Did you know during the development, the director of this game has literally the same haircut, fashion choice and mannerism as Donte? Yeah, this is a self-insert game.
Matt McMuscles and Stop Skeletons From Fighting did a really good video breaking down what exactly went wrong with the Devil May Cry reboot. It came out during the era where Capcom was pandering to Western audiences at the expense of their Japanese audience and so their games were in a weird state back then. It doesn't help that Keiji Inafune, one of Capcom's most prestigious alumni, wanted Capcom to cater to Western gamers completely because he felt like Japan's gaming industry was in sharp decline back then. DmC's director, Tameem Antoinades, straight-up admitted in a pre-release interview that he thought Dante's style was dated and only appealed to a Japanese audience, while ironically making a redesign that caters to an American audience, specifically the Hot Topic, edgelord audience and said he didn't give a damn about how Devil May Cry fans felt about the reboot. In summary, it was a reboot made entirely through spite and ego.
I actually think Classic Dante does try to be cool, it just fails every time and we’re sort of in on the joke. Like his dorky ass trying to turn on the jukebox in 3, he’s only doing that to show off, it fails spectacularly, even the demons pause for a bit. Thats endearing, even the Smokin’ Sexy Style beast can botch it.
Yeah, but he actually is at times, like when he threw his sword down a tower, shot it, ran after it while shooting demons, caught it and jumped off, all while Devils Never Cry was playing in the background.
The several names for Donte already had me laughing, but calling the news anchor "Senator Armstrong's twin who loves the media and celebrity bullshit" was the best part of this video.
Many people call Bob Barbas as Bill O Reily, but I've always seen him as Armstrong if he got failed to be a senator and decides to be a news reporter, works with someone who's above him
@@DarlingMissDarlingDoesn't help that Tameem Antoinades said in a pre-release interview that he didn't care about what Devil May Cry fans thought of the reveal trailer.

A black hole is a region in space where the gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. They form when massive stars collapse under their own gravity at the end of their life cycles. Black holes can vary in size and mass, ranging from small, stellar-mass black holes to supermassive black holes found at the centers of galaxies.
I’d also like to mention that another serious breach to Vergil’s character in the hostage situation is the fact he’s not supposed to use guns. He doesn’t like them and thinks they’re “crude” and “unrefined”.
Yet he still uses a gun twice in the main franchise aswell... Other than that ... yeah this reboot is so far removed from the main games that its a sin to call it a DMC game
@blacky8987 Fair but I don't entirely agree. Capcom cutting the games budget but still expecting it to move a ridiculous amount of units just because it was a multi console release is what really killed 4
@@PapaRunebeard What do you mean by Dragon's Dogma? We only have like 2 games at this point. If you're talking about the BS DLC then no, that didn't stop the game from selling 2.5M 2 weeks after release.
@@blacky8987 i don't believe that's the case to be honest dmc 4 had a lot of issues but it still innovated the combat and the story was decent + special edition added Trish and Lady
another thing that bugs me about the reboot, is that Vergil has a KNOWN Distaste for guns, to the point he refuses to use one unless he has every intent to disrespect his foe, (Arkham) In this game, Vergil LITERALLY is the one that gives you all your new guns, and you first see him use a gun before he pulls out yamato.
The thing about Bob Barbis is, he probably had the hardest boss fight in that game if your playing on Hell & Hell, because one slip up and your out, it was probably one of the most satisfying fights to get 100% right on an attempt because even the devil trigger couldn’t cheese it for you.
14:35 id like to imagine that demons disconnected from their "original" world become mortal but daniel and virgin dont become mortal because they are half angel and are connected to regular world
I still don't miss the reboot. It sure did have things i liked but its negatives overwhelmed the positives. At least DMC5 has many references to it for those who liked it. Like Vergil in the end having his own doppelganger and the slow downwards slashes. Dante saying "Not in a million years" in the fight, the syle meter having an announcer, these and many more design choices carried from the reboot.
