjoyed.
Soldering technique was the best part of this video. Thanks!
Love your tutorials. Youre a great person
You are the Bob Ross of electronics. Please keep making great videos!
HUGE COMPLAINT
.....you need to make more videos.
I have finished all of them and clearly I need more. haha Seriously though...thanks for the great content!
Well done. Thank you for putting up a proper guide on making a repro and not being obtrusive in promoting your new products. Insert ‘hot dump’ below...
Excellent work!
I've seen many of your videos, I can only hope to be able to solder like you someday. I'll keep practicing!
Love the narrative. Very informative. It’s just a shame my soldering skills suck XD
The cleanest job i've ever seen to translate a japanese game.
Bravo 👏👏👏
So there's a chance we can get a proper Phantasia or Star Ocean translated games...
Hell yes I needed this in my life
you sir are a god among men! thank you for this video as someone who is trying to get into electronic work like this.
I have a simple solution for the smd soldering of big chips
a little bit of generic glue like UHU or whaterver you like, just to keep the chip from moving, you can also use a little piece of double side tape
its easier to allign the pins and solder the 4 corners and you are good to go.
the video is perfect in every way :)
How did you determine what data came out of what chip? with if the information on the top chip was now placed in the bottom chip? or dose it not matter that what order the information was placed back on the chips as long as all the information is evenly split between the two chips.
Voultar, this changes everything.
4:49 Youre welcome.
I subbed for this. "Give it a nice tug" was a very close second.
BEAUTIFUL AND THE NARRATION IS TOP NOTCH!!!! LEARNED SOME NEW SKILLS
Excellent work. Icon is also an good rom tool app w/gui. I used to use that in the early 90's to dump/split/join/crack SNES and Gen roms.
At 30:07, I loved when he snapped the battery in perfect horizontal alignment, because I would have done the same, even though I know the cartridge will be sealed afterwards and I won't be able to see it...
Oh yeah, 100% reversible repros.
this is my kinda thing.
dope username
Right because you really want to get Troy Aikmen back!
Hello Mr Voultar. Thank you for the quality videos, your work is really appreciated. How about considering detailing some of your tools, like recommended flux pen, ribbon cable and so on in a future video please? I'd rather trust your experience than risking to order BS items.
Lovely!
Can't thank you enough ♥️
Realy great job Man.
Adding this to my wish list for sure! I got a bunch of SFC carts in Japan a few months ago and this solution is just perfect for me. Can something like this, but for N64, be done?
I feel like I learned something important today.
Shit, didn't expect to see you here.
I like your videos about classic anime
At @31:42 you mention about patching a Final Fantasy VI with a pretty good English translation. Would you mind sharing what specific translation patch it is? All the ones I've found for better English patches are for the US ROMS (Final Fantasy III); been looking for one that can patch with the Japanese original. Thanks again for the video!
Lord Voultar! What majestic work you always do! Like many others I am sure, you have inspired me to take up the cart modding mantle. Your advice on tools has been invaluable and I have competed my first mod, a Gradius 3 SA-1 mod. Went like butter! I now find myself with a small collection of fantastic JRPGs that I would love to translate and use your great boards for, the non destructive method appeals to me no end. But unfortunately I am from the UK, can you give any advice as to alternatives to your super stacker, or better still how I could get your super stacker here in the UK? Love all that you do, keep up the amazing work.
Dude you're like the Bob Ross modding I love it lol. How does this man not have 100k.
The only good video on CZcams.
I'm glad someone like you is around making guides to play English patched games like this unlike everyone on the internet who just says "Use a flashcart" or "Just emulate it"
Fantastic video, you make it look so easy even for us without strapons ;-)
Clean job!
Could it be possible to make something like this for the Super FX chips?
phenomenal, an exquisite solution
What a time to be alive
Very nice! I suck at soldering, though! Yay!
Simply awesome!
Question, do you have the dumper available for download? I have been trying to dump my copy of Dragon Quest 1 but the software for the inl retro programmer is not cutting it for me. Every time I do it's a blank screen
How many years of wizard school did it take to get this good, holy sh*t. This is ACE workmanship!
All I needed was the intro, thanks for the lolz
Voultar, you're my hero.
Your solder lesson has some major Bob Ross Energy going on there. Dat BRE tho.
That chip stacking idea is incredible! I'll definitely keep that in mind for future projects
Piggybacking memory chips is a classic technique. It's usually used to expand memory, but it works to replace it too!
Love the squeek sound of that iron on the pins. Reminds me of squeeky warm cheese curds.... Mmmmmmm lol
Very nice. The only thing which annoyed me was no narration about the extra little chip on the S. Stacker but I am sure the aforementioned documentation at the end will resolve that. I am pleased to see there are alternatives which are being created to the mess of wires which make amateur mods look like Hollywood-inspired time bombs. Hopefully for the NES video you recall your previous content with wiring up an NES ROM and comparing it to the new method for showing how easy it is your NES hardware would be to use for translations and mods.
The only one caveat is no ease of removal, but there's no reason to have a bunch of mods available on chips when those can just be IPS patched and ran in emulators so no big deal there _as long as one's image is their own._
Would you consider doing a Tim Worthington N64RGB install? I just did mine and I'd like to see how my work stacks up. Can't wait for the next video!
You have a Bob Ross voice. I LOVE IT!
Omg thank you for documenting this discovery! Saving us from the worst of the internet.
This got my imagination captive.
So what is the Checksum anyway and why does it need to be fixed? Does this always need to be done for every ROM you write to a chip?
Fascinating as this is 100% a method people will use once the EEPROMs start dying on a large scale for these cartridge based games to restore their original carts to working order. I love your humour and detailed instructions you give in your videos. Keep it up bud, you're clearly a gem for the retro gaming community.
slickrasta What commercial cartridges have the game on EEPROMs?
Oh no I incorrectly named a chip... thanks for being that shitposting dick. You get the point of what I was saying still so idc.
Excellent, I love it, I really like the finished article. Do you find the caps in these games are always good or is it worth replacing them as a precaution? I never hear of it in carts (do they use better quality caps?) but you often hear of recapping consoles. Ta
Pete Grimes i usually test the caps with my multimeter but as a rule anything that old I will replace anyway, but make sure the caps are decent quality
This voultar is the best thing ever happened to our community
Any chance you'll design a memory module to fit the mask ROM on SHVC-1CA6B-01 cartridges? :^)
Daamn this is amazing and a lot easier than replacing maskroms or building a repro from scratch by using one on those new PCBs, but for someone like me who only owns a few SFC games and want them translated is not cost effective :/ the dumper, then the programmer, then soldering the small flashrom chip is much complicated... if only someone would sell the prebuilt PCBs already flashed and soldered so i just have to solder the PCBs to the original maskrom it would be PERFECT.
I agree. This is more geared toward the tinkerer or electronics hobbyist who probably already has most of the required equipment.
