Jazzmaster Jamboree | Budget Jazzmaster Offset Roundup

- In this 141st installment, Jimmy brings out a few of his “budget” Jazzmaster style guitars to compare with what’s available in the budget offset market for those who wish to have a Jazzmaster style guitar in their collection, but don’t want to mortgage the house to get one!
These 3 models are certainly not all that is available, but they are some of the more popular options! - Zábava
Really good tone demos. It’s crazy how good budget guitars sound. Great time to be a player
Hi Jason…thanks so much for stopping into the channel and watching/commenting! Couldn’t agree more! Truly appreciate it!! 🎸👍
Once again, another great comparison video Jimmy!! You can't go wrong with any of these and I agree the Monoprice sounds great! They all sound so good!! Can't wait for the next video!!!
Your too kind Reggie…truly appreciate your stopping in. Your right…you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Just depending on what you are looking for, and how important the true “JM” sound is to you and what you are using it for. As always, thanks my friend…👍🎸
Great to see a little Monday evening Jazzercise! All 3 are their own thing and are really good value. Always a pleasure hearing you play!
Thanks so much Cal B…yes, they are all 3 a bit different for sure. Always a pleasure to have you stop in to the channel! I thank you!! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 Will you be reviewing this takamine np18c? I hope you reply and say yes. images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--4IIZxjC3--/a_0/f_auto,t_supersize/v1656550763/fczwzllwi57jiocyc9jp.jpg
Another great shootout! Keep ‘em comin’!”
Thanks so much….always appreciate your stopping in mjvicc1952! 👍🎸
Great video Jimmy!
Love playing my Squier CV bass VI. Playing it as a bass and guitar. Best of both worlds.
Bob
Thanks so much Bob! Appreciate your stopping in! I do the same with my Paranormal Cabronita Tele baritone!!👍🎸
good stuff, Jimmy...Thanks
Thanks so much Bob…greatly appreciated! 👍🎸
Thanks Jimmy love your videos. Your video on IYV Mustang hybrid which bought and love too death..Since Fender is being a big D with IVY.. I want that second one as a Jaguar.. I now in love with that whammy bar setup. It’s so easy to do surfy guitar and shoe gazing music like My Bloody Valentines. love your in-depth guitar reviews
Thanks so much Bolvine! So glad you enjoy the videos. The IYV Mustang “Hybrid” is still on of my favorite IYV guitars! Really appreciate your stopping in to the channel and hope to see you around! Keep pickin’ 👍🎸
I agree Jimmy. The Monoprice sounds the best. There is something about P90's that always grabs my attention. You really can't go wrong with any of the 3 though. They all have their place and won't break the bank. Thank you for the shootout and have a great week!
Thanks so much Tim…glad you enjoyed and appreciate your thoughts! 👍🎸
Yippee! I will watch it now. Thanks ever so much, Jimmy.
OK I watched it. What are your thoughts about the clean sounds of the FFJA vs the Squier CV JM The P-90s in the OS 40 sound like I expected them to sound but I was wondering what were your thoughts about how closely the FFJA sounds to the CV JM with the acknowledged JM pickups. As for another offset to test I'd suggest the JA-60 from Harley Benton which is supposed to have JM pickups with alnico magnets. The U.S. price today is about $135 to $144 but shipping will cost $70 to $80 more depending upon the Euro-dollar conversion.
👍👍
I think all 3 sound different. I don’t think the FFJA sounds anything like the Classic Vibe! The pickups are much darker sounding…they don’t have the bright cleans of the CV. I of course didn’t change anything while doing this demo…all patches (clean and dirty) were identical for all 3. You can of course dial in whatever type of EQ you want for each guitar, but they all have a different timbre to them with each having different characteristics. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Louis…much appreciated! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 Thank you. Truthfully I"m going to pass on the FFJA then. I'm thinking about getting that Harley Benton JA-60 I told you about. Bright, jangly, bouncing cleans is where I want to be.
@@louisfryzel4618
I think if that’s what you are going for, then yes..I would also pass on the FFJA, at least with the stock pickups. I don’t know enough about the HB, but it sounds like more of what you are going for. Good luck with whatever you decide Louis, and be sure to stop by and let us know what you think of the HB should you decide to grab one! 👍🎸
Nice ! Loved these since i was 4 in '61, The Colorful Ventures. I was 4.
Garage bands were cool and some 'big kids' had Jags or Jazz's.
My first electric, Audition with gold foils. '73.
Later in '08, my Wife buys a nice sb/ts Sq Jagmaster.
Before a move, this was the "Blue Line" axe.
I loved Robben Ford 's playing. This worked.
Gotta work this up again.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Glen…glad you enjoyed it and thanks again for stopping in! 👍🎸
Jimmy,
Another Excellent Roundup. Great Comparisons, tones and vibe.
Great to see the differences, and some similarities.
Definitely looking forward to your thoughts on your others as well.
Thoughts on an OS-20 with coil split on bridge?