There's a game by name of Soulstice from 2022 that has taken inspirations from the reboot for gameplay (and DMC5 and Bayonetta as well) and while it does have its rough parts, it's a fun and solid new game in this genre. Got a lot to offer. It does have the color-coded enemies but does it in a better way: You have the ghost on your shoulder cast a forcefield (just done by pressing a shoulder button) that moves alongside with you. Makes all of the seven weapons total viable for any enemy type. There's around 20 different enemy types if i remember correctly and they're generally quite good. Only three that are stinkers, one of which fortunately only shows up thrice throughout its nineteen- chapter campaign. Game says it has about twenty-five chapters, but boss fights are their own individual chapter instead of a full level. Very good for if you want to quickly refight them.
Also, some of Vergil’s mechanics in this game inspired how he’d play in DMC4:SE and DMC5(SE). Such as using his floating swords for teleportation in fights or traversal and his Judgement Cut cancels.
@@ShadowPirateXWhile there is nothing wrong with that as an idea. Vergil’s teleportation in 3 suits him way better, and is more enjoyable in comparison. Also hate his over the top judgement cut crap. It just doesn’t fit Vergil properly. Kinda ruined Vergil in someways since he now flourishes, and slaps Yamato away in the sheath in an over the top and forceful manner. Doesn’t fit his character. Hated that in 4SE as well. Not bad ideas or anything. Just not right for Vergil. Wish it didn’t get taken and transplanted over.
@@ShadowPirateX judgement cut cancel? didn't the dmc 3 you can spam judgement cut three or four times? even the bossfight vergil can do 3-4 judgement cut.
4:54 Actually that is PRECISELY what the developer is trying to say. Like no joke, the director of DmC Devil May Cry actually said classic Dante isn't cool, so making Donte all edgy and such was his attempt at making Dante his definition of "Cool". And that cutscene with the wig really was him shitting on classic Dante
I mean, not quite. He thought the original character was outdated and wasn't as cool as he used to be. Which was still wrong, but maybe a bit more forgivable.
These are the same devs that openly called the original Dante design a "Gay Cowboy". In fact the hatred between devs and fans, the constant back and forth, it REALLY didn't do the game any favors either. Of course then in DMC5, Capcom gives Dante a cowboy hat weapon which felt like a shot across the bow towards the DmC devs about that comment.
@@sleepyyAshh I mean you could be right, they originally wanted to keep this reboot as close as possible to the original series but Capcom "suggested" that they go all out with it.
PFF. Yeah about that. This technically wasn't the first draft. Capcom ceos somewhere along the line made the infamous "final draft" People have found cut audio files of Kat virgin and donte having actual conversations to give you an idea of their characters, which capcom BLANTANTLY removed
They basically took Dante's cockiness and Nero's angst, cranked them both up to obnoxious levels, and shoved them into one character. I don't even want to know how bad a DmC Nero would have been.
The worst part of this game is that it is so fucking good. They actually kept a lot of the system mechanics they changed for Dmc5, like how the combo counter screams at you, and the slomo last hit for the rooms
With the original series still continuing after this reboot, i started to like this game, kind of. Despite the "dirty" re-characterizations and the embarrassing dialogue, the gameplay is still fun. I recommend getting the Spanish dub mod for anyone who has this game on PC. I'm sure you don't want to miss this: "Mi nombre por cierto el Donté" Donté, le exterminador de demonios
I once made a cringe Homestuck story where one of the trolls used the red and blue weapon system and it made the troll become deeply annoyed at the fact that he didn't throw this game away
wdym like FOR DMC5 we want you experience the Glory, its the obligation to finish what you started and you will love it to the end. But thanks for the Video Cyan
If Capcom hadn't marketed this as a reboot that replaced the OG games or heck even as a new IP people would've been a lot more happier, at least DMC 5 happend.
