  • Join me as I explore, hike, and paint Sedona, Arizona. Despite it being a hot July day, the trip was so stunning and peaceful. My day started with the sunrise and then an early hike on the Mescal Trail. The landscape was so immediately breathtaking that only about a mile and a half along the trail, I stopped to try to capture it in paint. The watercolor & gouache sketch was painted using my travel sketchbook/art journal and a handful of colors. My art supplies, materials, and color palette are listed below. Afterwards, in the afternoon, I took in the town. Ending up at my hotel for a calm evening.
    Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Wow, amazing, relaxing, beautiful scenery. I admire your courage to go out and paint. I think a lot about it when I go places, the first things I say is: I should have brought my paints with me. This is how far I get. It seems intimidating but obviously very rewarding. Congratulations. Last year I bought a set of watercolors and gouache. I have tried the watercolor, I liked it but went back to oils. I’m still thinking trying the gouache. Your work is amazing. 10+ minutes of video but I bet a lot more work into it. Thanks so much for bringing so much inspiration and balance. Awesome work.

Crisalida!!!! It's great to hear from you again. Thank you so much for your kindness. I am so glad you liked the video. Going out into nature and painting is very intimidating, but sooooooooo rewarding. Just go into it with the mindset that what you make will NOT look like what you see... there is just no way to capture everything. So you have to leave with an impression of what you saw and what you experienced. The paintings will always look so much better when viewed away from the reference. Just have fun.
Glad to read you trying different media. That is too cool. I at first did not like gouache. It has a steep learning curve. But now I love it and it is one of my preferred mediums. Give it a chance. Anyway, great to hear from you and thanks again.

    To be honest,
I dont have anything special to say.
Just want to add comments so your YT
    grow and you succeed :)
    2k here we come! hehhe
(Tip - pump up shorts. I believe it will launch you quickly.)
EDIT - Personally, I don't care much for watercolor, gouache, or acrylic,
as I learned and was inclined to see oil as the pinnacle of painting.
Therefore, other mediums lack the "high-end" value of oil.
So... My question is basically, why do you use other color mediums and not exclusively oil?
Furthermore, I guess I just need to be convinced somehow that paintings
created with mediums other than oil are valuable as well,
but I can't find the connection yet.
Sorry for all this mumbling, hehe.
Thanks in advance, and sending love from Israel :)

    • @michaeljohnnolan
      @michaeljohnnolan  Pƙed rokem +3

I always appreciate your comments. And thank you for looking out and helping me. You're reading my mind... I have shorts coming out for the next few weeks while I am working on my next two videos. Pardon the lack of videos, CZcams had been a part-time gig taking a bit of a backseat to my full time teaching job and producing gallery paintings.
And I totally agree with you, oil paint is the pinnacle and it is all I use for works that I sell. Oil paint just infuses such a life into an artwork. It is the only medium I have used that can even remotely capture the realness of reality...turning an image into an object. Watercolor and gouache do have a unique and beautiful look while possessing wonderful textures and dynamics all their own. Mainly, I enjoy their ease of use and ability to travel with them. Thus, I adore them for work in the sketchbook and quicker plein air studies. Acrylic just doesn't know what it wants to be or what it can be. :)
Not at all, I enjoy your mumblings. Keep them coming. Thank you again for your awesome support. I started this channel as an aid to my teaching and classes, but now I am really starting to love producing videos. I am dedicating a lot more time to it now. Thank you again!