Tagima PW 61 is wonderful....
Thanks Jimmy!
Thanks so much R.E….glad you enjoyed it! Will be doing a little round up with the others soon! Not a fan of coil splitting unless that particular pickup was designed/intended for it to begin with. Always appreciate your stopping in…🎸👍
Great video. I would have liked to hear a side by side comparison, but it's your video.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Tracy!! I kind of thought playing each one after the other was enough of a “side by side” to pick out the difference between them, but I get what your saying! Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and sharing your thoughts! 👍🎸
My thoughts:
1) Regarding the stiff vibrato on the OS40: Assuming that vibrato unit is a faithful copy of the Fender design, then I believe the spring should be adjustable by turning that screw found directly to the left of the arm mount.
2) It looks like neither the OS40 nor the Squier CV have the Trem-Lock feature-is that correct? That’s kind of a shame, cause it is a REALLY handy feature! When engaged, it effectively decks the vibrato, so that if a string breaks, you can still play in tune with proper tension on the remaining strings. It’s also VERY useful when changing strings, as it enables you to tune all the strings to pitch far more easily. This feature is found on original Fender JMs, but AFAIK, most of the more recent Fenders, Squiers, and clones do not have it-I’m not sure why this is.
4) The CNZ Audio models REALLY do look similar to Monoprice-so much so that they even seem to have the same “hook” or “beak” in their headstock design! I therefore wonder if maybe they come from the same factory-this could be a GOOD thing, I think! I’ve been very tempted to look into CNZ, too. So far, the only channel I’ve seen do any kind of review of the CNZ models on CZcams is Flowforth Instruments.
5) Looking forward to seeing your video on the OS20, SL56, and Jaguar-the wonderful world of JM misfits!!!!!!! Misfits like Rudolph and the elf! 😁😁😁
I am indeed a moron sometimes…never even looked to see if it was adjustable on the OS40….🤣, but your correct in that there is NO trem lock on either.
Have not looked closely into the CNZ guitars, but from what I have looked at, their offsets certainly look A LOT like the Monoprice models. Plus they have lefties for our Southpaw friends…😎. I may have to “bite the bullet” and look into them myself…we shall see! Always appreciate your stopping in PG…👍🎸
only a day late & a dollar short.
I'd love to see a round up of the Jazzmaster (body) style ones that were not in this video.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting ekw555..the video you speak of is coming to your favorite CZcams channel soon…🤣
Seriously though..thanks so much as always for stopping in, and the request is coming….👍🎸
Well I have to say that I like the video’s and I enjoy hearing you play. I have made my decision to buy the IYV mustang because of your review and I have bought the FFJA because of your review and it went on sale for $120.00 on Amazon and I just received it and I am going to unbox it tomorrow, but I have taken a peek at it to see if all is well. I have a question about the rhythm circuit and thinking about using a dual pot along with the switch and.22 cap , what are your thoughts about this mod?
Thanks for the kind comments Michael, and glad you enjoy the channel!
Not having done those particular mods, I an not quite sure how much benefit vs cost/time will end up being for you. I would keep the guitar stock for the time being, and get to know it better before deciding to mod it…you just may be pleasantly surprised! Once you have had it awhile, then you can get a better feel as to what you may/may not want to mod or upgrade. Just my opinion…the guitar is routed in the upper bout to help in the install of the rhythm circuit, but you will also need pickguard routing, new 1meg pots, wiring, etc…
I would keep it stock…at least for awhile until you actually know what you want to do! Good luck, and thanks again for stopping in to the channel and sharing your thoughts! 🎸👍
@@JimmyStewart1 thanks for your response and thoughts and I will take your advice.

👍👍
Always time later to make mods should you decide you need/want to…in the interim, play and enjoy your new guitar! 🎸👍
All different sound but all great I like that monoprice
Thanks so much Tom..appreciate your stopping in and sharing your thoughts here! Much appreciated 👍🎸
Did you try spraying the Firefly 3 way selector with electrical contact cleaner? It should make it a little quieter.
Thanks so much for stopping in David…I put some foam in the cavity which helped a bit, and I will also give it a spay too. Thinking I will probably just have to replace it eventually as it’s the loudest switch I ever encountered! 😎
Really appreciate your watching and sharing your thoughts! 👍🎸
great "jazzy revisit" brother!
to me the firefly model had the best overall tone...thats what my ears told my brain haha!!
hey isnt it time for another album?? your 1982 album sounds great...im sure you picked up heaps more chops since then yay yaa!!
Thanks for stopping in Mike…I have done a number of albums since “Cordially” and a couple are on my Bandcamp page as well. Did a ton of session stuff too for other artists as well…
@@JimmyStewart1 wowwzerrzzz nice!
is there a link to it? id love to hear/see that!
i havent forgotten that i need to do a vid on that 40watt monoprice amp plus the new pickups in my offset tele....