People always complain about the wig scene and act like the developers are saying "our Dante is better", but they never seem to notice the fact that as you play through the game, his hair grows longer and slowly turns white... he's slowly becoming the very thing he said he'd never be
@LeanneKrv it's one of the few things I actually liked about the game and his character. Yeah the game wasn't the dmc we all wanted, but there's definitely places where the game deserves credit
Well, the devs were antagonizing the fanbase at the time by saying OG Dante was a gay cowboy or would be laughed at in a bar and valid criticism towards the reboot getting dismissed as "oh, you don't like the game because he doesn't have white hair". Even if their intention was Dino slowly becoming the very thing he said he'd never be, that fell apart for the public and saw as another attempt as "our Dante is cooler than the old Dante"
@snake3563 yeah that's stuff they said after the game was made, pretty much out of anger, and they weren't completely wrong. A lot of the criticism that they received was literally people just butthurt that Dante was different and the game was darker, when that was the point. They were told to make a DMC game with their spin on it. They obviously didn't make the wig scene with hostility towards the old games, because they were obviously leaning towards Dante slowly growing into OG Dante. But fans don't like change so of course they were hostile, and the developers reacted immaturely. That still doesn't change their original intentions with the game, and if the OG DMC didn't exist, people would love this game
About halfway through the video, and your line-up quotes of all the weapons like the power of Spinjitzu and axing the demons a question was a delight. Got me smiling. I'm glad that gameplay-wise the game was fun for you, and i quite enjoy the video myself. I've left this comment to a few people in the comment section here and there, but to leave it in a more general way: The character action game Soulstice from 2022 is very much worth a look. Has taken some gameplay inspirations it seems from DmC, DMC5 and Bayonetta, tone and writing cues from Darksiders, some other inspirations from manga like Berserk and Claymore, new ideas on the "Devil Trigger" state such as different Alignments which have an effect on the way this Rapture State as it is known functions, and it's not as easy as DmC either. There's some more special things to Soulstice's "Devil Trigger" modes, too. Good story and writing, first or middle third may feel slow, seven total weapons, mix of a Style and Devil Trigger meter, a skill tree for your dead ghost sister's skills that can give full currency refunds, generally solid enemy roster (bar 3 out of the over-twenty-total enemy designs) that can influence each other too with aggression buffs and shields, quite good bosses, controller button remapping, colorblindness options, and I just really like it. It does have a kinda divisive central mechanic with the Banishment and Evocation fields: basically color coding but with casting forcefields around yourself instead (Banishment is Red, Evocation is Blue). Does make all the seven total weapons viable for any enemy, with some having dedicated strengths against specific types such as the whip being low-damage wide rapid stunning hits to unprotected enemies, punch daggers supplying concentrated rapid stunning hits with a good launcher that puts you in the air as well, the warhammer being good to destroy shields, the big fist for armor, and some more. (all weapons also have some subtle differences in behaviour compared to one another). Thing is, there's a kind of timer for how long a Field can be up. You gain more "time" by continuously hitting colored enemies though and later skills make it more managable, but i've seen people say they dropped it because of this mechanic. If you decide to check it out, or some other reader, i wish you a lot of fun on Soulstice!
Great job with the editing. Had a fun time reminiscing the good times dmc brought me. I certainly will replay the Definitive Edition once I finish up my backlog of unfinished titles.
Personally one of the reasons I think this reboot is so hated even now is because of one Tameem Antoniadias (sorry if I spelled that wrong.) For those who don't know this man was one of the leads of the project... And He was EXTREMELY antagonistic towards the fanbase. Like it almost felt like he hated the original series going as far as to say that the original Dante was a gay cowboy and if he walked into a bar he'd get laughed at. He almost acted like the reboot would be the first good game in the series with how his attitude was. which granted it is admirable that he stuck with his guns on this game but seriously this man was just very petty at points. Keep in mind at this point in time ninja theory the studio that worked on this game didn't really much of a pedigree at this point in time.
