  • I can't believe I caught fish with this!! First time trying...Graeme goes to the dark side he has always feared most...fishing with a pole. He goes to visit Grant for some tips on beginners pole fishing and starts with just a 3 metre pole which he then takes to Watmore to see if he can catch anything. He switches between 2 swims in an effort to find a bite, feeding on the little and often basis and just hoping he can see the tiny pole float. But it all comes good in the end when he catches several different species but gets himself into a right mess when a bigger fish suddenly moves into his swim. Just how far can a piece of elastic stretch? and in case you wonder if he is setting up with pole gear the answer is no, he still prefers a 13-foot match rod and running line with a reel...Then it's into the new "Random" section, where he changes a mantle on his ancient pressure lamp in readiness for another beach session. If you are a beginner wanting to catch fish in the margins, then this pole fishing film could be the one for you.

    My first fishing rod was a bamboo cane from my dad's garden, some twine and a very small safety pin from my mother's sowing box. My bait was a dough from my mother's bread mix. This was 1963. I was 8 years old at the time, and I fished ever since. I haven't fished for the past two years due to disabilitys and I reply, miss those great times. Watching you takes me back. Many thanks for sharing your sessions with us. 👍

    At one time around 1965 and before if you went to a nearby pond or LAKE in the south in Alabama Tenn., Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and other states and you saw cars arriving to the fishing areas, just about all the cars had several brown bamboo poles sticking ou of the cars windows and that's what everyone used for fishing until reels and such got cheaper. As a kid we all learned to fish with poles. It was a lot of fun catching bream and bluegill which could always give you a great fight and tasted great at a fish fry if you were lucky. And never used a net, just swung them in then put them on a stringer and back in the water.

    Nice to introduce the younger ones to fishing by showing how 'to get started. It even teaches some of the more experirienced ones. And pole fishing is just another technique you must 'master' but is fun. The sea shell is a Pacific rock oyster. Exotic to most English beaches but is becoming more common. We used to import the oyster from Japan but they have spread like wildfire and 'replaced' the native oyster. Since the one you had was already dead, it probably washed up with the current ,

    I purchased a 4m whip from a tackle shop in Derby for £11 and a rig for a couple of pound. The other Sunday I was fearing a blank on the float and method feeder and decided to try the whip. In half an hour I had three roach and a couple of 3lb carp which was great fun. I had the hook snapped by a bigger carp which the setup isn’t designed for. My youngest son loves to use it too.

    @totallyawsomefishing another great video , I use a 11 meter whip that’s put over and my rigs for commercial are never much longer then 7 foot deep as my local commercials are about 6 feet deep so I can have more control and the positive from a put over whip over a telewhip if you hit a nice fish like carp , barble, tench you can play the fish better and you can get a good quality put over whip for £100 .

    Hi Graeme, you had fun with that whip & that’s the name of the game. There’s no right way or wrong way. As long as you’re enjoying the fishing then that’s what matters. You can have as much fun with a whip that costs a tenner as a 16 meter pole that costs £2,000. It also shows that you can go right back to basics and still catch fish. Enjoying the totally random videos.

    @peterream9437 Před 9 měsíci +3

    Put the pole tip under the surface when you hook into a decent fish. If it lets go with all the elastic out, that float is coming out of the water like a missile. When its under the surface, it acts like a shock absorber and slows it down a bit . They take some getting used too, but like everything, right tool for the job.
    Margin poles tend to have stronger elastic in them , too deal with bigger fish. They have pullers on them so you tension the elastic, when playing the fish. Get Grant to show you one. Again pole fishing isn't for everyone, but on the right day, it can out fish rod and line.

      I deffo won't be a regular on the long pole scene that's for sure,but I wanted to try something different and the 3 metre whip is about the same margin distance I fish using my match rod. In fact I wonder now why its called a match rod ??...I have absolutely zero interest in fishing matches yet its my go-to rod for light float fishing. I must say it seemed strange not being able to put the pole down in a rest etc. Yes,I know they have rests,but you could never simply put it down and take your hand off or it will fly off in the water. I watched a match angler lose a full pole dragged in by...no,not by a fat Carp of 15lbs but a Crucian carp barely a pound and a half. I had to go round and cast between his pole tip and the float, eventually snag the line and get his pole back for him. So a smallish fish can slide even a luxury pole straight off the rollers. With running line outfits I can either back off the reel drag or put it on backwind so if my hand is off the rod it won't go in. But I did quite enjoy the short session I had using the whip,and have learned some tips already from the comments appearing,especially keeping the tip near the water so any breakage of elastic is cushioned by the water and any float is not coming directly at me. All a bit of fun but I will stick to my running line outfit. I seem to do ok with it.

    A 12/13 foot match rod and reel works just as well as a 3m pole and has the advantage you don't have to shorten the length or if a bigger fish takes then no anxiety. No control over a pole, just hook and hang on with a bigger fish, as Graeme said, you cant hold a fish to stop it going in the weeds. Don't have a problem if all that is in is small silvers, but how many fisheries these days only have small silvers. I talk to quite a lot of younger fisherman and all they have ever done is fish with a pole on still waters, crazy. BTW I have got a 4m and a 11m pole. I do use the 4m on a very small pond as its only got small fish in it. The 11m, got rollers for it, tried it and its too much hassle shipping and unshipping for small fish

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 9 měsíci

      That's pretty much what I found and although entertaining I still like the reel's drag and ability to shorten the line fast to turn a bigger fish away from a snag.Fine on smaller fish,then boom...along comes Mr fat greedy Carp....

    A friend gave me a whip maybe 5ft to take my son fishing i couldnt believe it he actually caught fish completely on his own waiting for float to go under....he's not even 3 yet! Obviously his patience ran out fast and wanted to watch paw patrol so i took over and to be honest had way more fun catching a few decent roach on the whip instead of messing around with reel but the main thing is its brilliant for him so i can take him with me when ive needed to go fishing and he'll survive a couple few hours throwing maggots in and catching his own fish instead of me "helping"

      Thanks for the tip. I have used plenty of dead maggots,but see your point in hot weather, live mags will be wriggling like crazy and could bury in the silt on the lake bed. At Watmore I think they get nailed by the Roach and Perch long before they even reach the bottom....

    you would be better fishing with a 10m margin pole, that has a side puller so you can pull the elastic in and power it up. ( you have way to much line between the whip tip and the float )

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 9 měsíci

      That's what I was told,to cut it back to a shorter link of line,or indeed get a pole with a side puller so the angler can strip some of the excess elastic in in order to put more pressure on the fish...I'm learning all the time. All totally alien to me,except those end rigs on the winders which I do like very much.

    • @Deadhorseflogger
      @Deadhorseflogger Před 9 měsíci +3

      Errr no. The point of whip fishing (not pole) is that it’s a swing to hand method, hence the total line length should be about the same as the whip length.

    • @glitchyhitchy1811
      @glitchyhitchy1811 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Ahh not quite, this is an elasticated "whip" its made to swing to hand ots how its designed.. what you see with a shorter lash is for poles as they break apart.. so glad he didn't shorten the line, would of made it virtually un fishable or atleast very uncomfortable with roach swinging 5ft above your head😅