From there you can also see the “So Blue” and “Murmur” albums as well…👍
Great vid as always Jimmy, have you tried the GFS Xaviere XV-JT100 offset yet, i bought one of their bodies and can't decide between their classic JM wound pickups or the hotter over wounds for my build.
Hi John…thanks so much for stopping in. I have not tried any of the Xavier’s. I do have a Slick SL56 offset though, and it’s very nice. Not sure what type of playing you do, so can’t really advise on what type of pups you are looking for. The Classic JM should be “sparkly”, clean with a bit more top end clarity. Overwounds will probably be a bit darker, similar to a P90 I would think…again, hard to tell on speculation! Truly appreciate your watching and commenting. Good luck with your build in whatever you decide! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 I'd love to hear what you think of the Xaviere Pro JT100. It's close to a real JM, less the special controls (which I'm happy without). Love it's body and neck, but eventually think the original saddles need upgrading to one of the typical upgrade choices. Its JM pickups are decent and representative. I shimmed the neck, brought the floating bridge up, and put classic 12 gauge strings on it to play surf, etc. In that high-tension string setup, it's terrific for that treble/reverb music.
@@frankfarklesberry
I have not tried any of the Xaviere guitars yet Stan. I will have to do a little research on this model. Appreciate the heads up, and thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. 👍🎸
Gilmour much? Another great video!
Ha!! Thanks….😎
You know, I think I like having you here on the channel Charles!!
You only have about 140 videos or so to catch up!! 🤣🤣
Once again…much appreciated! 🙏👍🙏
You should check out the IYV IJG-200 too. It’s got the Jazzmaster rhythm circuit with chambering like a Tele Thinline, traditional floating trem, and 2 Destiny P-90s. I bought one a few months ago and I can’t seem put it down. Typical IYV quality workmanship and setup. I think you’d dig it.
Yes, I have seen their version…pretty nice! My only thing was they did it as a semi-hollow but…yes perhaps some day I may get my hands on one. I have a number of the IYV’s and have been very happy with them!
Thanks so much for stopping in and sharing your thoughts! Much appreciated! 👍🎸
@@JimmyStewart1 I’ve watched your videos on IYV and they played a significant role in my own decision to buy a few of these guitars - there are 4 in house at this point. I just wanted to point out that the IJG 200 has a very shallow chamber in the lower bout (more cosmetic than tone-altering) and is still a pretty heavy instrument. It’s not semi-hollow in the true sense and responds more like a solid body than you might think from the available photos.
@@rascum211
Appreciate it!! Thanks for the info and your thoughts on the IYV. I may have to take a closer look at it…😎
I would really like to hear how the Firefly sounds with 500K or 1M pots. It could add more clarity and brightness. It does sound good as-is though.
I know a couple people who changed out the pots to 1M…it did brighten up a bit, but it was not a big difference to my ears. Not enough to bother changing them out in my opinion.
Appreciate your stopping in to the channel Don…thanks! 🎸👍
Wow, optical illusion, the headstock on the OS40 looks huge. 2:00 I got excited, I'm getting mine tomorrow.
Then at 15:40 😰
Ha…standard size Monoprice headstock…good luck with yours!! 🎸👍
@@JimmyStewart1 Well, Monoprice was a big let down. I was really looking forward to the OS40, all confirmed on my receipt. Just got it today and the guitar they sent me was the less expensive OS30 in white. What a bummer. Especially since they don't have any more OS40's for an exchange, and I already have an OS30. And the wife said happy birthday when it got here.
@@ibberman
Oh man!!! So sorry to hear that….☹️
Indio for the WIN!
In this case, yes! Thanks for stopping in! 👍🎸
The Indio looks better in the vid than on the website.
Yes it does..
I wish my new Firefly FFTL had frets as good as your FFJA appears to be! I have two high frets on my FFTL that BADLY need to be leveled, crowned, and polished. I’m still not sure whether it would be best to buy a Stewmac Fret Kisser, a crowning file, and other tools and try to do the job myself, or buy a new neck with pre-leveled frets, or whether to take it to a luthier. I REALLY don’t want to pay more than the cost of the entire guitar just to make it fully playable.
Try tapping down the high frets with a fret soft hammer. I made a fret kisser from a piece of scrap wood and glued sandpaper on it.
Thanks as always for stopping in PG…have you tried tapping the frets down? Sometimes that’s all it takes….
@@davidkastin4240
Exactly! Thanks for sharing! 👍🎸
Took it to a luthier to get an estimate, and he already tried tapping them down with a fret hammer... It seems it’s going to take a bit more than that, unfortunately. He’s still hopeful that he can level them though. I’m keeping my fingers crossed now that it won’t cost more than the entire guitar did. 😢😢😢
@@zuperdee
Gotcha…too bad, but at least you got it under control
The Monoprice sounds way better than the rest.

I am gonna do an 18 tele shootout!
🤣
Need to break them down in groups…I did solids then thin lines, but had added more since
EVERYBODY re-labels.
I see it happening a lot more these days….