Tameem never said dante was a gay cowboy, that was just a slide that they showed during a presentation that was shown by the artist of the game. Sure still a lowblow but it was never said by tameem or in words at all.
From what I hear, they also got kind of screwed by Capcom. They had originally planned to do something closer to the original series, then Capcom told them to make it different. I seem to remember hearing that they said something to the effect of "If we wanted the same thing we've been doing, we would just do it ourselves." So I'm not sure how much of the PR mess was just them trying really hard to double down on what Capcom was making them do.
Thank you for that correction. I sometimes accidentally fuse those parts together due to his actions at the time so I apologize for the slight misinformation.
This reboot had its ups and downs, I'll say we all ofc wanted Original dante. (me more than everyone else cause I liked dmc1 dante more than all the rest, and if you think he hasn't changed, know this, the original creator of dmc1 and dante had his project taken away from him after 1 for no reason at all, so it's literally diff writers) But people hate far too much on this to the point of unfair logic. Example? People will literally mock the black hair dante for being emo, bro, he's wearing normal clothes, a wife beater, and has a crew cut, he never cries once. Original Dante, his white long hair and a red trench coat and cries, he's far more emo by a long shot, and that is not an insult. No it's infact a point that I'm trying to make, to give emos the credit where they are do, and to not use delusional, bs logic, if you are gonna critisize something, be fair about it, the dialogue kinda sucked and it's demons were a bit too weird and disgusting, there is some good and fair critisizm.
I've never played the game, but I love the look of the city crumbling and reshaping around you and messing with gravity. I could the idea making for a killer platforming game if it was used again.
it honestly really sucks that they decided to do a reboot because they were not confident enough to make their own characters. if you change the names and VERY little of the story as to not come off as a complete ripoff, this game could easily have been one of many people's favorites. music was kickass, gameplay was good and story was ok but it's not like people play hack and slash for story anyways. overall it was a shame because this could have been so much more, but at least playing the game was fun!
There's people who quite like hack-and-slash games for story and/or characters. Of course, depends on which one. Hi-Fi Rush, the Darksiders games, Soulstice and the Greek GOW games are examples where the story is a pretty big part of the appeal. True though that the gameplay is a *very* important part of this genre, but it can be nice to have story be a more central ingredient instead of a sauce that you can take or leave for the main course, so to speak.

Did you know during the development, the director of this game has literally the same haircut, fashion choice and mannerism as Donte? Yeah, this is a self-insert game.
At least, he's gone from the studio, but when during the development from Hellblade 2.
What we got is the toned down version, the skinny smoking Donte that was in the OG trailer was a complete self insert of Tameem Antoniades lol
Lmao I remember this he got roasted so bad for that and this game wasn’t even successful because of him
Matt McMuscles and Stop Skeletons From Fighting did a really good video breaking down what exactly went wrong with the Devil May Cry reboot.
No
He didn't self insert. He liked Donte's haircut and got the same one for himself

These are the same devs that openly called the original Dante design a "Gay Cowboy". In fact the hatred between devs and fans, the constant back and forth, it REALLY didn't do the game any favors either.

People always complain about the wig scene and act like the developers are saying "our Dante is better", but they never seem to notice the fact that as you play through the game, his hair grows longer and slowly turns white... he's slowly becoming the very thing he said he'd never be
True. It is poetic in a way and he slowly accepted that, which is pretty nice.
And he would still be better than the developers of saints row 2023. Not to mention, that he is done with it and moving on
Maybe the scene of Dante dancing with a cowboy hat on DMC 5 is a reference to that
Thank you for that correction. I sometimes accidentally fuse those parts together due to his actions at the time so I apologize for the slight misinformation.
This reboot had its ups and downs, I'll say we all ofc wanted Original dante.
(me more than everyone else cause I liked dmc1 dante more than all the rest, and if you think he hasn't changed, know this, the original creator of dmc1 and dante had his project taken away from him after 1 for no reason at all, so it's literally diff writers)
But people hate far too much on this to the point of unfair logic.
