Shinjuku is one of the most famous metropolitan cities in Tokyo. It is also a great place to grab some drinks with friends. However, there are a few areas that can be a little dangerous if you don't know what to look out for. Kabukicho, Shinjuku's Red Light District and home of the Robot Restaurant, is one of those areas. Kabukicho is an area filled with bars, restaurants, host and hostess clubs, as well as love hotels. Kabukicho's name came from the late 40's plan to build kabuki theater in that area, that while was not built, the name stuck. One of the dangerous things about Kabukicho is the "kyaku-hiki" or pulling in of customers by staff of hostess clubs and certain bars. There are a few clubs and bars that will overcharge for drinks, have hidden fees, or worst case scenario slip drugs into your drinks. While this is a rare occurance, it does happen and can cause some real problems for those that cannot speak Japanese. Kabukicho isn't all bad, but if you do end up there just make sure to be careful.

yea, if things goes too well, you are getting drunk with cute girs around you who with irresistible cute smiles ask if they may drink in Shinjuku or any other entertainment districts in Japan, you are certainly trapped in what Japanese refer to as water trade -- mizushoubai 水商売 buying hostesses ridiculously expensive drinks without knowing it until it is way too late.

except that it's nothing like what it's really like, is it?
491202 people (at the time of this comment) have been completely misinformed, and have seen nothing of Kabukicho apart from a gentrified main road. I shouldn't complain too much If this was a more accurate video about the really shady places, real good drinking and amazing people you can meet here, more mainstream riff-raff would be drawn here and the gentrification that's killing Kabukicho would accelerate.

Never bump anyone in Kabukicho or else you're gonna be embroiled in a fight with them. And, you're gonna have to fight your way out of it. Brawler Style is for strong attacks. Rush Style is for fast attacks. And, if you're overwhelmed grab a bicycle and go Thug style. You'll earn a few bucks too and an energy drink. Trust me, I've been there like 6 times. Actually, most westerners not into criminology or "well versed" about the Yakuza don't know how powerful they are inside and outside Japan. People watch movies and think was kind of a problem in the 60's to 80's, but the fact is they are the second most wealthy crime syndicate in the world still, only second at the moment to the Italian Calabrian mafia N'drangheta, with about 120.000-180.000 members (which is far more members than the N'drangheta is said to have), and the two syndicates are very close allies who is said to control about 70-80% of the world's heroin trade, besides a lot of other criminal activities such as control of ports and real estate investments. So these guys are not to be trifled with when in Japan, as they also have extremely strong political connections, and among he police too. It's a strong, many times revered, backbone in Japanese society, hard for westerners to understand.

Because of that you forget you needed to look out for unexpected danger. Just before getting there I came across this video while I was searching where the red light district was in Japan. Thanks for this video and warning about the people trying to get you into their clubs. After walking around for about 30min we walked past a Mexican taco bar place and was approached by a African man from South Africa. With his broken English, he asked us where we were from and what we where trying to do. He asked if we wanted to get drinks and that he knew of a place. I told him that we are good, and that we are just sightseeing and not really into drinking at the moment. Then he asked if I was interested in some goods, (meaning drugs). Told him nope I'm all good with but thanks for the offer. He said well if you are ever needing any to let him know and that he can help. After that he left us and went back to the taco bar place and we went on our way. Really interesting place this is, thabks again for the information on this location.

I stayed at that "Godzilla hotel" Hotel Gracery & having to be bothered by those pimps every time I walked back to my hotel was hugely annoying. They claimed I could get a "teen girl" to "do anything" for 4000 yen, which was so cheap I instantly suspected this was a plan to roofie tourists & rob them. Good to see I was right to avoid them. They follow you for several blocks & won't leave you alone. However, the restaurants around there had amazing noodle bowls & the hotel was amazing. You can eat breakfast next to the giant Godzilla head!

I love travelling but it really sucks how almost anywhere you go there's always awful people trying to do you dirty. It ruins the whole experience and makes you never want to go there again. I'm glad I'm a fairly young strong guy as I wouldn't want to travel to the places I have when I'm older and more vulnerable like the majority of travellers are. It shouldn't be this way and it's sad so I hope everyone does there research before going somewhere new.

I mean unless you come from a small town and has never seen any form of big city/seedier areas, this may be "dangerous" .....but honestly, it's not even close to being dangerous ....it's not like they will drag you into their bar ....if you go there at your discretion, that's your prerogative. I actually kind of enjoyed Kabukicho during my stay in Japan. I had been given a heads up about the type of scene that district had but it was way less sketchy than I thought it'd be. Given, I'm not one for pub drinking (I'd rather enjoy leisure drinking at my hotel room with some good friends and close company anyways), so I never bothered entering the bars but I definitely know what you mean by the English speaking, primarily Nigerian men who try to get you into their establishment. Even then though, after politely declining their invitation, they didn't hesitate to back off and left you be. I would urge people to definitely check out it's gems like the Robot Restaurant, Don Quijote, and some of their great restaurants, just mind your bearings!

The law against yakuza was enforced a few decades back so they wouldn't come at you without any reason. It's not dangerous if you're just a tourist. FYI, I used to work in Yoshiwara too but it wasn't dangerous either. I heard that those kind of places can be safer because the police always keeps an eye on them.
